Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent for the satraps, prefects, governors, counselors, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the rulers of the provinces to attend the dedication of the statue he had set up.

So the satraps, prefects, governors, counselors, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the rulers of the provinces assembled for the dedication of the statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it.

Og en herold ropte kraftig: «Til dere blir det kunngjort, dere folk, nasjoner og språk:

Then the herald loudly proclaimed, 'Nations, peoples, and languages, this is what you are commanded to do!

When you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the golden statue that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.

Men den som ikke faller ned og tilber, skal straks kastes i den brennende ildovnen.»

Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing fiery furnace.'

Så snart alle folk hørte lyden av hornet, fløyten, harpen, lyren, triangelen og alle slags musikkinstrumenter, falt alle folk, nasjoner og språk ned og tilba billedstøtten av gull som kong Nebukadnesar hadde reist.

Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, and all kinds of music, all the nations, peoples, and languages fell down and worshiped the golden statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

Men straks etterpå kom noen kaldeiske menn fram og anklaget jødene.

At that time, some Chaldeans came forward and maliciously accused the Jews.

De tok til orde og sa til kong Nebukadnesar: «Leve kongen for evig!

They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, 'May the king live forever!

Kongen har gitt en befaling om at enhver som hører lyden av hornet, fløyten, harpen, lyren, triangelen, sekkepipen og alle slags musikkinstrumenter, skal falle ned og tilbe billedstøtten av gull.

You, O king, have issued a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the golden statue,

Og den som ikke faller ned og tilber, skal kastes i den brennende ildovnen.

and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing fiery furnace.

Men det finnes noen jødiske menn, som du har satt til å styre Babylonprovinsen: Sjadrak, Mesjak og Abed-Nego. Disse mennene ærer ikke deg, konge. De dyrker ikke din gud og tilber ikke billedstøtten du har reist.

But there are some Jews—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego—whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon. These men do not pay attention to you, O king; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.

Then Nebuchadnezzar, in rage and fury, gave orders to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. So these men were brought before the king.

Now, if you are ready, when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, to fall down and worship the statue I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will immediately be thrown into the blazing fiery furnace. And who is the god who can rescue you from my hands?'

Sjadrak, Mesjak og Abed-Nego svarte kongen: «Nebukadnesar, vi behøver ikke svare deg på dette.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego replied to the king, 'Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to answer you concerning this matter.

If the God we serve exists, he is able to rescue us from the blazing fiery furnace and deliver us from your hand, O king.

Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. He ordered that the furnace be heated seven times hotter than usual.

And he commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego and throw them into the blazing fiery furnace.

So the men were bound in their robes, trousers, turbans, and other clothes, and they were thrown into the midst of the blazing fiery furnace.

The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames killed the soldiers who carried Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego.

And these three men—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego—fell, bound, into the middle of the blazing fiery furnace.

Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; he stood up in alarm and said to his counselors, 'Did we not throw three men, bound, into the fire?' They answered the king, 'Certainly, O king.'

He exclaimed, 'Look! I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods!'

Then Nebuchadnezzar approached the opening of the blazing fiery furnace and called out, 'Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the Most High God, come out and come here!' So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came out of the fire.

The satraps, prefects, governors, and the king’s officials gathered around and saw that the fire had had no effect on the bodies of these men. Their hair was not singed, their clothes were not burned, and there was no smell of fire on them.

Nebukadnesar tok til orde og sa: «Velsignet være Sjadraks, Mesjaks og Abed-Negos Gud, som har sendt sin engel og reddet sine tjenere! De stolte på ham, trosset kongens ord og overga kroppene sine heller enn å tjene eller tilbe noen gud unntatt sin egen Gud.

Nebuchadnezzar declared, 'Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him, defied the king’s command, and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.

Therefore I issue a decree that any people, nation, or language that speaks against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego shall be cut into pieces and their houses reduced to rubble, for no other god can save in this way.'

Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego in the province of Babylon.

Nebukadnesar, kongen, skrev til alle folk, nasjoner og språk som bor over hele jorden: Måtte deres fred bli stor!

King Nebuchadnezzar, to all peoples, nations, and languages who dwell on the earth: May your peace be multiplied!

The signs and wonders that the Most High God has done for me are pleasing to declare.

Hans tegn er store, og hans under er mektige! Hans rike er et evig rike, og hans herredømme varer fra slekt til slekt.

How great are his signs, how mighty are his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion lasts from generation to generation.
