Etter mange dager kom Herrens ord til Elia i det tredje året. Han sa: 'Gå og vis deg for Akab, for jeg vil sende regn over jorden.'

After many days, the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, "Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land."

Så gikk Elia for å vise seg for Akab. Hungersnøden var hard i Samaria.

So Elijah went to appear before Ahab. The famine in Samaria was severe.

Akab kalte til seg Obadja, som var over slottet. Obadja fryktet Herren meget.

Ahab summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Now Obadiah revered the LORD greatly.)

Da Jesabel utryddet Herrens profeter, tok Obadja hundre profeter og gjemte dem, femti i hver hule, og forsynte dem med brød og vann.

When Jezebel was killing the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets, hidden them in two caves in groups of fifty, and provided them with bread and water.

Akab sa til Obadja: 'Gå gjennom landet til alle vannkilder og bekker. Kanskje vi kan finne gress, så vi kan holde hestene og muldyrene i live og ikke miste alt buskapen.'

Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs and brooks. Perhaps we can find grass to keep the horses and mules alive and avoid losing the animals."

Så delte de landet mellom seg for å lete. Akab gikk en vei for seg selv, og Obadja gikk en annen vei.

So they divided the land between them to search it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself.

Mens Obadja var på vei, se, da møtte han Elia. Da han kjente ham igjen, kastet han seg ned på ansiktet og sa: 'Er det virkelig du, min herre Elia?'

While Obadiah was walking along the road, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed to the ground, and said, "Is it really you, my lord Elijah?"

Elijah replied, "It is I. Go and tell your master, 'Elijah is here.'"

But Obadiah said, "What have I done wrong that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be killed?"

"As surely as the LORD your God lives," he continued, "there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever they said, 'He is not here,' he made the kingdom or nation swear that they could not find you.

Now you tell me, 'Go and say to your master, Elijah is here!'

Men det kan hende at Herrens Ånd vil føre deg bort til et sted jeg ikke vet, når jeg går og forteller Akab det. Da finner han deg ikke, og han slår meg i hjel. Og jeg, din tjener, har fryktet Herren fra ungdommen av.

But I, your servant, fear that if I leave, the Spirit of the LORD will carry you off to some place I don't know, and when I go to tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me. Yet I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.

Har det ikke blitt fortalt min herre hva jeg gjorde da Jesabel drepte Herrens profeter? Jeg tok hundre av Herrens profeter, gjemte dem femti i hver hule og ga dem brød og vann.

Has it not been reported to my lord what I did when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the LORD? I hid a hundred of the LORD's prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with bread and water.

And now you say, 'Go and tell your master, Elijah is here,' and he will kill me!

Da sa Elia: 'Så sant Herren, hærskarenes Gud, lever, som jeg står for, i dag vil jeg vise meg for ham.'

But Elijah said, "As surely as the LORD of Hosts lives, whom I serve, I will show myself to him today."

Så gikk Obadja for å møte Akab og fortalte ham det. Og Akab dro for å møte Elia.

So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

Da Akab så Elia, sa han til ham: 'Er du her, du som fører ødeleggelse over Israel?'

When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?"

Elia svarte: 'Jeg har ikke ført ødeleggelse over Israel, men det har du og din fars hus, fordi dere har forlatt Herrens bud og fulgt Baalene.

Elijah replied, "I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house have, by abandoning the commandments of the LORD and following the Baals.

Send nå bud og samle hele Israel til meg på Karmelfjellet, sammen med de fire hundre og femti Baals-profetene og de fire hundre Asjera-profetene, som spiser ved Jesabels bord.'

Now summon all Israel to meet me at Mount Carmel, along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel's table.

Akab sendte bud til alle Israels barn og samlet profetene på Karmelfjellet.

So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.

Elia trådte fram for hele folket og sa: 'Hvor lenge vil dere halte til begge sider? Hvis Herren er Gud, så følg ham. Men hvis Baal er Gud, så følg ham!' Men folket svarte ham ikke et ord.

Elijah approached all the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal is God, follow him." But the people said nothing.

