Herren sendte Natan til David. Han kom til ham og sa: «To menn bodde i en by. Den ene var rik, og den andre var fattig.

The Lord sent Nathan to David. When Nathan arrived, he said to him, "There were two men in a city. One was rich, and the other was poor."

Den rike mannen hadde mange sauer og storfe i overflod.

The rich man had a great many flocks and herds.

Den fattige mannen hadde ingenting, unntatt en liten lamunge som han hadde kjøpt. Han pleide den, og den vokste opp sammen med ham og hans barn. Den spiste av hans brødstykke, drakk av hans kopp og lå i fanget hans. Det ble som en datter for ham.

But the poor man had nothing except one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It ate from his food, drank from his cup, and slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.

En reisende kom til den rike mannen, men han ville ikke ta av sine egne sauer eller storfe for å lage mat til den reisendes måltid. I stedet tok han lamungen fra den fattige mannen og tilberedte den for gjesten.

Now, a traveler came to the rich man, but he was unwilling to take from his own flock or herd to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the poor man’s ewe lamb and prepared it for his guest.

Da ble David brennende sint på mannen og sa til Natan: «Så sant Herren lever: Den mannen som har gjort dette, fortjener å dø!

David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, "As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this deserves to die!

Han skal erstatte lammet fire ganger, fordi han gjorde dette og viste ingen medlidenhet.»

He must pay back four times the price of the lamb because he did such a thing and had no pity!

Da sa Natan til David: «Du er mannen! Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Jeg salvet deg til konge over Israel, og jeg reddet deg fra Sauls hånd.

Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

Jeg ga deg din herres hus og din herres hustruer i dine armer. Jeg ga deg Israels hus og Juda. Og hvis det var for lite, ville jeg ha gitt deg enda mer.

'I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your arms. I also gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more.

Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in His eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites!

Derfor skal sverdet aldri vike fra ditt hus, fordi du har foraktet meg og tatt Hetitten Urias hustru til kone for deg selv.

Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.'

Så sier Herren: Se, jeg reiser opp ulykke over deg fra ditt eget hus. Jeg vil ta dine hustruer foran øynene dine og gi dem til en annen. Han skal ligge med dine hustruer i fullt dagslys.

This is what the Lord says: 'Look, I am going to bring disaster upon you from within your own household. I will take your wives before your very eyes and give them to someone close to you, who will sleep with them in broad daylight.

Du handlet i skjul, men jeg vil gjøre dette for hele Israel åpenlyst, i solen.»

You did it in secret, but I will make this happen in front of all Israel and in broad daylight.'

Da sa David til Natan: «Jeg har syndet mot Herren.» Natan sa til David: «Også Herren har tatt bort din synd. Du skal ikke dø.

Then David said to Nathan, 'I have sinned against the Lord.' Nathan replied, 'The Lord has taken away your sin; you will not die.

Men fordi du ved denne handlingen har gitt Herrens fiender grunn til å spotte ham, skal barnet som er født til deg, dø.»

However, because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the Lord, the son born to you will surely die.'

Så dro Natan hjem. Herren slo barnet som Urias hustru hadde født til David, og det ble alvorlig syk.

After Nathan had gone home, the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and the child became ill.

David ba til Gud for barnet. Han fastet, gikk inn og lå hele natten på bakken.

David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and spent the nights lying on the ground in sackcloth.

De eldste i hans hus forsøkte å få ham til å reise seg fra bakken, men han ville ikke. Han spiste heller ikke sammen med dem.

The elders of his household stood beside him to help him up from the ground, but he refused, and he would not eat any food with them.

På den syvende dagen døde barnet. Davids tjenere våget ikke å fortelle ham at barnet var dødt, for de sa til hverandre: «Mens barnet ennå levde, talte vi til ham, men han hørte ikke på oss. Hvordan kan vi da si til ham at barnet er dødt? Han kunne gjøre noe forferdelig.»

On the seventh day, the child died. David’s attendants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, 'While the child was still alive, we spoke to him but he would not listen to us. How can we now tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate.'

Men da David så at tjenerne hvisket sammen, forsto han at barnet var dødt. David spurte sine tjenere: «Er barnet dødt?» De svarte: «Ja, det er dødt.»

David noticed that his attendants were whispering among themselves, and he realized that the child was dead. 'Is the child dead?' he asked. 'Yes,' they replied, 'he is dead.'

Da reiste David seg fra bakken, vasket seg, salvet seg og skiftet klær. Han gikk inn i Herrens hus og bøyde seg i tilbedelse. Deretter gikk han hjem, ba om mat og spiste.

Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions, and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.

Tjenerne hans spurte ham: «Hva er dette du har gjort? Mens barnet var i live, fastet og gråt du, men nå som barnet er dødt, reiser du deg opp og spiser.»

His attendants asked him, 'Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!'

Han svarte: «Mens barnet var i live, fastet og gråt jeg, for jeg tenkte: Hvem vet om ikke Herren kan bli meg nådig og la barnet leve?

David answered, 'While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, 'Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live.''

Men nå er det dødt. Hvorfor skulle jeg da faste? Kan jeg bringe det tilbake igjen? Jeg går til det, men det kommer ikke tilbake til meg.»

But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.

David trøstet sin kone Batseba. Han gikk inn til henne, og hun fødte en sønn. Han kalte ham Salomo, og Herren elsket ham.

Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and lay with her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. The Lord loved him,

Han sendte ord med profeten Natan, og han kalte barnet Jedidja for Herrens skyld.

and because the Lord loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah.

Joab kjempet mot Rabbah hos ammonittene og inntok den kongelige byen.

Meanwhile, Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captured the royal city.

Joab sendte bud til David og sa: «Jeg har kjempet mot Rabbah og inntatt vannbyen.

Joab sent messengers to David, saying, 'I have fought against Rabbah and taken its water supply.

Samle derfor resten av hæren, slå leir mot byen og innta den, for at det ikke skal være jeg som inntar den og får mitt navn knyttet til byen.»

Now gather the rest of the troops and besiege the city and capture it. Otherwise, I will take the city, and it will be named after me.'

David samlet hele hæren, dro til Rabbah, kjempet mot byen og inntok den.

So David gathered all the troops, went to Rabbah, fought against it, and captured it.

Han tok kronen av deres konge. Den veide en talent gull og hadde en kostbar edelsten, og den ble satt på Davids hode. Han hentet ut byttet fra byen, i stor mengde.

David took the crown from the head of their king; its weight was a talent of gold, set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. He also took a great amount of plunder from the city.

Folket som var i byen, førte han ut. Han satte dem til arbeid med sager, jernhakker og jernøkser og lot dem arbeide i teglovnene. Det samme gjorde han med alle ammonittenes byer. Så vendte David og hele hæren tilbake til Jerusalem.

He brought out the people who were there, consigning them to labor with saws, iron picks, and axes, and made them work at brickmaking. David did this to all the Ammonite towns. Then he and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.
