In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying:

Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Dette folket sier: Det er ennå ikke tid for Herrens hus å bygges opp.

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: These people say, 'The time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.'

Da kom Herrens ord gjennom profeten Haggai og sa:

Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai, saying:

Er det tid for dere å bo i velutstyrte hus, mens dette huset ligger i ruiner?

Is this a time for you to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?

Nå sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Gi nøye akt på deres veier.

Now, this is what the LORD of Hosts says: Consider carefully your ways.

Dere har sådd mye, men høstet lite. Dere spiser, men blir ikke mette. Dere drikker, men blir ikke tilfredsstilt. Deres klær gir ikke varme, og den som tjener penger, legger dem i en hullete pung.

You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but are never satisfied. You drink but never have enough to be filled. You put on clothes but are not warm. The one who earns wages earns them to put into a bag with holes.

Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Gi nøye akt på deres veier.

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Consider carefully your ways.

Gå opp til fjellet, hent tre og bygg huset så det kan behage meg og jeg bli æret, sier Herren.

Go up into the mountains, bring down timber, and build the house, so that I may be pleased with it and be glorified, says the LORD.

Dere venter mye, men se, det blir så lite. Når dere bringer det hjem, blåser jeg det bort. Hvorfor? Sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud. Fordi mitt hus ligger i ruiner, mens dere haster hver til sitt eget hus.

You expected much, but it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew it away. Why?” declares the LORD of Hosts. “Because My house remains in ruins, while each of you is busy with your own house.

Derfor holder himmelen dugen tilbake over dere og jorden holder tilbake sin grøde.

Therefore, because of you, the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops.

Og jeg har innkalt tørke over landet, over fjellene, over kornet, nyvinen og oljen, over det som bakken bringer frem, over menneskene, dyrene og over alt deres henders arbeid.

I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil, and everything the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.

Da lyttet Serubabel, sønn av Sjealtiel, Josva, sønn av Josadak, den store presten, og hele restene av folket til røsten av Herren sin Gud, og til profeten Haggais ord, som Herren deres Gud hadde sendt ham. Og folket fryktet Herren.

Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the entire remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD.

Haggai, Herrens sendebud, talte Herrens budskap til folket: Jeg er med dere, erklærer Herren.

Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the LORD's message to the people, saying, 'I am with you,' declares the LORD.

Og Herren vekket ånden til Serubabel, sønn av Sjealtiel, stattholderen i Juda, og ånden til Josva, sønn av Josadak, den store presten, og ånden til hele restene av folket. Og de kom og begynte å arbeide på huset til Herren, hærskarenes Gud, deres Gud.

The LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD of Hosts, their God.

På den tjuefjerde dagen i den sjette måneden i det andre året av kong Darius.

On the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
