I det fjerde regjeringsåret til Jojakim, sønn av Josjia, kongen av Juda, kom dette ordet til Jeremia fra Herren:

In the fourth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying:

Ta deg en bokrull og skriv ned alle de ordene jeg har talt til deg om Israel, Juda og alle folkeslagene, fra den dagen jeg begynte å tale til deg under kong Josjia, til denne dag.

Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah, and all the nations, from the days of Josiah until today.

Kanskje Judas hus vil høre om alt det onde jeg har planlagt å gjøre mot dem, slik at de vender om, hver fra sine onde veier. Da vil jeg tilgi deres misgjerninger og synder.

Perhaps the house of Judah will hear about all the disaster I intend to bring upon them, so that each one may turn from his wicked way. Then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.

Da tilkalte Jeremia Baruk, sønn av Neria, som skrev ned på en bokrull alt Herren hadde talt til Jeremia, slik Jeremia talte det til ham.

So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on the scroll from Jeremiah’s dictation all the words that the LORD had spoken to him.

Jeremiah then commanded Baruch, saying, "I am detained; I cannot go to the house of the LORD.

Så gå selv og les opp fra bokrullen som du skrev ned ordene til Herren fra min munn. Les det opp for folket i Herrens hus på en fastedag, og også for alle fra Juda som kommer fra byene sine.»

But you, go and read aloud from the scroll, which you have written at my dictation, the words of the LORD in the hearing of the people in the house of the LORD on a day of fasting. Also read them in the hearing of all Judah, who come from their cities.

Kanskje deres bønn vil bli hørt for Herrens ansikt, og de vil vende om, hver fra sine onde veier. For Herrens vrede og harme, som han har talt mot dette folket, er stor.

Perhaps they will bring their plea before the LORD, and each one will turn from his wicked way, for great are the anger and wrath that the LORD has pronounced against this people.

Baruk, sønn av Neria, fulgte alt det profeten Jeremia hadde befalt ham og leste Herrens ord opp fra bokrullen i Herrens hus.

Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet commanded him. He read from the scroll the words of the LORD in the house of the LORD.

I det femte regjeringsåret til Jojakim, sønn av Josjia, kongen av Juda, i den niende måneden, ble en faste utropt foran Herrens ansikt for hele folket i Jerusalem og for alle som kom fra byene i Juda.

In the fifth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, a fast was proclaimed before the LORD for all the people in Jerusalem and those who had come from the towns of Judah.

Da leste Baruk fra bokrullen Jeremias ord i Herrens hus, i statsskriveren Gemarjas rom, sønn av Sjafan, i øvre forgård ved inngangen til Den nye porten til Herrens hus, for hele folket.

Then Baruch read from the scroll the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper court at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD’s house, in the hearing of all the people.

Da Mika, sønn av Gemarja, sønn av Sjafan, hørte alle Herrens ord fra bokrullen,

When Micaiah son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD from the scroll,

gikk han ned til kongens palass, til statsskriverens rom. Der satt alle lederne – statsskriveren Elisjama, Delaja, sønn av Sjemaja, Elnatan, sønn av Akbor, Gemarja, sønn av Sjafan, Sidkia, sønn av Hananja, og alle de andre lederne.

he went down to the king’s palace, to the chamber of the secretary, where all the officials were sitting—Elishama the secretary, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.

Mika fortalte dem alle de ordene han hadde hørt da Baruk leste fra bokrullen for folket.

Then Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read from the scroll to the people.

Da sendte lederne Jehudi, sønn av Netanja, sønn av Sjelemja, sønn av Kusi, til Baruk og sa: «Ta med deg bokrullen som du leste for folket, og kom hit.» Så tok Baruk, sønn av Neria, med seg bokrullen og gikk til dem.

So all the officials sent Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, "Bring the scroll from which you have read aloud to the people, and come." So Baruch son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and went to them.

De sa til ham: «Sett deg ned og les den for oss.» Da leste Baruk den for dem.

