Adam was intimate with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, 'I have acquired a man with the help of the LORD.'

Senere fødte hun hans bror Abel. Abel ble sauegjeter, mens Kain var bonde.

Later, she gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel tended flocks, while Cain worked the soil.

Over time, Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.

But Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering.

Men til Kain og hans offer så han ikke. Da ble Kain veldig sint, og ansiktet hans falt.

But He did not look with favor on Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his face was downcast.

Herren sa til Kain: 'Hvorfor er du sint, og hvorfor er ansiktet ditt så dystert?'

Then the LORD said to Cain, 'Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?'

Hvis du gjør godt, vil du ikke da bli akseptert? Men hvis du ikke gjør godt, ligger synden på lur ved døren. Dens trang er mot deg, men du skal herske over den.'

'If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.'

Kain talte til sin bror Abel. Da de var ute på marken, reiste Kain seg mot Abel, sin bror, og drepte ham.

Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let’s go out to the field.' While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Herren sa til Kain: 'Hvor er din bror Abel?' Han svarte: 'Jeg vet ikke. Er jeg min brors vokter?'

Then the LORD said to Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' He replied, 'I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?'

Herren sa: 'Hva har du gjort? Din brors blod roper til meg fra jorden.'

The LORD said, 'What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground.'

Nå er du forbannet fra jorden, som har åpnet sin munn for å ta imot din brors blod fra din hånd.

'Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.'

Når du dyrker jorden, skal den ikke lenger gi deg sin grøde. Du skal bli en flyktning og omstreifer på jorden.'

'When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.'

Kain sa til Herren: 'Min straff er større enn jeg kan bære.'

Cain said to the LORD, 'My punishment is more than I can bear.'

Se, i dag har du drevet meg bort fra jordens overflate, og jeg skal skjules for ditt ansikt. Jeg blir en flyktning og omstreifer på jorden, og alle som finner meg, vil drepe meg.'

'Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.'

Herren sa til ham: 'Derfor, hvem som helst som dreper Kain, skal utslettes syv ganger. Og Herren satte et tegn på Kain, for at ingen som fant ham, skulle slå ham i hjel.'

But the LORD said to him, 'Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.' Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

Kain dro bort fra Herrens nærhet og bosatte seg i landet Nod, øst for Eden.

So Cain went out from the LORD’s presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

Kain hadde samleie med sin kone, og hun ble gravid og fødte Hanok. Kain bygde en by og kalte den Hanok, etter sin sønn.

Cain was intimate with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named the city after his son Enoch.

Lamech married two wives, one named Adah and the other Zillah.

Lamek sa til sine koner: 'Ada og Silla, hør min stemme. Lameks koner, lytt til mitt ord. Jeg har drept en mann for min skade og en ung mann for min sår.'

Lamech said to his wives, 'Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.'

Hvis Kain skal hevnes syv ganger, skal Lamek syttisju ganger.'

If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times.

Adam hadde igjen samleie med sin kone, og hun fødte en sønn og kalte ham Set. For hun sa: 'Gud har gitt meg en annen sønn i Abels sted, for Kain drepte ham.'

Adam was intimate with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, 'God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.'
