Moses var gjeter for flokken til sin svigerfar Jetro, presten i Midjan. Han ledet flokken til den andre siden av ørkenen og kom til Guds fjell Horeb.

Now Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

Herrens engel viste seg for ham i en flammende ild fra en busk. Moses så at busken brant, men den ble ikke fortært av flammene.

The angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that the bush was burning with fire, but it was not consumed.

Da sa Moses: «Jeg må gå bort og se på dette merkelige synet – hvorfor brenner ikke busken opp?»

So Moses said, 'I will turn aside to see this remarkable sight—why the bush is not burning up.'

Da Herren så at Moses kom bort for å se nærmere på det, ropte Gud til ham fra midten av busken: «Moses, Moses!» Og han svarte: «Her er jeg.»

When the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him out of the bush and said, 'Moses, Moses!' And Moses replied, 'Here I am.'

Han sa: «Kom ikke nærmere! Ta sandalene av føttene dine, for stedet du står på er hellig grunn.»

God said, 'Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.'

Han fortsatte: «Jeg er din fars Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud.» Da skjulte Moses ansiktet sitt, for han var redd for å se på Gud.

Then he said, 'I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' At this, Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.

Herren sa: «Jeg har sett folkets nød i Egypt, og jeg har hørt deres rop over slavearbeiderne. Jeg vet hvor mye de lider.

The LORD said, 'I have surely seen the affliction of my people in Egypt. I have heard their cry on account of their oppressors, and I am aware of their sufferings.'

Jeg har kommet ned for å befri dem fra Egypt og føre dem til et godt og vidstrakt land, et land som flyter av melk og honning, stedet hvor kanaanittene, hetittene, amorittene, perisittene, hevittene og jebusittene bor.

'So I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the place of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.'

Nå har Israels barns rop nådd meg, og jeg har også sett hvordan egypterne undertrykker dem.

'Now, the cry of the Israelites has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.'

Gå nå, jeg sender deg til farao for å føre mitt folk, Israels barn, ut av Egypt.»

'So now go! I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.'

Men Moses sa til Gud: «Hvem er jeg, at jeg skulle gå til farao og føre Israels barn ut av Egypt?»

But Moses said to God, 'Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?'

Gud svarte: «Jeg vil være med deg. Dette skal være tegnet for deg, at jeg har sendt deg: Når du har ført folket ut av Egypt, skal dere tilbe Gud på dette fjellet.»

God reassured him, 'I will certainly be with you. And this will be the sign to you that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.'

Da sa Moses til Gud: «Når jeg kommer til Israels barn og sier til dem: 'Deres fedres Gud har sendt meg til dere,' og de spør meg: 'Hva er hans navn?' Hva skal jeg da svare dem?»

Then Moses said to God, 'Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, "The God of your ancestors has sent me to you," and they ask me, "What is his name?" What should I tell them?'

Gud sa til Moses: «Jeg er den jeg er. Du skal si til Israels barn: 'Jeg er har sendt meg til dere.'»

God replied to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: "I AM has sent me to you."'

Gud sa også til Moses: «Slik skal du si til Israels barn: 'Herren, deres fedres Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud, har sendt meg til dere.' Dette er mitt navn for evig, dette er min minnesnavn fra generasjon til generasjon.

God also said to Moses, 'Say to the Israelites, "The LORD, the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered in every generation."

Gå og samle Israels eldste og si til dem: 'Herren, deres fedres Gud, Abrahams, Isaks og Jakobs Gud, har vist seg for meg og sagt: Jeg har sett på dere og det som har blitt gjort mot dere i Egypt.

Go, assemble the elders of Israel, and tell them, 'The LORD, the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—has appeared to me and said: "I have watched over you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt."

'And I have promised to bring you up out of your affliction in Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.'

De skal høre på deg. Du og Israels eldste skal gå til Egyptens konge og si til ham: 'Herren, hebreernes Gud, har møtt oss. Nå vil vi gå tre dagsreiser ut i ørkenen for å ofre til Herren vår Gud.'

The elders of Israel will listen to you. Then you, along with the elders, must go to the king of Egypt and say to him, 'The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God.'

Men jeg vet at Egyptens konge ikke vil la dere gå uten sterk hånd.

But I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go unless a mighty hand compels him.

Derfor vil jeg rekke ut min hånd og slå Egypt med alle mine under, som jeg vil gjøre iblant dem. Etter det vil han la dere dra.

So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them; after that, he will let you go.

And I will grant this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that when you leave, you will not go empty-handed.

Every woman is to ask her neighbor and any woman staying in her house for silver and gold jewelry and clothing, which you will put on your sons and daughters. So you will plunder the Egyptians.
