Jacob heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, 'Jacob has taken all that belonged to our father and has acquired all this wealth from what was our father’s.'

Jakob så på Labans ansikt og merket at han ikke var vennlig innstilt som før, slik han hadde vært tidligere.

Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was no longer the same as it had been before.

Herren sa til Jakob: «Vend tilbake til dine fedres land og slekt, og jeg vil være med deg.»

Then the LORD said to Jacob, 'Return to the land of your ancestors and to your family, and I will be with you.'

Jakob sendte bud og kalte på Rakel og Lea ute på marken der han hadde buskapen sin.

So Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah to come to the field where his flock was.

Han sa til dem: «Jeg ser at deres fars ansikt ikke er vennlig mot meg som før. Men min fars Gud har vært med meg.

He said to them, 'I see that your father’s attitude toward me is not as it was before, but the God of my father has been with me.'

Dere vet at jeg har tjent deres far med all min styrke.

You know that I have worked for your father with all my strength.

Deres far har imidlertid bedratt meg og forandret lønnen min ti ganger. Men Gud lot ham ikke skade meg.

Yet your father has deceived me and changed my wages ten times. But God did not let him harm me.

Hvis han sa: 'De flekkete skal være din lønn,' fødte hele flokken flekkete dyr. Og hvis han sa: 'De stripete skal være din lønn,' fødte hele flokken stripete dyr.

If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then the flock bore speckled young. And if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’ then the flock bore streaked young.

Slik tok Gud deres fars buskap fra ham og ga den til meg.

So God has taken away your father’s livestock and given it to me.

På den tiden da dyrene paret seg, løftet jeg blikket og så i en drøm at hanngeitene som sprang på flokken, var stripete, flekkete og prikkete.

During the mating season of the flock, I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled, and spotted.

Engelen fra Gud sa til meg i drømmen: 'Jakob!' Og jeg svarte: 'Her er jeg!'

In the dream, the angel of God said to me, 'Jacob!' And I replied, 'Here I am.'

Han sa: 'Løft blikket og se at alle hanngeitene som springer på flokken, er stripete, flekkete og prikkete. For jeg har sett alt det Laban har gjort mot deg.

He said, 'Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled, and spotted, because I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.

Jeg er Betels Gud, der du salvet en støtte og gjorde et løfte til meg. Stå nå opp, gå bort fra dette landet, og vend tilbake til ditt fødested.'

I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me. Now leave this land immediately and return to the land of your birth.'

Da svarte Rakel og Lea til ham: «Har vi lenger noen del eller arv i vår fars hus?

Then Rachel and Leah replied to him, 'Do we still have any portion or inheritance in our father’s house?

Behandler han oss ikke som fremmede? For han solgte oss, og han har brukt opp pengene som ble betalt for oss.

Does he not regard us as foreigners? For he has sold us and has even spent what was paid for us.

Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children. So do whatever God has told you to do.'

Da reiste Jakob seg, satte sine barn og koner på kamelene,

Then Jacob got up and put his children and his wives on camels.

He drove all his livestock and all the possessions he had acquired in Paddan Aram to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.

Meanwhile, Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole her father’s household idols.

Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was fleeing.

Han flyktet med alt han eide, krysset elven og dro mot Gileads fjell.

So Jacob fled with all he had. He crossed the river and set his face toward the hill country of Gilead.

På den tredje dagen fikk Laban høre at Jakob var rømt.

On the third day, Laban was informed that Jacob had fled.

Da tok han med seg sine slektninger og forfulgte ham i sju dager. Han tok ham igjen i Gileads fjell.

Taking his relatives with him, Laban pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.

Men Gud kom til Laban, arameeren, i en drøm om natten og sa til ham: 'Vokt deg for å si noe til Jakob, enten godt eller ondt.'

But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, 'Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.'

Da Laban tok Jakob igjen, hadde Jakob slått leir i fjellet, og Laban slo leir med slektningene sine i Gileads fjell.

Laban caught up with Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban and his relatives camped in the hill country of Gilead.

Laban sa til Jakob: 'Hva har du gjort? Du har lurt meg og ført bort mine døtre som fanger tatt med sverd.

Then Laban said to Jacob, 'What have you done? You deceived me and carried off my daughters like captives taken in war.

Hvorfor dro du i hemmelighet og stakk av uten å fortelle det til meg, så jeg kunne sendt deg bort med glede og med sanger, trommer og harper?

Why did you run away secretly and deceive me? You didn’t even let me know so I could send you away with joy and singing, to the music of tambourines and harps.

You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. You have done a foolish thing.

