Og Herrens ord kom til Jona, sønn av Amittai, og sa:

The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,

Stå opp og dra til Ninive, den store byen, og rop ut mot den, for deres ondskap har steget opp til meg.

Arise, go to the great city of Nineveh, and proclaim against it, because their wickedness has come up before me.

Men Jona sto opp for å flykte til Tarsis bort fra Herrens nærhet. Han dro ned til Jaffa og fant et skip som skulle til Tarsis. Han betalte for reisen og gikk om bord for å dra med dem til Tarsis bort fra Herrens nærhet.

But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, found a ship going to Tarshish, paid the fare, and boarded it to go with them to Tarshish, away from the Lord.

Men Herren kastet en sterk vind over havet, og det ble en voldsom storm, slik at skipet holdt på å bli knust.

But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was about to break apart.

Da ble sjømennene redde og ropte hver til sin gud. De kastet lasten i sjøen for å lette skipet. Men Jona hadde gått ned i skipets innerste deler, lagt seg ned og sovnet tungt.

The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down to the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep.

Kapteinen kom til ham og sa: «Hvordan kan du sove? Stå opp og rop til din Gud! Kanskje Gud vil tenke på oss så vi ikke går under.»

The captain came to him and said, "What are you doing, sound asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps your god will consider us, so that we will not perish."

Da sa de til hverandre: «Kom, la oss kaste lodd for å finne ut hvem som er skyld i denne ulykken.» Så kastet de lodd, og loddet falt på Jona.

And they said to one another, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity that has come upon us." So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

Da spurte de ham: «Fortell oss hvem som er skyld i denne ulykken vi er i. Hva er ditt yrke, og hvor kommer du fra? Hva er ditt land, og av hvilket folk er du?»

Then they said to him, "Please tell us! Who is responsible for causing this trouble for us? What is your occupation, and where do you come from? What is your country, and of what people are you?"

Han svarte dem: «Jeg er en hebreer, og jeg frykter Herren, himmelens Gud, som har skapt havet og det tørre land.»

And he answered, "I am a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."

Da ble mennene grepet av stor frykt og sa til ham: «Hva er det du har gjort!» De visste at han var på flukt fra Herrens nærhet, for han hadde fortalt dem det.

Then the men were terrified, and they said to him, "What have you done?" For they knew he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them so.

De spurte ham: «Hva skal vi gjøre med deg så havet blir rolig igjen?» For havet ble bare mer og mer opprørt.

Then they said to him, "What should we do to you so that the sea will calm down for us?" For the sea was growing more and more tempestuous.

Han svarte dem: «Ta meg og kast meg i havet, så blir det rolig for dere. For jeg vet at det er min skyld denne store stormen har kommet over dere.»

He said to them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will calm down for you, for I know that it is because of me this great storm has come upon you."

Men mennene rodde med all kraft for å komme tilbake til land, men de kunne ikke, for havet ble stadig mer og mer opprørt mot dem.

Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to return to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew increasingly stormy against them.

Da ropte de til Herren og sa: «Å, Herre, la oss ikke gå under på grunn av denne manns liv, legg ikke uskyldig blod på oss. For du, Herre, har gjort som du ville.»

Then they cried out to the Lord, saying, "Please, Lord, do not let us perish for taking this man's life, and do not hold us accountable for innocent blood. For you, Lord, have done as you pleased."

Så tok de Jona og kastet ham i havet, og havet sluttet å rase.

They picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging.

Da ble mennene grepet av stor frykt for Herren, og de ofret slaktoffer til Herren og avla løfter.

Then the men feared the Lord greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to Him.
