In the third month after the Israelites left the land of Egypt, on that very day, they came to the wilderness of Sinai.

De dro fra Refidim, og kom til Sinai-ørkenen, og leiret seg i ørkenen. Israel reiste seg der foran fjellet.

After setting out from Rephidim, they came into the wilderness of Sinai and camped there. Israel camped in front of the mountain.

Moses gikk opp til Gud, og Herren ropte til ham fra fjellet og sa: Dette skal du si til Jakobs hus og kunngjøre for Israels barn.

Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, "This is what you shall say to the house of Jacob and declare to the children of Israel:

Dere har sett hva jeg gjorde med egypterne, og hvordan jeg bar dere på ørnevinger og brakte dere til meg.

'You have seen what I did to Egypt and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself.

Hvis dere nå virkelig vil høre min røst og holde min pakt, skal dere være min eiendom framfor alle folk, for hele jorden er min.

Now, if you will carefully listen to My voice and keep My covenant, you will be My treasured possession out of all the nations, for the whole earth is Mine.

Dere skal være et kongerike av prester og et hellig folk for meg. Det er de ord du skal tale til Israels barn.

You will be for Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.

Moses kom og kalte til seg folkets eldste og la fram for dem alle de ord som Herren hadde befalt ham.

So Moses came and summoned the elders of the people. He set before them all the words that the LORD had commanded him.

Hele folket svarte samlet og sa: Alt det Herren har talt, vil vi gjøre. Moses brakte folkets ord tilbake til Herren.

And all the people answered together, saying, 'We will do everything the LORD has spoken.' Moses brought their words back to the LORD.

Herren sa til Moses: Se, jeg vil komme til deg i en tykk sky, så folket kan høre når jeg taler med deg og alltid tro på deg. Moses kunngjorde folkets ord for Herren.

The LORD said to Moses, 'Behold, I am coming to you in a dense cloud so that the people may hear when I speak with you and may always believe in you.' Then Moses reported the people's words to the LORD.

Herren sa til Moses: Gå til folket og hellige dem i dag og i morgen, og la dem vaske sine klær.

The LORD said to Moses, 'Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their garments.

Og la dem være rede til den tredje dagen, for på den tredje dagen skal Herren stige ned for øynene på hele folket på Sinai-fjellet.

They must be prepared for the third day, because on the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people on Mount Sinai.

Du skal avgrense fjellet for folket og si: Pass på at dere ikke går opp på fjellet eller rører dets kant. Hver den som rører fjellet, skal visselig dø.

Set boundaries for the people all around, saying, 'Be careful not to go up the mountain or touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain must surely be put to death.

Ingen hånd skal røre ved ham, men han skal stenes eller skytes; enten det er et dyr eller et menneske, skal han ikke leve. Når værhornet lyder lenge, skal de gå opp på fjellet.

No hand is to touch it; anyone who touches it must be stoned or shot with arrows. Whether animal or human, they must not be allowed to live.' Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they go up the mountain.

Så steg Moses ned fra fjellet til folket og helliget dem, og de vasket sine klær.

Moses went down from the mountain to the people, consecrated them, and they washed their garments.

Han sa til folket: Vær rede på den tredje dagen; ikke kom nær noen kvinne.

He said to the people, 'Be ready by the third day; do not go near a woman.'

Og på den tredje dagen, da morgenen brøt frem, var det torden og lyn, en tykk sky på fjellet og en meget sterk lyd av en basun. Hele folket i leiren skalv.

On the morning of the third day, there was thunder and lightning, a thick cloud on the mountain, and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people in the camp trembled.

Da førte Moses folket ut av leiren for å møte Gud, og de stilte seg nedenfor fjellet.

Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

Hele Sinai-fjellet stod i røk, fordi Herren steg ned på det i ild. Røken steg opp som røken fra en ovn, og hele fjellet skaket.

Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire. Its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently.

Lyden av basunen ble sterkere og sterkere. Moses talte, og Gud svarte ham med en stemme.

As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in the thunder.

Herren steg ned på Sinai-fjellets topp, og Herren kalte Moses opp til fjellets topp, og Moses gikk opp.

The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. Then the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

Herren sa til Moses: Gå ned og advar folket, så de ikke trenger seg fram til Herren for å se, og mange av dem faller.

The LORD said to Moses, 'Go down and warn the people not to force their way through to see the LORD, or many of them will perish.'

Også prestene, som nærmer seg Herren, må hellige seg, for at ikke Herren skal bryte ut mot dem.

Even the priests who come near the LORD must consecrate themselves, or the LORD will break out against them.

Moses sa til Herren: Folket kan ikke gå opp på Sinai-fjellet, for du advarte oss og sa: Avgrens fjellet og hellig det.

Moses said to the LORD, 'The people cannot come up Mount Sinai because You yourself warned us, saying: Set boundaries around the mountain and consecrate it.'

Herren sa til ham: Gå ned, og kom opp igjen, du og Aron med deg. Men prestene og folket må ikke trenge seg fram til Herren for ikke å bli rammet.

The LORD replied, 'Go down and bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way up to the LORD, or He will break out against them.'

Så gikk Moses ned til folket og sa det til dem.

So Moses went down to the people and told them.