I have the power to harm you, but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’

Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household. But why did you steal my gods?

Jakob svarte Laban: 'Jeg var redd, for jeg tenkte at du kanskje ville ta dine døtre fra meg med makt.

Jacob answered Laban, 'I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.

Men den som du finner dine guder hos, skal ikke leve. Foran våre slektninger, se etter det jeg har hos meg og ta det.' Jakob visste ikke at Rakel hadde stjålet dem.

But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live. In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether anything of yours is here with me; and if so, take it.' Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.

Laban gikk da inn i Jakobs telt, og deretter inn i Leas telt og i teltet til de to slavekvinnene, men han fant ingenting. Etter at han hadde forlatt Leas telt, gikk han inn i Rakels telt.

So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the tent of the two female servants, but he found nothing. After he left Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent.

Men Rakel hadde tatt husgudene, lagt dem i kamelsalen og satt seg på dem. Laban lette gjennom hele teltet, men fant ingenting.

Rachel had taken the household idols, put them in the camel’s saddle, and was sitting on them. Laban searched the entire tent but did not find them.

Rachel said to her father, 'Let my lord not be angry that I cannot stand up in your presence, for I am having my period.' So he searched, but he did not find the household idols.

Da ble Jakob sint og klandret Laban. Jakob sa til Laban: 'Hva er min synd? Hva er min forbrytelse siden du har satt etter meg slik?'

Then Jacob became angry and confronted Laban. 'What is my crime?' he asked. 'What sin have I committed that you have pursued me?

Du har gjennomsøkt alle mine eiendeler. Hva fant du av dine ting? Legg det fram her foran mine og dine slektninger, så de kan dømme mellom oss to.

You have searched through all my belongings. What have you found that belongs to your household? Place it here in front of my relatives and yours, and let them judge between us.

I disse tjue årene jeg har vært hos deg, har dine sauer og geiter aldri mistet en eneste av sine unger, og rammene av flokken din har jeg aldri spist.

I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, and I have not eaten rams from your flocks.

I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night.

This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime, and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.

It was like this for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times.

If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the Fear of Isaac had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands, and last night he rebuked you.

Laban svarte Jakob: 'Døtrene er mine døtre, barna er mine barn, flokken er min flokk, og alt du ser, er mitt. Men hva kan jeg nå gjøre mot disse døtrene mine eller deres barn som de har født?

Laban answered Jacob, 'The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks. All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine or about the children they have borne?

Come now, let us make a covenant, you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.'

Deretter tok Jakob en stein og reiste den opp som en minnestein.

So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.

Jakob sa til slektningene sine: 'Samle steiner!' De samlet steiner og laget en haug, og så spiste de der ved haugen.

He said to his relatives, 'Gather some stones.' So they took stones and piled them in a heap, and they ate there by the heap.

Laban kalte den Jegar-Sahaduta, og Jakob kalte den Gilead.

Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.

Laban sa: 'Denne haugen er et vitne mellom deg og meg i dag.' Derfor ble den kalt Gilead.

Laban said, 'This heap is a witness between you and me today.' That is why it was called Galeed.

Den ble også kalt Mispa, for han sa: 'Måtte Herren holde vakt mellom deg og meg når vi ikke ser hverandre.

It was also called Mizpah, because he said, 'May the LORD watch between you and me when we are out of each other’s sight.

Hvis du mishandler mine døtre eller tar andre hustruer i tillegg til dem, må Gud, som er vitnet mellom oss, dømme, selv om ingen menneskelig vitne er med oss.'

If you mistreat my daughters or take other wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me.'

Laban sa til Jakob: 'Se denne haugen og denne minnesteinen som jeg har reist mellom deg og meg.

Laban also said to Jacob, 'Here is the heap, and here is the pillar I have set up between you and me.

Denne haugen er et vitne, og minnesteinen er et vitne: Om jeg går forbi denne haugen mot deg for å skade deg, eller hvis du går forbi denne haugen og denne minnesteinen mot meg for å skade meg.

This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not pass beyond this heap to harm you, and you will not pass beyond this heap and this pillar to harm me.

Må Abrahams Gud og Nakors Gud dømme mellom oss.' Jakob sverget ved frykten for sin far Isak.

May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.' So Jacob took an oath in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.

Så ofret Jakob et slaktoffer på fjellet og innbød slektningene sine til å spise et måltid. Og de spiste og overnattet på fjellet.

Then Jacob sacrificed a offering on the mountain and invited his relatives to a meal. They ate and spent the night on the mountain.
