When all the kings west of the Jordan—those in the hill country, the lowlands, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the territory opposite Lebanon—heard about this, the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites,

they came together as one to fight against Joshua and Israel.

Men innbyggerne i Gibeon hørte hva Josva hadde gjort med Jeriko og Ai.

But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,

De handlet også listig og dro av sted som om de var sendebud, tok med seg gamle sekker på eslene sine og utslitte, revnede og lappete vinsekker,

they also acted with cunning. They disguised themselves as messengers, taking worn-out sacks for their donkeys, old and torn wineskins that had been mended.

og hadde slitte og lappete sandaler på føttene og utslitte klær på seg. Alt brødet de hadde med seg som niste, var tørt og muggent.

They wore patched and worn-out sandals and clothes, and all the bread they carried as provisions was dry and crumbled.

De dro til Josva i leiren ved Gilgal og sa til ham og til mennene i Israel: «Vi er kommet fra et land langt borte. Så gjør nå en pakt med oss.»

They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel: “We have come from a distant land; now make a treaty with us.”

Men mennene i Israel sa til hevittene: «Kanskje dere bor blant oss. Hvordan kan vi da gjøre pakt med dere?»

But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you are living among us. How then can we make a treaty with you?”

De svarte Josva: «Vi er dine tjenere.» Josva spurte dem: «Hvem er dere, og hvor kommer dere fra?»

They replied to Joshua, “We are your servants.” But Joshua said to them, “Who are you, and where do you come from?”

De svarte ham: «Dine tjenere er kommet fra et meget fjernt land på grunn av Herren din Guds navn, for vi har hørt om ryktet om ham og alt han har gjort i Egypt,

They answered him, “Your servants have come from a very distant land because of the name of the LORD your God. For we have heard of His fame and all He did in Egypt,

og alt han gjorde med de to amorittkongene på andre siden av Jordan, med Sihon, kongen i Hesjbon, og med Og, kongen i Basan, som holdt til i Astarot.

and all He did to the two Amorite kings beyond the Jordan—to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

Våre eldste og alle som bor i vårt land, sa til oss: Ta med proviant for reisen og dra for å møte dem, og si til dem: «Vi er deres tjenere. Gjør nå en pakt med oss.»

So our elders and all the inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for the journey and go to meet them. Tell them: We are your servants; now make a treaty with us.’

Dette brødet var varmt da vi tok det med fra våre hus den dagen vi dro ut for å komme til dere. Men nå, se, det er tørt og muggent.

This bread of ours was warm when we took it as provisions from our houses on the day we set out to come to you, but now it is dry and crumbled.

Disse vinsekkene var nye da vi fylte dem, men se, nå er de revnet. Våre klær og sandaler er blitt utslitte på grunn av den lange reisen.»

These wineskins were new when we filled them, but see how they have burst. Our clothes and sandals are worn out from the very long journey.”

Mennene tok da av deres proviant, men rådførte seg ikke med Herren.

The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD.

Josva gjorde fred med dem og inngikk en pakt med dem om å la dem leve, og menighetens fyrster sverget dem en ed.

Then Joshua made a peace treaty with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly swore an oath to them.

Men tre dager etter at de hadde gjort pakten med dem, fikk de høre at de var deres naboer og bodde midt iblant dem.

After three days, once they had made a treaty with them, the Israelites learned that these people were actually their neighbors, living among them.

Israels barn brøt opp og kom til byene deres på den tredje dagen. Byene deres var Gibeon, Kefira, Beerot og Kirjat-Jearim.

So the Israelites set out and on the third day they arrived at the cities of Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.

Israels barn angrep dem ikke, fordi menighetens fyrster hadde sverget dem en ed ved Herren, Israels Gud. Men hele menigheten klaget på fyrsterne.

But the Israelites did not attack them because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole assembly grumbled against the leaders.

Alle fyrsterne sa da til hele menigheten: «Vi har sverget dem en ed ved Herren, Israels Gud. Nå kan vi ikke røre ved dem.

But all the leaders said to the assembly, 'We have sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.'

Dette skal vi gjøre med dem: La dem leve, så ikke vrede kommer over oss på grunn av eden vi har sverget dem.»

This is what we will do to them: We will let them live so that no wrath will fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.

Fyrsterne sa til dem: «La dem leve.» Og de ble hukere av ved og bærere av vann for hele menigheten, slik som fyrsterne hadde sagt til dem.

They also said, 'Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the entire assembly,' just as the leaders had directed.

Josva kalte dem til seg og sa: «Hvorfor har dere sveket oss og sagt at dere bodde langt borte fra oss, enda dere bor midt iblant oss?

Then Joshua summoned them and said, 'Why did you deceive us by saying, “We live far away from you,” while in fact you live among us?'

Nå skal dere være forbannet, og blant dere skal det aldri mangle treller, huggere av ved og bærere av vann for min Guds hus.»

'Now therefore, you are under a curse and will always serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.'

De svarte Josva: «Dine tjenere fikk tydelig beskjed om hvordan Herren din Gud hadde befalt sin tjener Moses å gi dere hele landet og utrydde alle som bor der. Derfor ble vi meget redde for våre liv, og vi gjorde dette.

They answered Joshua, 'Your servants were clearly told how the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you this entire land and destroy all its inhabitants before you. So we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.'

Og nå er vi i dine hender. Gjør med oss som det synes godt og rett i dine øyne.»

Now we are in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.

Josva gjorde slik med dem og reddet dem fra Israels barns hånd, så de ikke drepte dem.

So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them.

På den dagen innlemmet Josva dem som huggere av ved og bærere av vann for menigheten og Herrens alter, på stedet som han skulle velge. Og det er de den dag i dag.

On that day, Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly and for the altar of the LORD at the place He would choose. And they continue to do so to this day.
