Slangen var den mest listige av alle dyrene på marken som Herren Gud hadde skapt. Og den sa til kvinnen: "Har Gud virkelig sagt at dere ikke får spise av noen trær i hagen?"

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, 'Did God really say, you shall not eat from any tree in the garden?'

Kvinnen svarte slangen: "Vi kan spise frukten av trærne i hagen.

The woman said to the serpent, 'We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden.'

Men Gud sa at vi ikke må spise av eller røre ved frukten fra treet midt i hagen, for da vil vi dø."

'But of the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.''

Da sa slangen til kvinnen: "Dere vil slett ikke dø.

But the serpent said to the woman, 'You will surely not die.'

For Gud vet at den dagen dere spiser av det, vil øynene deres åpnes, og dere vil bli som Gud, kjennere av godt og ondt."

'For God knows that on the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.'

Da så kvinnen at treet var godt å spise av, en lyst for øynene, og et begjær for å få visdom. Hun tok av frukten og spiste. Hun ga også til mannen sin, som var med henne, og han spiste.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.

Da ble øynene deres åpnet, og de oppdaget at de var nakne. Så flettet de sammen fikenblader og laget belter seg imellom.

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

De hørte Herrens Gud stemme vandre omkring i hagen ved dagens kjølige vind, og Adam og hans hustru gjemte seg blant trærne i hagen for Herrens Guds åsyn.

They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden during the breeze of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

Men Herren Gud kalte på Adam og sa til ham: "Hvor er du?"

But the LORD God called out to the man and said to him, 'Where are you?'

Han svarte: "Jeg hørte din stemme i hagen, og jeg ble redd fordi jeg var naken, så jeg gjemte meg."

He said, 'I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid myself.'

Da sa Gud: "Hvem har fortalt deg at du er naken? Har du spist av treet jeg forbød deg å spise av?"

He said, 'Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?'

Adam svarte: "Kvinnen som du ga meg, hun ga meg av treet, og jeg spiste."

The man said, 'The woman you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.'

Da sa Herren Gud til kvinnen: "Hva er det du har gjort?" Kvinnen svarte: "Slangen lurte meg, og jeg spiste."

Then the LORD God said to the woman, 'What is this you have done?' The woman said, 'The serpent deceived me, and I ate.'

Så sa Herren Gud til slangen: "Fordi du har gjort dette, skal du være forbannet blant all buskap og alle ville dyr! På buken skal du krype, og støv skal du spise alle dine levedager.

So the LORD God said to the serpent, 'Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals. You will crawl on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life.'

Jeg setter fiendskap mellom deg og kvinnen, mellom din ætt og hennes ætt. Han skal knuse ditt hode, og du skal stikke hans hæl."

'And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.'

Til kvinnen sa Gud: "Jeg vil gjøre ditt strev stort i ditt svangerskap; med smerte skal du føde barn. Din lyst skal stå til din mann, og han skal råde over deg."

To the woman He said, 'I will greatly increase your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.'

Til Adam sa han: "Fordi du hørte på din kones røst og spiste av treet som jeg forbød, skal jorden være forbannet for din skyld. Med møye skal du livnære deg av den alle dine livsdager.

To Adam He said, 'Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, "You must not eat from it," cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.'

Den skal bære tistler og torn for deg, og du skal spise markens urter.

It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.

I ditt ansikts svette skal du spise ditt brød til du vender tilbake til jorden. For av den er du tatt. Støv er du, og til støv skal du vende tilbake."

By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread until you return to the ground, because from it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you will return.

Adam ga sin hustru navnet Eva, fordi hun ble mor til alle levende.

Adam named his wife Eve because she would become the mother of all the living.

Og Herren Gud laget klær av skinn til Adam og hans kone, og han kledde dem.

The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

Da sa Herren Gud: "Se, Adam har blitt som en av oss, kjent med godt og ondt. Nå må han ikke strekke ut hånden og ta også av livets tre, spise og leve evig."

Then the LORD God said, 'Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever—'

Så drev Herren Gud ham ut av Edens hage for å dyrke jorden som han var tatt av.

So the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.

Han drev ut mennesket, og øst for Edens hage satte han kjerubene og det flammende, svingende sverdet som skulle vokte veien til livets tre.

He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden He placed cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
