Verse 1
Etter at Josva var død, spurte Israels barn Herren og sa: «Hvem av oss skal først dra opp mot kanaaneerne for å kjempe mot dem?»
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Who will go up first for us to fight against the Canaanites?"
Verse 2
Herren svarte: «Juda skal dra opp; se, Jeg har gitt landet i hans hånd.»
The LORD answered, "Judah shall go up. I have given the land into his hand."
Verse 3
Da sa Juda til sin bror Simeon: «Dra opp med meg til min lodd, så vi kan kjempe mot kanaaneerne. Deretter vil jeg også dra med deg til din lodd.» Og Simeon gikk med ham.
Then Judah said to his brother Simeon, "Come with me into my allotted territory, and let us fight the Canaanites together. I will also go with you into your territory." So Simeon went with him.
Verse 4
Juda drog opp, og Herren gav kanaaneerne og perisittene i deres hender. De slo dem ved Besek, ti tusen mann.
Judah went up, and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands. They struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.
Verse 5
De fant Adoni-Besek i Besek og kjempet mot ham. De slo kanaaneerne og perisittene.
At Bezek, they found Adoni-bezek, fought against him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
Verse 6
Adoni-Besek flyktet, men de forfulgte ham, grep ham og hogg av tomlene og stortærne hans.
Adoni-bezek fled, but they chased him, caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
Verse 7
Adoni-Besek sa: «Sytti konger med avhogde tomler og stortær samlet smuler under mitt bord. Som jeg har gjort, har Gud gjengjeldt meg.» De førte ham til Jerusalem, hvor han døde.
Then Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to gather scraps under my table. As I have done, so God has repaid me." They brought him to Jerusalem, where he died.
Verse 8
Judas barn førte krig mot Jerusalem, inntok byen, slo dens innbyggere med sverdets egg og satte byen i brann.
The men of Judah fought against Jerusalem, captured it, struck it down with the sword, and set the city on fire.
Verse 9
Deretter dro Judas barn ned for å kjempe mot kanaaneerne som bodde i fjellene, i Negev og i lavlandet.
Afterward, the men of Judah went down to fight the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev, and the lowland.
Verse 10
Juda drog mot kanaaneerne som bodde i Hebron – Hebron het før Kirjat-Arba – og de slo Sjesjai, Ahiman og Talmai.
Judah also attacked the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly known as Kiriath-arba), and they defeated Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
Verse 11
Derfra drog de mot Debirs innbyggere. Debir het tidligere Kirjat-Sefer.
From there, they went against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
Verse 12
Kaleb sa: «Den som slår Kirjat-Sefer og inntar det, skal få min datter Aksa til kone.»
Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Achsah in marriage to the one who attacks and captures Kiriath-sepher."
Verse 13
Otniel, sønn av Kenaz, Kalebs yngre bror, inntok det, og Kaleb gav ham sin datter Aksa til kone.
Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, captured it, and Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah in marriage.
Verse 14
Da hun kom, oppmuntret hun ham til å be faren om en mark. Hun steg ned fra eselet, og Kaleb spurte henne: «Hva ønsker du?»
When she came to him, she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. She got down from her donkey, and Caleb asked her, "What do you want?"
Verse 15
Hun svarte: «Gi meg en velsignelse! Siden du har gitt meg land i Negev, gi meg også vannkilder.» Kaleb gav henne de øvre og nedre kildene.
She answered him, "Give me a blessing, since you have given me land in the Negev, now give me springs of water as well." So Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
Verse 16
Etterkommerne etter kenitten, Moses’ svigerfar, dro opp fra Palmelandet sammen med Judas barn til Judas ørken sør for Arad. Der slo de seg ned blant folket.
The descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the City of Palms to the wilderness of Judah in the Negev near Arad. They went and lived among the people there.
Verse 17
Juda dro med sin bror Simeon, og de slo kanaaneerne som bodde i Sefat. De viet byen til undergang og kalte den Horma.
Judah went with his brother Simeon, and together they defeated the Canaanites living in Zephath. They destroyed the city completely, and they named it Hormah.
Verse 18
Juda inntok også Gaza med omliggende land, Ashkelon med omliggende land og Ekron med omliggende land.
