På den tiden var det ingen konge i Israel, og i de dager søkte Dans stamme etter et område hvor de kunne bosette seg, fordi de fram til da ikke hadde fått en arv blant stammene i Israel.

In those days, Israel had no king, and during that period, the tribe of Dan was looking for a place to settle because they had not yet received an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.

Dans etterkommere sendte fra sine familier fem menn som var krigere, fra Zora og Eshtaol, for å utforske landet og undersøke det. De sa til dem: «Gå og undersøk landet!» Og de kom til Efraims fjelland, til Mikas hus, og de overnattet der.

The Danites sent five men from their clans, strong and valiant men from Zorah and Eshtaol, to spy out the land and explore it. They said to them, 'Go and explore the land.' When they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to Micah's house, they stayed there for the night.

Mens de var nær Mikas hus, gjenkjente de stemmen til den unge levitten, og de gikk av veien dit og spurte ham: «Hvem har brakt deg hit? Hva gjør du her, og hvorfor er du her?»

As they were near Micah's house, they recognized the voice of the young Levite. They turned aside and said to him, 'Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? And what is your purpose here?'

He said to them, 'Micah did such and such for me. He hired me, and I became his priest.'

Så sa de til ham: «Spør nå Gud, så vi kan vite om veien vi går på kommer til å lykkes.»

They said to him, 'Please inquire of God so that we may know whether our journey will be successful.'

Presten svarte dem: «Gå i fred. Veien dere går på er under Herrens oppsyn.»

The priest replied to them, 'Go in peace. The LORD is watching over your journey.'

Så dro de fem mennene videre og kom til Laish. Der så de folket som bodde trygt, etter sidonernes skikk, stille og trygge. Det var ingen som hersket over dem eller krenket dem i landet. De var langt borte fra sidonerne og hadde ingen forbindelse med noen andre.

The five men left and came to Laish. They saw that the people there were living in security, like the Sidonians—peaceful and unsuspecting. No one in the land was oppressing them or causing harm. They lived far from the Sidonians and had no relationship with any other people.

Da de kom tilbake til sine brødre i Zora og Eshtaol, spurte brødrene deres: «Hva har dere funnet ut?»

When they returned to their brothers in Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers asked them, 'What do you report?'

De svarte: «Stå opp, la oss dra opp mot dem! For vi har sett landet, og det er veldig godt. Hvorfor nøler dere? Vær ikke vegrende med å gå for å ta landet i besittelse!»

They said, 'Let us go up against them, for we have seen the land and it is very good. Why are you hesitating? Do not delay in going to take possession of the land!'

Når dere kommer dit, vil dere finne et folk som lever trygt, og et land som er bredt og åpent. Gud har gitt det i deres hender, et sted hvor det ikke mangler noe av det som finnes i verden.

When you arrive, you will find a secure and unsuspecting people. The land is spacious, for God has given it into your hands—a place lacking nothing that is good.

Så dro seks hundre menn fra Dans stamme, fra Zora og Eshtaol, bevæpnet for krig.

So six hundred men from the Danite clan left Zorah and Eshtaol, armed with weapons for battle.

De dro opp og slo leir ved Kiriat-Jearim i Juda. Derfor kalles stedet fremdeles Dan-leiren den dag i dag. Det ligger vest for Kiriat-Jearim.

They went up and encamped in Kiriath-jearim in Judah. That is why to this day the place is called Mahaneh Dan (the camp of Dan), located west of Kiriath-jearim.

Derfra dro de videre til Efraims fjelland og kom til Mikas hus.

From there they continued on to the hill country of Ephraim and arrived at Micah's house.

Da tok de fem mennene som hadde vært ute for å utforske landet, til orde og sa til sine brødre: «Vet dere at det finnes en efod, noen terafim, en utskåret billedstøtte og en støpt figur i disse husene? Tenk nå over hva dere skal gjøre.»

Then the five men who had gone to scout out the land of Laish said to their fellow Danites, 'Do you know that in these houses there's an ephod, household gods, a carved image, and a cast idol? Now think about what you should do.'

Så vendte de seg dit og gikk inn i huset til den unge levitten, Mikas hus, og hilste vennlig på ham.

So they turned aside there and went to the house of the young Levite, at Micah's house, and asked him how he was doing.

Seks hundre menn av Dans stamme, bevæpnet til krig, sto ved inngangen til porten.

