Da hørte Sefatja, sønn av Matan, Gedalja, sønn av Pashur, Jukal, sønn av Sjelemja, og Pashur, sønn av Malkia, de ordene som Jeremia talte til hele folket og sa:

Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchiah heard the words Jeremiah was speaking to all the people:

Så sier Herren: Den som forblir i denne byen, skal dø ved sverd, hunger og pest. Men den som går over til kaldeerne, skal leve. Han vil få sitt liv til bytte og skal leve.

This is what the LORD says: Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine, or plague. But whoever goes out to the Chaldeans will live; they will escape with their life and survive.

Så sier Herren: Denne byen skal uten tvil bli overgitt til hærstyrkene til Babylons konge, og han skal innta den.

This is what the LORD says: This city will surely be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.

Da sa høvdingene til kongen: Denne mannen må dø, for han svekker kampmoralen til soldatene som er igjen i denne byen, og til hele folket, ved å si slike ord. For denne mannen søker ikke folkets fred, men deres undergang.

The officials said to the king, "This man must be put to death, because he is discouraging the soldiers who remain in the city and all the people by speaking these words to them. He is not seeking the welfare of this people, but only their harm."

Kong Sidkia svarte: Han er i deres hender, for kongen kan ingenting gjøre mot dere.

King Zedekiah replied, "He is in your hands. The king can do nothing to oppose you."

Så tok de Jeremia og kastet ham i cisternen til Malkia, kongens sønn, som var i vaktgården. De firte Jeremia ned med tau. Men i cisternen var det ikke vann, bare gjørme, og Jeremia sank ned i gjørmen.

So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.

Da hørte etioperen Ebed-Melek, en hoffmann som bodde i kongens hus, at de hadde satt Jeremia ned i cisternen. Samtidig satt kongen i Benjamin-porten.

Now Ebed-Melech, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting at the Benjamin Gate,

Ebed-Melek gikk ut fra kongens hus og sa til kongen:

Ebed-Melech went out of the palace and said to the king,

Min herre konge! Disse mennene har handlet ondt i alt det de har gjort mot profeten Jeremia, som de kastet i cisternen. Der kommer han til å dø av sult, for det er ikke mer brød i byen.

"My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will die from hunger, since there is no longer any bread in the city."

Da gav kongen etioperen Ebed-Melek ordre og sa: Ta med deg tretti menn herfra og dra opp profeten Jeremia fra cisternen før han dør.

The king commanded Ebed-Melech the Cushite, "Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies."

Ebed-Melek tok mennene med seg og gikk inn i kongens hus, til et rom under skattkammeret. Der tok de filler og utslitte klær og firte dem ned til Jeremia i cisternen med tau.

So Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down to Jeremiah in the cistern with ropes.

Ebed-Melek, etioperen, sa til Jeremia: Legg, vær så snill, disse filler og utslitte klær under armhulene dine, under tauene. Og Jeremia gjorde slik.

Ebed-Melech the Cushite said to Jeremiah, "Put these worn-out rags and clothes under your arms to pad the ropes." Jeremiah did so,

Så dro de Jeremia opp med tauene og fikk ham opp fra cisternen. Og Jeremia ble værende i vaktgården.

and they pulled Jeremiah up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the guard.

Senere sendte kong Sidkia bud etter profeten Jeremia. Han lot ham bli ført til inngangen til den tredje porten i Herrens hus, og kongen sa til Jeremia: Jeg vil spørre deg om noe; skjul ikke noe for meg.

Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to the third entrance to the temple of the LORD. "I am going to ask you something," the king said to Jeremiah. "Do not hide anything from me."

Jeremia svarte Sidkia: Hvis jeg forteller deg det, vil du da ikke drepe meg? Og hvis jeg gir deg råd, vil du ikke høre på meg.

Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "If I give you an answer, will you not put me to death? And even if I did give you advice, you would not listen to me."

Da sverget kong Sidkia i hemmelighet til Jeremia: Så sant Herren lever, han som har gitt oss livet, jeg skal verken ta livet ditt eller overgi deg til de mennene som søker ditt liv.

But King Zedekiah swore an oath secretly to Jeremiah, "As surely as the LORD lives, who has given us breath, I will neither put you to death nor hand you over to those who want to kill you."

Da sa Jeremia til Sidkia: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Går du ut til Babylons konges fyrster, skal du berge livet og denne byen skal ikke bli brent med ild. Du og ditt hus skal leve.

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "This is what the LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live.

Men hvis du ikke går ut til Babylons konges fyrster, skal denne byen bli overgitt i kaldeernes hender. De skal brenne den med ild, og du skal ikke slippe unna deres hånd.

But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, and they will burn it down; you yourself will not escape from their hands.’"

Da sa kong Sidkia til Jeremia: Jeg er redd for judeerne som har gått over til kaldeerne, at de skal overgi meg i deres hånd, og at de skal håne meg.

King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me over to them, and they will mistreat me."

Jeremia svarte: De skal ikke overgi deg! Hør nå på Herrens ord, det jeg taler til deg, så skal det gå deg vel, og din sjel skal leve.

Jeremiah said, "They will not hand you over. Please listen to the voice of the LORD in what I am telling you, so that it may go well for you and your life will be spared.

Men hvis du nekter å gå ut, er dette det ord som Herren har latt meg se:

But if you refuse to surrender, this is the word the LORD has shown me:

Se, alle kvinnene som er igjen i Judas konges hus skal bli ført ut til Babylons konges fyrster. De skal si: "Dine venner har narret og beseiret deg. Dine føtter sank i myren, men de trakk seg unna."

"All the women who are left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. They will say to you: ‘Your trusted friends have misled you and have overcome you. Your feet are sunk in the mud, and they have turned away and left you.’

Alle dine koner og sønner skal bli ført ut til kaldeerne, og du selv skal ikke slippe unna deres hånd. Du skal bli tatt av Babylons konge, og denne byen skal bli brent med ild.

They will also bring out all your wives and your children to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape from their hands but will be captured by the king of Babylon, and this city will be burned down."

Da sa Sidkia til Jeremia: Ingen må få vite om disse ordene, ellers kan du miste livet.

Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "Do not let anyone know about these matters, or you may die.

Hvis høvdingene får vite at jeg har talt med deg, og de kommer til deg og sier: Fortell oss hva du sa til kongen og hva kongen sa til deg, skjul det ikke for oss, så skal vi ikke drepe deg,

If the officials hear that I talked with you and come to you, saying, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us, or we will put you to death,’

da skal du svare dem: Jeg fremførte min bønn for kongen om at han ikke måtte sende meg tilbake til Jonatans hus for å dø der.

then tell them, ‘I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan’s house to die there.’"

Da kom alle høvdingene til Jeremia og spurte ham, og han svarte dem slik kongen hadde pålagt ham. Så forlot de ham, for saken var ikke blitt kjent.

All the officials did come to Jeremiah and questioned him, and he told them everything the king had ordered him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had heard the conversation.

Og Jeremia ble værende i vaktgården helt til den dagen da Jerusalem ble inntatt. Og det skjedde da Jerusalem ble inntatt.

And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured. And it happened when Jerusalem was taken.
