Behold, a man of God came from Judah by the word of the LORD to Bethel, and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to offer incense.

He cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD and said, 'Altar, altar! This is what the LORD says: Behold, a son will be born to the house of David; his name will be Josiah. He will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who offer incense on you, and human bones will be burned on you.'

Samme dag ga han et tegn og sa: 'Dette er tegnet som Herren har talt om: Se, alteret skal revne, og asken som er på det, skal bli spredt ut.'

On that same day, he gave a sign, saying, 'This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: Behold, the altar will be torn apart, and the ashes on it will be poured out.'

Da kong Jeroboam hørte ordene som Guds mannen ropte mot alteret i Betel, rakte han ut hånden fra alteret og sa: 'Grip ham!' Men hånden han rakte ut mot ham, visnet, og han kunne ikke trekke den tilbake.

When King Jeroboam heard the message from the man of God who cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, 'Seize him!' But his hand, which he had stretched out against the man, withered so that he could not pull it back to himself.

Alteret revnet, og asken ble spredt fra alteret i samsvar med tegnet som Guds mannen hadde gitt ved Herrens ord.

The altar was also torn apart, and the ashes on it were poured out, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.

Kongen svarte og sa til Guds mannen: 'Be til Herren din Gud for meg og be om at hånden min blir hel igjen.' Så ba Guds mannen til Herren, og kongens hånd ble hel og ble som før.

Then the king answered and said to the man of God, 'Entreat now the favor of the LORD your God and pray for me, so that my hand may be restored to me.' So the man of God entreated the LORD, and the king's hand was restored to him and became as it was before.

Da sa kongen til Guds mannen: 'Kom hjem med meg og få deg et måltid, så vil jeg gi deg en gave.'

The king said to the man of God, 'Come home with me and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.'

Men Guds mannen sa til kongen: 'Om du så gir meg halvparten av ditt hus, vil jeg ikke dra med deg, og jeg vil verken spise brød eller drikke vann på dette stedet.

But the man of God replied to the king, 'Even if you were to give me half your house, I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.'

For slik har Herren befalt meg gjennom sitt ord og sagt: Du skal verken spise brød eller drikke vann, og du skal ikke vende tilbake samme vei som du kom.'

'For this is the command the LORD gave me by His word: You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.'

Så gikk han en annen vei og vendte ikke tilbake den veien han hadde kommet til Betel.

So he went another way and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.

Nå bodde det en gammel profet i Betel, og hans sønner kom og fortalte ham alt det Guds mannen hadde gjort i Betel den dagen, og alle ordene han hadde sagt til kongen, fortalte de sin far.

Now there was an old prophet living in Bethel, and his sons came and told him all the deeds the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told their father the words he had spoken to the king.

Da sa deres far til dem: 'Hvilken vei gikk han?' Hans sønner hadde sett hvilken vei Guds mannen, som var kommet fra Juda, gikk.

Their father asked them, 'Which way did he go?' His sons showed him the road the man of God from Judah had taken.

Then he said to his sons, 'Saddle the donkey for me.' So they saddled the donkey for him, and he mounted it.

Han dro etter Guds mannen og fant ham sittende under en eik. Han sa til ham: 'Er du Guds mannen som kom fra Juda?' Han svarte: 'Ja, det er jeg.'

He went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak tree. He asked him, 'Are you the man of God who came from Judah?' He replied, 'I am.'

Da sa han til ham: 'Kom med meg hjem og spis brød.'

Then the prophet said to him, 'Come home with me and eat some food.'

Men han sa: 'Jeg kan verken vende tilbake med deg eller gå med deg. Jeg kan heller ikke spise brød eller drikke vann med deg på dette stedet.

But the man of God replied, 'I cannot go back with you, nor can I eat bread or drink water with you in this place.'

For det er sagt meg ved Herrens ord: Du skal verken spise brød eller drikke vann der, og du skal ikke vende tilbake samme vei som du kom.'

'For I was commanded by the word of the LORD: You must not eat bread or drink water there, nor return by the way you went.'

Han svarte: 'Jeg er også en profet lik deg, og en engel har talt til meg ved Herrens ord og sagt: Få ham med deg tilbake til huset ditt, så han kan spise brød og drikke vann.' Men han løy for ham.

The old prophet answered, 'I too am a prophet, like you. An angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, "Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water."' But he was lying to him.

Så vendte han tilbake med ham og spiste brød i huset hans og drakk vann.

So the man of God returned with him, ate bread in his house, and drank water.

Mens de satt til bords, kom Herrens ord til profeten som hadde ført ham tilbake.

While they were sitting at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back,

Han ropte til Guds mannen som var kommet fra Juda: 'Så sier Herren: Fordi du var ulydig mot Herrens ord og ikke holdt budet som Herren din Gud ga deg,

and he cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, 'This is what the LORD says: Because you have defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you,

men vendte tilbake, spiste brød og drakk vann på det stedet hvor han hadde sagt til deg: Du må verken spise brød eller drikke vann, skal liket ditt ikke bli lagt i graven til dine fedre.'

'but you went back and ate bread and drank water in the place where He told you not to eat or drink, your body will not be buried in the tomb of your ancestors.'

Da han hadde spist brødet og drukket, salte profeten som hadde ført ham tilbake, eslet for ham.

After the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled the donkey for him.

Da han dro av sted, møtte en løve ham på veien og drepte ham. Og liket hans lå kastet på veien, mens eslet sto der ved siden av, og løven sto også ved liket.

As he was traveling, a lion met him on the road and killed him. His body was thrown on the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it.

Some people who passed by saw the body lying on the road, with the lion standing beside it, and they went and reported it in the city where the old prophet lived.

When the prophet who had brought him back from the road heard about it, he said, 'It is the man of God who defied the command of the LORD. Therefore, the LORD has given him over to the lion, which has mauled and killed him, just as the word of the LORD had spoken to him.'

Then he said to his sons, 'Saddle the donkey for me.' So they saddled the donkey.

Han dro av sted og fant liket ligge kastet på veien, og eslet og løven sto ved siden av liket. Løven hadde verken spist liket eller revet i stykker eselet.

He went and found the man's body lying in the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had not eaten the body nor attacked the donkey.

Da løftet profeten liket av Guds mannen opp, la det på eselet og førte det tilbake. Så kom han til byen til den gamle profeten for å holde sørgehøytid og gravlegge ham.

So the prophet picked up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey, and he brought it back to his own city to mourn for him and bury him.

Han la liket i sin egen grav, og de holdt sørgehøytid over ham og sa: 'Å, min bror!'

He laid the body in his own tomb, and they mourned over him, saying, 'Alas, my brother!'

After burying him, the prophet said to his sons, 'When I die, bury me in the same tomb where the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones.'

For det ordet som han ropte ved Herrens ord mot alteret i Betel og mot alle haugene i Samarias byer, skal helt sikkert bli oppfylt.'

For the message he declared by the word of the LORD against the altar at Bethel and against all the shrines of the high places in the towns of Samaria will surely be fulfilled.

Etter dette vendte ikke Jeroboam om fra sin onde vei, men han utpekte stadig prester for haugene blant folket som han ønsket. Om noen ønsket det, fylte han hans hånd, og han ble prest på haugen.

Even after this, Jeroboam did not turn away from his evil way. Instead, he made priests for the high places from all sorts of people. Anyone who wanted to become a priest, he consecrated, and they became priests for the high places.