The six hundred men of the Danites, armed with their weapons of war, were standing at the entrance of the gate.

De fem mennene som hadde vært ute for å utforske landet, gikk opp og tok den utskårne billedstøtten, efoden, terafim og den støpte figuren, mens presten sto ved inngangen til porten sammen med de seks hundre væpnede mennene.

The five men who had gone to scout the land went inside and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the cast idol, while the priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred armed men.

De gikk inn i Mikas hus og tok den utskårne billedstøtten, efoden, terafim og den støpte figuren. Presten sa til dem: «Hva er det dere gjør?»

When they entered Micah's house and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the cast idol, the priest said to them, 'What are you doing?'

De svarte ham: «Vær stille. Legg hånden på munnen og bli med oss. Bli far og prest for oss. Er det ikke bedre å være prest for en hel stamme og familie i Israel enn for én manns hus?»

They answered him, 'Be quiet! Put your hand over your mouth and come with us. Be a father and a priest to us. Isn’t it better for you to be a priest for a tribe and a clan in Israel rather than for one man's household?'

Da ble presten glad. Han tok efoden, terafim og den utskårne billedstøtten og fulgte med folket.

The priest was glad in his heart. He took the ephod, the household gods, and the carved image and went along with the people.

De snudde seg og dro videre, mens de satte barna, buskapen og eiendelene sine først.

They turned and left, placing the children, the livestock, and their goods in front of them.

Da de hadde kommet et godt stykke fra Mikas hus, samlet mennene som bodde i nærheten av Mikas hus seg og forfulgte Dans menn.

When they had gone some distance from Micah’s house, the men who lived near Micah gathered together and overtook the Danites.

De ropte til Dans menn, som snudde seg rundt og sa til Mika: «Hva er det du vil, siden du har samlet folk mot oss?»

They called out to the Danites, who turned to face them, and said to Micah, 'What’s the matter with you, that you have called your men together?'

Han svarer: «Dere har tatt gudene jeg har laget, og presten min, og gått deres vei. Hva har jeg igjen? Hvordan kan dere spørre meg: 'Hva er det du vil?'»

Micah replied, 'You’ve taken my gods that I made and my priest and gone away! What else do I have? How can you ask me, “What’s the matter with you?”'

Men Dans menn sa til ham: «La ikke stemmen din høres blant oss, ellers kan noen vrede menn angripe deg, og du setter både ditt eget og dine familiemedlemmers liv i fare.»

The Danites said to him, 'Don’t raise your voice with us, or some bitter-tempered men might attack you, and you and your family could lose your lives.'

Så gikk Dans menn sin vei. Da Mika så at de var sterkere enn han, vendte han seg om og dro tilbake til sitt hus.

So the Danites continued on their way, and when Micah saw that they were stronger than he was, he turned and went back to his house.

De tok det som Mika hadde laget og presten han hadde, og gikk til Laish, til et rolig og trygt folk. De slo folket med sverdets egg og brente byen med ild.

The Danites took what Micah had made, along with his priest, and came to Laish, to a peaceful and unsuspecting people. They struck them down with the sword and burned the city with fire.

Det var ingen som kunne redde dem, for byen lå langt fra Sidon, og de hadde ingen forbindelser med andre mennesker. Byen lå i en dal som tilhørte Bet-Rehob. Dans menn bygde byen opp igjen og bosatte seg der.

There was no one to rescue the people of Laish because they were far from Sidon and had no alliances with anyone. The city was situated in a valley near Beth-rehob. The Danites rebuilt the city and settled there.

De ga byen navnet Dan, etter stamfaren sin, Dan, som var en av Israels sønner. Tidligere het byen Laish.

They named the city Dan, after their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel. However, the city had been named Laish previously.

Så satte Dans etterkommere opp den utskårne billedstøtten for seg selv. Jonathan, sønn av Gershom, sønn av Moses, og hans etterkommere var prester for Dans stamme inntil landet ble ført bort i fangenskap.

The Danites set up for themselves the carved image, and Jonathan, son of Gershom, the son of Moses, along with his sons, served as priests for the tribe of Dan until the time of the land’s captivity.

De beholdt Mikas utskårne billedstøtte som han hadde laget, hele den tiden Guds hus var i Silo.

They kept the carved image that Micah had made throughout the time the house of God was in Shiloh.
