Det ble hungersnød i landet, i tillegg til den tidligere hungersnøden som hadde vært i Abrahams dager. Da dro Isak til Abimelek, filisternes konge i Gerar.

Now there was a famine in the land, apart from the earlier famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. So Isaac went to Abimelech, the king of the Philistines, in Gerar.

Herren åpenbarte seg for ham og sa: "Dra ikke ned til Egypt, men bli i det land som jeg sier deg.

The LORD appeared to him and said, "Do not go down to Egypt. Stay in the land that I will show you.

Bli boende som fremmed i dette landet, så vil jeg være med deg og velsigne deg. For til deg og din ætt gir jeg alle disse landene, og jeg vil oppfylle den eden jeg sverget til Abraham, din far.

Stay in this land, and I will be with you and bless you. For I will give all these lands to you and your descendants and will fulfill the oath I swore to Abraham your father.

Jeg vil gjøre din ætt tallrik som stjernene på himmelen, gi din ætt alle disse landene, og i din ætt skal alle jordens folkeslag velsignes.

I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and give them all these lands, and through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed.

Dette har jeg bestemt fordi Abraham hørte på min røst og holdt fast ved mine forpliktelser, mine bud, mine forskrifter og mine lover.

This is because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My instructions.

Så bodde Isak i Gerar.

So Isaac settled in Gerar.

Da mennene på stedet spurte ham om hans kone, sa han: "Hun er min søster," for han var redd for å si "min kone" i frykt for at de skulle drepe ham på grunn av Rebekka fordi hun var vakker.

When the people of that place asked him about his wife, he said, "She is my sister," because he was afraid to say, "She is my wife." He thought, "The men of this place might kill me because of Rebekah, for she is beautiful."

Da han hadde vært der en tid, så kong Abimelek av filisterne ut av vinduet og så Isak leke med Rebekka, sin kone.

After Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out a window and saw Isaac caressing Rebekah, his wife.

Da kalte Abimelek Isak til seg og sa: "Se, hun er jo din kone! Hvordan kunne du da si: 'Hun er min søster'?" Isak svarte: "Fordi jeg tenkte at jeg kunne dø for hennes skyld.

So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, "Surely, she is your wife. Why did you say, 'She is my sister'?" Isaac replied, "Because I thought I might be killed on account of her."

Abimelek sa: "Hva har du gjort mot oss? En av folket kunne lett ha lagt seg med din kone, og du ville ha brakt skyld over oss."

Then Abimelech said, "What have you done to us? One of the people could have easily slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us."

Så ga Abimelek en befaling til hele folket: "Den som rører ved denne mannen eller hans kone, skal visselig dø."

So Abimelech gave orders to all the people: "Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death."

Isak sådde i det landet og høstet det året hundrefold. Herren velsignet ham.

Isaac sowed seed in that land, and in that same year he reaped a hundredfold, because the LORD blessed him.

Mannen ble stor og gikk stadig framover, inntil han ble meget stor.

The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.

Han hadde store buskap av småfe, storfe og mange tjenere, og filisterne misunte ham.

He had many flocks, herds, and servants, so the Philistines envied him.

Alle brønnene som hans fars tjenere hadde gravd i Abrahams dager, fylte filisterne igjen med jord.

The Philistines stopped up all the wells that his father’s servants had dug during the days of Abraham his father, filling them with dirt.

Da sa Abimelek til Isak: "Forlat oss, for du har blitt mektigere enn vi."

Then Abimelech said to Isaac, "Leave us, for you have become much mightier than we are."

Så dro Isak bort derfra og slo leir i dalen ved Gerar, hvor han slo seg ned.

So Isaac departed from there, pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and settled there.

Isak gravde igjen de brønnene som var blitt gravd i hans far Abrahams dager, og som filisterne hadde fylt igjen etter Abrahams død. Han gav dem de samme navn som hans far hadde gitt dem.

Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham's death; he gave them the same names his father had given them.

Isaks tjenere gravde i dalen og fant der en kilde med rennende vann.

Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found a well of flowing water there.

Men gjeterne i Gerar kranglet med Isaks gjetere og sa: "Vannet er vårt." Derfor kalte han brønnen Esek, fordi de hadde trettet med ham.

But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen and said, "The water is ours!" So he named the well Esek, because they disputed with him.

De gravde en annen brønn, men de kranglet også om den, så han kalte den Sitna.

Isaac’s servants then dug another well, but they also quarreled over it. So he named it Sitnah.

Så flyttet han derfra og gravde en ny brønn, som det ikke ble kranglet om. Derfor kalte han den Rehobot og sa: "For nå har Herren gitt oss rom, og vi skal være fruktbare i landet."

He moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over this one. So he named it Rehoboth, and he said, "Now the LORD has given us room, and we will flourish in the land."

Derfra dro han opp til Beersheba.

From there Isaac went up to Beersheba.

Herren åpenbarte seg for ham den natten og sa: "Jeg er Abrahams, din fars Gud. Frykt ikke, for jeg er med deg og vil velsigne deg og gjøre din ætt tallrik, for Abrahams, min tjeners skyld."

That night the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham."

Da bygde han et alter der, påkalte Herrens navn og slo opp teltet sitt. Isaks tjenere gravde der en brønn.

So Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD. He pitched his tent there, and his servants dug a well.

Abimelek kom fra Gerar til ham, sammen med hans venn Akusatt og Pikol, hans hærfører.

Meanwhile, Abimelech came to him from Gerar with his adviser Ahuzzath and Phicol the commander of his army.

Isak sa til dem: "Hvorfor kommer dere til meg nå, når dere har hatet meg og sendt meg bort fra dere?"

Isaac asked them, "Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?"

De svarte: "Vi har tydelig sett at Herren er med deg. Så sa vi: 'La det være en ed mellom oss, mellom oss og deg, og la oss slutte en pakt med deg.

They replied, "We have clearly seen that the LORD has been with you. So we said, 'There should now be an oath between us and you; let us make a covenant with you.'"

At du ikke skal gjøre oss noe ondt, slik som vi ikke har berørt deg, men bare gjort deg godt og sendt deg bort i fred. Du er nå Herrens velsignede.'"

"You must not harm us, just as we have not harmed you but have always treated you well and sent you away in peace. Now you are blessed by the LORD."

Da gjorde han i stand et måltid for dem, og de spiste og drakk.

Then Isaac prepared a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

De sto tidlig opp neste morgen og sverget til hverandre. Så sendte Isak dem bort, og de dro fra ham i fred.

They rose early in the morning and took an oath to one another. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they departed from him in peace.

Samme dag kom Isaks tjenere og fortalte ham om brønnen de hadde gravd, og sa til ham: "Vi har funnet vann."

That same day, Isaac's servants came and told him about the well they had dug, saying, "We have found water!"

Han kalte den Sjeba. Derfor heter byen Beersheba den dag i dag.

He called it Shibah. Therefore, the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

Da Esau var 40 år, tok han til ekte Judith, datter av Beeri, en hetitt, og Basmat, datter av Elon, en hetitt.

When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

De var til stor sorg for Isak og Rebekka.

They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.