Then Judah captured Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ekron, along with their surrounding territories.
Verse 19
Herren var med Juda, og han tok fjellene i besittelse, men han kunne ikke drive ut dem som bodde i lavlandet, for de hadde jernvogner.
The LORD was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plains because they had iron chariots.
Verse 20
De gav Hebron til Kaleb, slik Moses hadde sagt, og han drev ut Anakittenes tre sønner derfra.
They gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had promised, and Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak from it.
Verse 21
Men Benjamins barn drev ikke ut jebusittene som bodde i Jerusalem, så jebusittene bor blant Benjamins barn i Jerusalem den dag i dag.
The Benjaminites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived there with the Benjaminites to this day.
Verse 22
Josefs hus dro også opp mot Betel, og Herren var med dem.
The people of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
Verse 23
Josefs hus sendte folk til å speide ut Betel. Byens navn var før Luz.
The house of Joseph spied out Bethel, which had previously been called Luz.
Verse 24
Speiderne så en mann komme ut av byen, og de sa til ham: «Vis oss inngangen til byen, så skal vi vise deg barmhjertighet.»
The spies saw a man coming out of the city and said to him, "Please show us how to enter the city, and we will treat you kindly."
Verse 25
Han viste dem inngangen til byen, og de slo byen med sverdets egg, men mannen og hele hans familie lot de gå.
He showed them the way into the city, and they struck the city with the sword but let the man and his family go free.
Verse 26
Mannen dro til hetittenes land, bygde en by og kalte den Luz. Det er navnet på byen den dag i dag.
The man went to the land of the Hittites, built a city, and named it Luz, which is its name to this day.
Verse 27
Manasse drev ikke ut innbyggerne i Bet-Sjean med omliggende byer, Taanak med omliggende byer, Dor med omliggende byer, Jibleam med omliggende byer eller Megiddo med omliggende byer. Kanaaneerne fortsatte å bo i dette landet.
Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its surrounding villages, or Taanach and its surrounding villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its surrounding villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its surrounding villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its surrounding villages. The Canaanites were determined to stay in this land.
Verse 28
Da Israel ble sterkere, gjorde de kanaaneerne til tvangsarbeidere, men drev dem ikke helt ut.
When Israel became strong, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not completely drive them out.
Verse 29
Efraim drev ikke ut kanaaneerne som bodde i Gezer. Kanaaneerne bodde derfor blant dem i Gezer.
Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer; the Canaanites continued to live among them in Gezer.
Verse 30
Sebulon drev ikke ut innbyggerne i Kitron eller innbyggerne i Nahalol. Kanaaneerne bodde blant dem, men de ble gjort til tvangsarbeidere.
Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol. The Canaanites continued to live among them, but they were subjected to forced labor.
Verse 31
Asjer drev ikke ut innbyggerne i Akko, Sidon, Ahlab, Akzib, Helba, Afik eller Rehob.
Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.
Verse 32
Asjers folk bodde blant kanaaneerne, som var landets innbyggere, fordi de ikke drev dem ut.
The Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, because they did not drive them out.
Verse 33
Naftali drev ikke ut innbyggerne i Bet-Semes eller innbyggerne i Bet-Anat, men han bodde blant kanaaneerne, som var landets innbyggere. Innbyggerne i Bet-Semes og Bet-Anat ble gjort til tvangsarbeidere for dem.
Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh or Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, but the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were subjected to forced labor.
Verse 34
Amorittene trengte Dans barn opp i fjellene og lot dem ikke komme ned i dalen.
The Amorites pressed the people of Dan into the hill country, not allowing them to come down to the valley.
Verse 35
Amorittene var fast bestemt på å bo på Heres-fjellet, i Ajalon og i Shaalbim, men Josefs hus fikk overtaket, og de ble gjort til tvangsarbeidere.
The Amorites were determined to remain in Mount Heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim. However, the hand of the house of Joseph grew stronger, and the Amorites were subjected to forced labor.
Verse 36
Amorittenes grense gikk fra Akrabbim-stigningen, fra Sela og oppover.
The boundary of the Amorites was from the Ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and onward.
