He removed the high places, broke the sacred pillars, cut down the Asherah poles, and smashed the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because the people of Israel had been burning incense to it, calling it Nehushtan.

He trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him.

He remained faithful to the LORD and did not turn away from following Him. He kept the commands that the LORD had given to Moses.

The LORD was with him; wherever he went, he succeeded. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.

Han slo filisterne helt til Gaza og deres områder, fra vakttårnet til den befestede byen.

He defeated the Philistines as far as Gaza and its borders, from watchtower to fortified city.

In the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah, king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria marched against Samaria and besieged it.

At the end of three years, they captured it. So in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah's reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.

King Hezekiah of Judah sent this message to the king of Assyria at Lachish: "I have done wrong. Withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand." So the king of Assyria imposed on Hezekiah king of Judah a tribute of three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

So Hezekiah gave all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the king's house.

At that time, Hezekiah stripped the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD and from the doorposts that he had overlaid and gave it to the king of Assyria.

The king of Assyria sent the Tartan, the Rab-saris, and the Rab-shakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah in Jerusalem with a large army. They came to Jerusalem, stood by the aqueduct of the upper pool on the road to the Launderer's Field, and delivered their message.

They called for the king, so Eliakim son of Hilkiah, Shebnah the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went out to meet them.

Then the Rab-shakeh said to them, "Tell Hezekiah: 'This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is this confidence you have?'

You say—but they are only empty words—'I have counsel and strength for war.' Now, in whom do you trust that you have rebelled against me?

But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ isn’t He the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?

Now then, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses—if you have riders to put on them!

Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, Shebnah, and Joah said to the Rab-shakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Don’t speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall."

But the Rab-shakeh replied, "Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you only? Has he not sent me to the people sitting on the wall—who will have to eat their excrement and drink their urine with you?"

Then the Rab-shakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew, saying, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!

This is what the king says: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you from my hand.

Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us: This city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.’

Hør ikke på Hiskia! For så sier Assyrerkongen: Gjør fred med meg og kom ut til meg, og spis hver av sin egen vinranke og sitt eget fikentre, og drikk hver av sitt eget brønnvann.

Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: ‘Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from your own vine and your own fig tree, and drink water from your own well,

Til jeg kommer og tar dere med til et land som deres eget, et land med korn og ny vin, et land med brød og vingårder, et land med oliventrær og honning, så dere kan leve og ikke dø! Hør ikke på Hiskia, for han fører dere vill når han sier: Herren skal redde oss.

until I come and take you to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey, so that you may live and not die. Do not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’

Has the god of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?

Who among all the gods of these lands has delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?'

Men folket holdt taushet og svarte ham ikke med et ord, for kongens befaling var: Svar ham ikke.

But the people remained silent and did not answer him a word, because the king had commanded, ‘Do not answer him.’

Så kom Eljakim, Hilkias sønn, som var over husholdningen, og Sjebna, skrivaren, og Joah, Asafs sønn, historieskriveren, til Hiskia med klærne sine revet i sørg, og de fortalte ham Rabshakehs ord.

Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, the palace administrator, Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and reported to him the words of the Rab-shakeh.