Da sa Elia til folket: 'Jeg er alene igjen som Herrens profet, mens Baals profeter er fire hundre og femti mann.

Then Elijah said to the people, "I alone am left as a prophet of the LORD, but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, 'Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not set fire to the wood.'

So they took the bull that was given to them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, shouting, 'O Baal, answer us!' But there was no response, no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

At noon, Elijah began to mock them, saying, 'Shout louder! Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.'

De ropte høyere og skar seg med sverd og spyd etter deres skikk, til blodet rant av dem.

So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.

Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening offering. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

Then Elijah said to all the people, 'Come here to me.' They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD, which had been torn down.

Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, 'Your name shall be Israel.'

With the stones, he built an altar in the name of the LORD and dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs of seed.

Han la veden til rette, skar oksen i stykker og la den på veden.

He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces, and laid it on the wood.

Så sa han: 'Fyll fire krukker med vann og hell det over brennofferet og veden.' Deretter sa han: 'Gjør det en gang til!' og de gjorde det en gang til. Så sa han: 'Gjør det for tredje gang!' og de gjorde det for tredje gang.

Then he said, 'Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and the wood.' 'Do it again,' he said, and they did it again. 'Do it a third time,' he ordered, and they did it the third time.

Vannet rant rundt omkring alteret, og han fylte grøften med vann.

The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

Da tiden for matofferet kom, trådte profeten Elia fram og sa: 'Herre, Abrahams, Isaks og Israels Gud, la det bli kjent i dag at du er Gud i Israel, at jeg er din tjener, og at det er på ditt ord jeg har gjort alle disse ting.

At the time of the evening offering, Elijah the prophet approached and said, "LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that You are God in Israel, that I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your command.

Svar meg, Herre, svar meg, så dette folket kan vite at du, Herre, er Gud, og at du har vendt deres hjerte tilbake.'

Answer me, LORD, answer me, so that this people will know that You, LORD, are God, and that You have turned their hearts back to Yourself.

Da falt Herrens ild og fortærte brennofferet, veden, steinene og jorden og slikket opp vannet som var i grøften.

Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.

Da hele folket så dette, kastet de seg ned på ansiktet og ropte: 'Herren, han er Gud! Herren, han er Gud!'

When all the people saw it, they fell facedown and said, "The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!"

Elia sa til dem: 'Grip Baals profeter! La ingen av dem slippe unna!' De grep dem, og Elia førte dem ned til Kison-bekken og slaktet dem der.

Then Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal. Do not let any of them escape." So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered them there.

Elia sa til Akab: 'Gå opp, spis og drikk, for jeg hører lyden av regnets brus.'

Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.

Så gikk Akab opp for å spise og drikke. Men Elia gikk opp på toppen av Karmel, bøyde seg ned mot jorden og la ansiktet mellom knærne.

So Ahab went up to eat and drink, but Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel, crouched down to the ground, and put his face between his knees.

Han sa til tjeneren sin: 'Gå opp og se mot havet!' Han gikk opp og så, men sa: 'Det er ingenting.' Da sa Elia: 'Gå tilbake syv ganger.'

Then he said to his servant, "Go and look toward the sea." So he went and looked and said, "There is nothing." Seven times Elijah told him, "Go back."

På den syvende gangen sa han: 'Det stiger opp en liten sky fra havet, som en manns hånd.' Da sa Elia: 'Gå opp og si til Akab: Spenn for vognen og dra ned, så ikke regnet stopper deg.'

On the seventh time, the servant reported, "Behold, a small cloud, as small as a man’s hand, is rising from the sea." So Elijah said, "Go and tell Ahab, 'Prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.'"

På et øyeblikk ble himmelen svart av skyer og vind, og det kom et stort regn. Akab steg opp i vognen og dro til Jisre'el.

In a short while, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain began to fall. Ahab mounted his chariot and rode to Jezreel.

Herrens hånd kom over Elia, og han bandt opp kappen om livet og løp foran Akab helt til Jisre'el.

The hand of the LORD came upon Elijah, and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
