Saul var to år i kongedømmet da han begynte å regjere over Israel.

Saul was [about] a year into his reign when he became king, and he ruled over Israel for two years.

Saul valgte seg tre tusen menn fra Israel. To tusen av dem var med Saul i Mikmas og på Betel-fjellet, og tusen var med Jonatan i Gibea i Benjamin. Resten av folket sendte han hver til sitt telt.

Saul chose 3,000 men from Israel for himself. 2,000 were with Saul at Michmash and in the hills of Bethel, and 1,000 were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent back to their homes.

Jonatan slo ned garnisonen til filisterne som var i Geba, og filisterne fikk høre om det. Så blåste Saul i hornet over hele landet og sa: «La hebreerne høre!»

Jonathan attacked the Philistine garrison at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul blew the ram's horn throughout the land, saying, "Let the Hebrews hear!"

Hele Israel hørte at Saul hadde slått filisternes garnison, og at Israel hadde vakt filistrenes vrede. Da ble folket kalt sammen for å følge Saul til Gilgal.

All Israel heard the news: "Saul has attacked the Philistine garrison, and now Israel has become offensive to the Philistines." So the people were summoned to follow Saul at Gilgal.

Filisterne samlet seg til kamp mot Israel med tretti tusen vogner og seks tusen ryttere og en hær som var tallrik som sanden på havets bredde. De dro opp og slo leir i Mikmas, øst for Bet Aven.

The Philistines assembled to fight Israel with 30,000 chariots, 6,000 horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and camped at Michmash, east of Beth Aven.

Da Israels menn så at de var i nød, og at folket ble presset hardt, gjemte de seg i huler, i kratt, i berg, i festninger og i groper.

When the men of Israel saw that they were in a difficult situation and that the enemy was pressing them hard, they hid themselves in caves, thickets, rocks, pits, and cisterns.

Hebreerne krysset Jordan til landet Gad og Gilead. Saul var fremdeles i Gilgal, og hele folket som var med ham, skalv av frykt.

Some Hebrews crossed the Jordan into the land of Gad and Gilead. But Saul remained in Gilgal, and all the people with him trembled in fear.

Han ventet sju dager, så langt som den tid Samuel hadde satt, men da Samuel ikke kom til Gilgal, begynte folket å spre seg fra Saul.

He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people started to scatter from Saul.

Så sa Saul: «Bring hit til meg brennofferet og fredsofferne.» Og han ofret brennofferet.

So Saul said, "Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings." And he offered the burnt offering.

Da han var ferdig med å ofre brennofferet, kom Samuel, og Saul gikk ut for å møte ham og for å hilse ham.

Just as he finished offering the burnt sacrifice, Samuel came. Saul went out to meet him and to greet him.

Samuel sa: «Hva har du gjort?» Saul svarte: «Da jeg så at folket spredte seg bort fra meg, og du ikke kom innen de fastsatte dagene, mens filisterne samlet seg i Mikmas,

Samuel said, "What have you done?" Saul answered, "When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and you did not come within the appointed days, and that the Philistines were assembling at Michmash,

tenkte jeg: Nå vil filisterne komme mot meg til Gilgal, og jeg har ikke bønnfalt Herren. Derfor tvang jeg meg selv og ofret brennofferet.»

I said, 'Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.' So I forced myself and offered the burnt offering."

Samuel sa til Saul: «Du har handlet uforstandig. Du har ikke holdt det budet som Herren din Gud ga deg. Ellers ville Herren nå ha grunnfestet ditt kongedømme over Israel for alltid.

Samuel said to Saul, "You have acted foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, which He gave you. If you had, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.

Men nå skal ditt kongedømme ikke bestå. Herren har lett seg ut en mann etter sitt hjerte, og Herren har satt ham til leder over sitt folk, fordi du ikke har holdt det Herren befalte deg.»

But now your kingdom will not endure. The Lord has sought a man after His own heart and appointed him leader over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you."

Så reiste Samuel seg og gikk opp fra Gilgal til Gibea i Benjamin. Og Saul talte opp folket som var med ham, omtrent seks hundre mann.

Then Samuel left Gilgal and went up to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul counted the troops who were with him, about six hundred men.

Saul og hans sønn Jonatan og folket som var med dem, lå i Gibea i Benjamin. Mens filisterne hadde slått leir i Mikmas.

Saul, his son Jonathan, and the troops who were with them stayed in Gibeah of Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Michmash.

Raiderpartiet drog ut fra filisternes leir i tre deler. En del vendte seg mot veien til Ofra i landet Sual.

Then a raiding party went out from the camp of the Philistines in three divisions. One division turned toward Ophrah, in the land of Shual;

En annen del vendte seg mot veien til Bet-Horon, og en tredje del vendte seg mot grensen som vender over dalen Seboim, mot ørkenen.

another division turned toward Beth Horon; and the third division turned toward the border overlooking the Valley of Zeboim, toward the wilderness.

Nå fantes det ingen smed i hele Israels land, for filisterne sa: «Hebreerne må ikke lage seg sverd eller spyd.»

No blacksmith could be found throughout the whole land of Israel, because the Philistines said, 'Otherwise, the Hebrews might make swords or spears.'

Derfor måtte hele Israel gå ned til filisterne for å få slipt hver sin plog, hakke, øks eller sigd.

So all the Israelites had to go down to the Philistines to sharpen each person's plowshare, mattock, axe, or sickle.

Prisen for sliping var to tredjedels sekel for plogens blodrengjøring, for mattokkene, for trispissen og for å reparere piggstokken.

The price for sharpening plowshares, mattocks, pitchforks, and axes, or for setting goads, was two-thirds of a shekel.

Så på krigens dag var det verken sverd eller spyd å finne i noens hånd hos folket som var med Saul og Jonatan. Men hos Saul og hans sønn Jonatan fantes det.

So on the day of the battle, no sword or spear was found in the hands of the entire army with Saul and Jonathan, except for Saul and his son Jonathan themselves.

Og filisternes forpost drog ut til passet ved Mikmas.
