The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Zedekiah sent Pashhur son of Malkijah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest to him, saying,

"Spør Herren for oss, for Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, fører krig mot oss. Kanskje Herren vil gjøre med oss etter alle sine under, så han får Nebukadnesar til å trekke seg tilbake fra oss."

Inquire, please, of the LORD on our behalf, since Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is fighting against us. Perhaps the LORD will deal with us according to all His wonderful works, so that he may withdraw from us.

Da sa Jeremia til dem: «Så skal dere si til Sidkia:

But Jeremiah said to them, "This is what you shall say to Zedekiah:

Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: 'Se, jeg vil vende tilbake krigens våpen som er i deres hender, som dere bruker til å kjempe mot kongen av Babylon og kaldeerne som beleirer dere utenfor muren. Jeg vil samle dem inne i denne byen.

"Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Behold, I am turning back the weapons of war in your hands, with which you are fighting against the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls. I will gather them into the midst of this city.

Jeg selv vil kjempe mot dere med utstrakt hånd og med sterk arm, i vrede, harm og stor harme.

And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand, a strong arm, in anger, in fury, and with great wrath.

Jeg vil slå innbyggerne i denne byen, både mennesker og dyr. En stor pest skal ramme dem, og de skal dø.

I will strike the inhabitants of this city—both man and beast—with a great plague, and they will die.

Og etter dette, sier Herren, vil jeg overgi Sidkia, kongen av Juda, hans tjenere og folket, de som overlever pesten, sverdet og hungersnøden, i hendene på Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, på deres fiender og på dem som søker deres liv; og han skal slå dem ned med sverd, uten skånsel, barmhjertighet eller medfølelse.

Afterward, declares the LORD, I will hand over Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials, the people, and those remaining in this city from the plague, the sword, and the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those seeking their lives. He will strike them down with the edge of the sword without pity, without sparing, and without mercy.

Og til dette folket skal du si: Så sier Herren: Se, jeg setter foran dere livets vei og dødens vei.

Now you shall also say to this people: "Thus says the LORD: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

Den som blir værende i denne byen, skal dø sverdet, hungersnøden og pesten. Men den som går ut og overgir seg til kaldeerne som beleirer dere, skal leve; han skal få sin sjel som krigsbytte.

Whoever remains in this city will die by the sword, famine, and plague. But whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you will live; they shall save their life as a prize.

For jeg har satt mitt ansikt mot denne byen til ulykke, og ikke til lykke, sier Herren. Den skal bli overgitt i kongen av Babylons hånd, og han skal brenne den opp med ild.

For I have set my face against this city for disaster and not for good, declares the LORD. It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, who will burn it with fire.

Og til kongens hus i Juda: Hør Herrens ord!

To the house of the king of Judah: Hear the word of the LORD.

Du Davids hus! Så sier Herren: Gjør rett om morgenen, og redd den som er røvet, fra overfallsmannen. Ellers vil min vrede bryte ut som ild og brenne, uten at noen kan slukke den, på grunn av deres onde gjerninger.

House of David, this is what the LORD says: Execute justice in the morning and rescue the one who is robbed from the hand of the oppressor, or my wrath will go out like fire and burn with no one to extinguish it, because of the evil of your deeds.

Se, jeg er imot deg, du som bor i dalene, på klippen i slettene, sier Herren, dere som sier: 'Hvem kan komme ned mot oss? Og hvem kan komme inn i våre boliger?'

Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, O rock of the plain, declares the LORD. You who say, 'Who can come against us? Who can enter our dwellings?'

Men jeg vil straffe dere etter frukten av deres gjerninger, sier Herren. Jeg vil sette ild i skogen hennes, og den skal fortære alt omkring den.

I will punish you according to the fruit of your deeds, declares the LORD. I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it will consume everything around her.
