Kong Sidkia, sønn av Josjia, ble konge i stedet for Konja, sønn av Jojakim, som Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babel, hadde innsatt som konge i Juda.

King Zedekiah son of Josiah became king in place of Coniah son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed to rule over the land of Judah.

Men verken han, hans tjenere eller folket i landet hørte på ordene fra Herren som ble sagt gjennom profeten Jeremia.

Neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land listened to the words of the LORD, which He spoke through the prophet Jeremiah.

Kong Sidkia sendte Jehukal, sønn av Selemja, og presten Sefanja, sønn av Maaseja, til profeten Jeremia for å si: "Be for oss til Herren, vår Gud."

King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to the prophet Jeremiah with this message: "Please pray to the LORD our God for us."

Jeremia gikk fritt inn og ut blant folket, for de hadde ennå ikke satt ham i fengsel.

Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put into prison.

Mens faraos hær hadde marsjert ut fra Egypt, og kaldeerne som beleiret Jerusalem hadde hørt rapporten om dem, dro de bort fra Jerusalem.

Pharaoh's army had marched out of Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew from the city.

Da kom Herrens ord til profeten Jeremia, og han sa:

Then the word of the LORD came to the prophet Jeremiah:

Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Slik skal dere si til Judas konge som sendte dere for å konsultere meg: Se, faraos hær, som har dratt ut for å hjelpe dere, skal vende tilbake til sitt land Egypt.

This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: You are to tell this to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of me: 'Pharaoh's army, which has marched out to help you, will return to its own land, to Egypt.'

Da skal kaldeerne komme tilbake, kjempe mot denne byen, innta den og sette den i brann.

'Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city; they will capture it and burn it with fire.'

Så sier Herren: Bedra dere ikke selv ved å si: "Kaldeerne vil dra bort fra oss", for de skal ikke dra.

This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, 'The Chaldeans will surely leave us,' for they will not leave.

For selv om dere hadde slått hele kaldeernes hær som kjemper mot dere, og bare de sårede mennene ble igjen, ville hver av dem reise seg i sitt telt og sette denne byen i brann.

Even if you were to strike down the entire Chaldean army fighting against you, and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.

Det skjedde da kaldeernes hær hadde trukket seg tilbake fra Jerusalem på grunn av faraos hær,

When the Chaldean army withdrew from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army,

at Jeremia dro ut fra Jerusalem for å gå til Benjamins land for å motta sin arv blant folket.

Jeremiah started to leave Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to claim his share of property among the people.

Men da han var ved Benjamins port, var det en vaktoffiser ved navn Jerijah, sønn av Selemja, sønn av Hananja, som arresterte profeten Jeremia og sa: "Du deserterer til kaldeerne!"

But when he reached the Benjamin Gate, a captain of the guard named Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, was there. He arrested Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!"

Jeremia svarte: "Det er en løgn! Jeg deserterer ikke til kaldeerne." Men Jerijah lyttet ikke til ham, arresterte Jeremias og førte ham til de øverste.

Jeremiah replied, "That is a lie! I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." But Irijah would not listen to him. Instead, he seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.

De øverste ble sinte på Jeremia, slo ham og satte ham i fengsel i huset til skrivermesteren Jonatan, for det var gjort om til fengsel.

The officials were furious with Jeremiah, and they beat him and put him in prison, in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which had been made into a prison.

Da Jeremia kom inn i fangehullet og cellene, satt han der mange dager.

When Jeremiah was put into the dungeon and the cells, he remained there for many days.

Kong Sidkia sendte bud og hentet ham; kongen spurte ham hemmelig i sin bolig: "Er det kommet noe ord fra Herren?" Jeremia svarte: "Ja, det er det." Og han sa: "Du skal bli overgitt i hendene på kongen av Babel."

Then King Zedekiah sent for him and secretly questioned him in his palace, saying, "Is there any word from the LORD?" Jeremiah replied, "There is. You will be handed over to the king of Babylon."

Jeremia sa så til kong Sidkia: "Hva har jeg gjort mot deg, dine tjenere eller dette folket, siden dere har satt meg i fengsel?

Then Jeremiah asked King Zedekiah, "What crime have I committed against you, your officials, or this people, to justify putting me in prison?

Hvor er deres profeter nå, de som profeterte til dere: 'Kongen av Babel vil ikke komme mot dere eller dette landet?'

Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, 'The king of Babylon will not come against you or this land'?

Så lytt nå, herre konge, la meg få legge fram min anmodning for deg, og ikke send meg tilbake til husbonds Jonatans hus, ellers vil jeg dø der.

Now please hear me, my lord the king. Let my plea come before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I will die there.

Kong Sidkia gav da ordre, og de satte Jeremia i vaktgården. De ga ham en brødkake hver dag fra bakergaten, inntil alt brødet i byen var oppbrukt. Så ble Jeremia værende i vaktgården.

So King Zedekiah commanded that Jeremiah be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread daily from the bakers' street until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
