When all the people had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua,

Ta tolv menn fra folket, én mann fra hver stamme,

“Choose twelve men from among the people, one man from each tribe,

og befaling dem å hente tolv steiner fra midten av Jordan, fra stedet hvor prestene står, og ta dem med dere til det stedet hvor dere skal overnatte.

and command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from the spot where the priests’ feet stand firm, carry them with you, and set them down at the place where you will spend the night.’”

So Joshua called the twelve men he had chosen from the Israelites, one man from each tribe,

and he said to them, “Cross ahead of the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take a stone on his shoulder, one for each of the tribes of the Israelites.

This will serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’

you shall tell them, ‘The waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD when it crossed the Jordan. The waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the Israelites forever.’”

Israels barn gjorde som Josva befalte dem, og de hentet tolv steiner fra midten av Jordan, slik Herren hadde sagt til Josva, etter antallet til Israels stammer. De bar dem med seg til leirstedet og la dem der.

So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, as the LORD had told Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites. They carried them over with them to their camp and set them down there.

Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, under the place where the priests carrying the ark of the covenant stood, and they are there to this day.

Prestene som bar arken, sto midt i Jordan inntil alt var fullført som Herren hadde befalt Josva å si til folket, etter alt det Moses hadde pålagt Josva. Folket skyndte seg over.

The priests carrying the ark stood in the middle of the Jordan until everything was completed that the LORD commanded Joshua to tell the people, just as Moses had instructed Joshua. The people hurried and crossed over.

When all the people had completed crossing, the ark of the LORD and the priests also crossed over, in the sight of the people.

The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over, armed for battle, in front of the Israelites, as Moses had directed them.

Omkring førti tusen væpnede menn gikk over for Herrens ansikt til kamp på Jordans ødemarker ved Jeriko.

About forty thousand armed for battle crossed over before the LORD to the plains of Jericho, ready for war.

Den dagen opphøyde Herren Josva i øynene på hele Israel, og de fryktet ham som de hadde fryktet Moses alle hans levedager.

On that day the LORD exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they revered him all the days of his life, just as they had revered Moses.

Herren talte til Josva og sa:

Then the LORD said to Joshua,

“Command the priests carrying the ark of the testimony to come up from the Jordan.”

So Joshua commanded the priests, saying, “Come up from the Jordan.”

Da prestene som bar Herrens paktsark, steg opp av Jordan, tørket deres føtter opp på det tørre land, og Jordans vann vendte tilbake til sitt leie og fløt som før over alle sine bredder.

When the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD came up from the middle of the Jordan, and their feet touched dry ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and flowed over all its banks as they had before.

Folket kom opp fra Jordan på den tiende dagen i den første måneden, og de slo leir ved Gilgal, ved østre grense av Jeriko.

The people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month and camped at Gilgal, on the eastern border of Jericho.

De tolv steinene som de tok ut av Jordan, reiste Josva ved Gilgal.

And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan.

Han sa til Israels barn: Når deres barn i morgen spør deres fedre og sier: Hva er disse steinene?

He said to the Israelites, “In the future, when your children ask their fathers, ‘What do these stones mean?’

Da skal dere la deres barn vite og si: Israel gikk på det tørre over denne Jordan,

You are to let your children know: 'Israel crossed the Jordan here on dry ground.'

for Herren deres Gud tørket Jordans vann for deres ansikt til dere hadde gått over, som han også gjorde med Sivsjøen, som han tørket for vårt ansikt til vi hadde gått over,

For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed, just as the LORD your God did to the Red Sea when He dried it up before us until we had crossed over.

for at alle jordens folk skal kjenne Herrens hånd, at den er mektig, for at dere alltid skal frykte Herren deres Gud.

He did this so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, and so that you may always fear the LORD your God.
