Again the Lord's anger burned against Israel, and He incited David against them, saying, "Go, count the people of Israel and Judah."

Kongen sa da til Joab, hærføreren som var med ham: 'Gå gjennom alle Israels stammer, fra Dan til Beersheba, og gjør opp en liste over folket så jeg kan vite antallet blant folket.'

So the king said to Joab, the commander of the army who was with him, "Go through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and enroll the people, so that I may know how many there are."

But Joab said to the king, "May the Lord your God multiply the people a hundredfold while the eyes of my lord the king still see it. But why does my lord the king want to do this thing?"

Men kongens ord seiret over Joab og over hærens ledere, så Joab og hærens ledere gikk ut fra kongens nærvær for å telle folket i Israel.

Nevertheless, the king's word prevailed over Joab and the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.

De krysset Jordan og slo leir ved Aroer, sør for byen som ligger midt i dalen som tilhører Gad, og dro til Jaser.

They crossed the Jordan and camped at Aroer, on the right side of the city in the middle of the valley of Gad, and proceeded to Jazer.

Deretter kom de til Gilead og til landet Tahtim Hodshi, og så videre til Dan-Jaan og rundt omkring til Sidon.

Then they went to Gilead and the land of Tahtim Hodshi, and they came to Dan Jaan and around to Sidon.

De kom til Tyres festningsby og til alle byene til hevittene og kanaaneerne. Deretter dro de til Negev i Juda, til Beersheba.

They went to the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the Hivites and the Canaanites. Then they went to the Negev of Judah in Beersheba.

Så dro de omkring i hele landet, og etter ni måneder og tjue dager vendte de tilbake til Jerusalem.

After traveling through the entire land, they returned to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

Joab overleverte tallet på folket som var oppskrevet til kongen: Det var åtte hundre tusen dyktige menn i Israel som kunne dra sverd, og i Juda var det fem hundre tusen menn.

Joab reported the number of the people to the king: Israel had eight hundred thousand able men who could handle a sword, and Judah had five hundred thousand.

Men etter at han hadde talt folket, slo Davids hjerte ham, og han sa til Herren: 'Jeg har syndet stort ved det jeg har gjort. Men tilgi nå, Herre, din tjener for denne misgjerning, for jeg har handlet svært uforstandig.'

David's heart was troubled after he had numbered the people. He said to the Lord, "I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, Lord, please take away the guilt of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly."

Da David stod opp om morgenen, kom Herrens ord til profeten Gad, Davids seer, og sa:

The next morning, the word of the Lord came to Gad the prophet, David's seer, saying,

'Gå og tal til David: Så sier Herren: Jeg byr deg tre ting, velg én av dem, så jeg kan gjøre det mot deg.'

"Go and tell David, 'This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.'"

Gad gikk inn til David og fortalte ham dette og sa: 'Skal det komme syv års hungersnød i ditt land, eller skal du flykte for dine fiender i tre måneder mens de forfølger deg, eller skal det komme tre dager pest i ditt land? Tenk nå over dette, og se hva jeg skal svare han som sendte meg.'

So Gad went to David and said to him, "Shall there come seven years of famine in your land? Or shall you flee from your enemies for three months while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days of plague in your land? Now think it over and decide how I should reply to the One who sent me."

David svarte Gad: 'Jeg er i stor nød. La oss falle i Herrens hånd, for hans barmhjertighet er stor, men la meg ikke falle i menneskers hånd.'

David said to Gad, "I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for His mercies are many, but do not let me fall into human hands."

Så sendte Herren pest over Israel fra morgenen til den fastsatte tid, og sytti tusen menn døde fra Dan til Beersheba.

So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel from that morning until the appointed time, and seventy thousand men died from Dan to Beersheba.

Da engelen rakte ut hånden mot Jerusalem for å ødelegge den, angret Herren denne ulykken, og han sa til engelen som ødela folket: 'Det er nok! Hold nå din hånd tilbake.' Herrens engel var da ved jebusitten Araunas treskeplass.

But when the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the Lord relented concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was striking the people, "Enough! Withdraw your hand." The angel of the Lord was then at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Da David så engelen som slo folket, talte han til Herren: 'Se, jeg har syndet og handlet ondt, men hva har disse få gjort? La din hånd heller ramme meg og min fars hus.'

When David saw the angel striking the people, he said to the Lord, "I alone have sinned; I, the shepherd, have acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Let Your hand fall upon me and my family."

Samme dag kom Gad til David og sa: 'Gå opp og reis et alter for Herren på jebusitten Araunas treskeplass.'

That day, Gad came to David and said to him, "Go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite."

David gikk opp slik Gad hadde sagt etter Herrens anvisning.

So David went up, as the Lord had commanded through Gad.

Da så Arauna opp og fikk øye på kongen og hans tjenere som kom imot ham. Arauna gikk ut og bøyde seg til jorden for kongen.

When Araunah saw the king and his officials coming toward him, he went out and bowed down before the king with his face to the ground.

Arauna sa: 'Hvorfor kommer min herre kongen til sin tjener?' David svarte: 'For å kjøpe treskeplassen av deg og bygge et alter der for Herren, så denne pesten kan stanse for folket.'

Araunah said, "Why has my lord the king come to his servant?" David replied, "To buy your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, and the plague may be stopped from affecting the people."

Arauna sa til David: 'La min herre kongen ta det han finner godt i sine øyne, og tilby det. Se, her er oksene til brennofferet, treskesledene og oksenes redskaper til ved.'

Araunah said to David, "Let my lord the king take whatever pleases him and offer it up. Here are oxen for the burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.

Alt dette, konge, gir Arauna til kongen.' Og Arauna sa til kongen: 'Måtte Herren din Gud se på deg med velvilje.'

Everything, O king, Araunah gives to the king." Araunah also said to the king, "May the Lord your God accept you."

Men kongen svarte Arauna: 'Nei, jeg vil kjøpe det av deg for en pris. Jeg vil ikke ofre brennoffer til Herren min Gud som jeg har fått gratis.' Så kjøpte David treskeplassen og oksene for femti sekler sølv.

But the king said to Araunah, "No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not offer to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

Der bygde David et alter for Herren og ofret brennoffer og fredsoffer, og Herren var nådig mot landet, og pesten opphørte blant Israel.

David built an altar to the Lord there and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then the Lord answered prayer on behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.
