These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each man and his household.

Ruben, Simeon, Levi og Juda,

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah.

Issakar, Sebulon og Benjamin,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin.

Dan og Naftali, Gad og Asjer.

Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Alle som stammet fra Jakob, var sytti sjeler; men Josef var allerede i Egypt.

The total number of Jacob's descendants was seventy, and Joseph was already in Egypt.

Then Joseph, all his brothers, and that entire generation died.

Then a new king, who did not know about Joseph, arose to power in Egypt.

So they appointed taskmasters over them to oppress them with forced labor. They built supply cities for Pharaoh—Pithom and Rameses.

Yet, the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites.

The Egyptians forced the Israelites to work as slaves.

They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor, the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.

The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah,

"When you help the Hebrew women give birth and observe them on the birthing stools, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live."

Men jordmødrene fryktet Gud og gjorde ikke som kongen i Egypt hadde sagt til dem, men lot guttene leve.

The midwives, however, feared God and did not obey the king of Egypt's command; they let the boys live.

So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, "Why have you done this and allowed the boys to live?"

The midwives answered Pharaoh, "The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive."

So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very numerous.

Og fordi jordmødrene fryktet Gud, lot han dem få hjem.

And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.

Da bød farao hele sitt folk: «Hver sønn som blir født, skal dere kaste i Nilen, men hver datter skal dere la leve.»

Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, "Every boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.