The officials said to him, "Please sit down and read it to us." So Baruch read it to them.

Da de hørte alle ordene, så de forferdet på hverandre og sa til Baruk: «Vi må fortelle alt dette til kongen.»

When they heard all the words, they turned to each other in fear and said to Baruch, "We must report all these words to the king."

Så spurte de Baruk: «Fortell oss hvordan du skrev ned alle disse ordene fra hans munn.»

Then they asked Baruch, "Tell us, how did you write all these words? Did Jeremiah dictate to you?"

Baruk svarte dem: «Han dikterte alle disse ordene for meg, og jeg skrev dem ned med blekk på bokrullen.»

Baruch answered them, "Jeremiah dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them down with ink on the scroll."

Da sa lederne til Baruk: «Gå og skjul deg, du og Jeremia, og la ingen få vite hvor dere er.»

The officials said to Baruch, "You and Jeremiah must hide, and don’t let anyone know where you are."

Så gikk de inn til kongen i forgården, men de la bokrullen i rommet til statsskriveren Elisjama. De fortalte alt dette til kongen.

After they put the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the secretary, they went to the king in the courtyard and reported all these words to him.

Da sendte kongen Jehudi for å hente bokrullen. Han tok den fra rommet til statsskriveren Elisjama. Så leste Jehudi den for kongen og alle lederne som sto rundt ham.

The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. Jehudi brought it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary and read it aloud to the king and all the officials standing by him.

Det var den niende måneden, og kongen satt i vinterhuset sitt med en ildgryte som brant foran seg.

Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, and a firepot was burning in front of him.

Hver gang Jehudi hadde lest tre eller fire spalter, skar kongen dem av med en kniv og kastet dem i ilden på fyrfatet, til hele bokrullen var oppbrent i ilden.

As Jehudi read three or four columns of the scroll, the king would cut them off with a scribe’s knife and throw them into the fire in the firepot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire.

Verken kongen eller noen av tjenerne hans ble grepet av frykt eller flerret klærne sine da de hørte alle disse ordene.

Neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words were afraid or tore their garments in sorrow.

Even though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.

Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a royal prince, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the LORD had hidden them.

Etter at kongen hadde brent opp bokrullen med de ordene som Baruk hadde skrevet ned etter Jeremias diktat, kom Herrens ord til Jeremia:

After the king burned the scroll containing the words Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

«Ta deg en ny bokrull og skriv på den alle de første ordene som sto på den første bokrullen, den som Jojakim, kongen av Juda, har brent opp.

"Take another scroll and write on it all the original words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned.

Og om Jojakim, kongen av Juda, skal du si: ‘Så sier Herren: Du brente denne bokrullen og sa: Hvorfor har du skrevet at kongen av Babel skal komme og ødelegge landet og utrydde både mennesker og dyr?’

And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘This is what the LORD says: You burned this scroll, saying, “Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon will surely come and destroy this land and leave it without people or animals?”’

Derfor sier Herren om Jojakim, kongen av Juda: Ingen av hans slekt skal sitte på Davids trone. Hans lik skal bli kastet ut i varmen om dagen og kulden om natten.

Therefore, this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body will be thrown out to the heat by day and to the frost by night.

Jeg vil straffe ham, hans slekt og tjenerne hans for deres skyld. Jeg vil føre over dem og innbyggerne i Jerusalem og folket i Juda all den ulykken som jeg har forkynt mot dem, men som de ikke har hørt på.’

I will punish him, his descendants, and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the people of Judah, all the disaster I have pronounced against them, because they have not listened to me.

Så tok Jeremia en ny bokrull og gav den til Baruk, sønn av Neria, skriveren. Og han skrev på den etter Jeremias diktat alle de ordene som hadde stått på den bokrullen som Jojakim, kongen av Juda, hadde brent opp i ilden. Mange lignende ord ble lagt til.

Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch son of Neriah, the scribe, who wrote on it at Jeremiah’s dictation all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many more similar words were added to them.
