På den tiden var det ingen konge i Israel. En levitt som bodde i de bortre delene av Efraims fjellområde, tok seg en medhustru fra Betlehem i Juda.

In those days, there was no king in Israel. There was a Levite living temporarily in the remote parts of the hill country of Ephraim, and he took a concubine for himself from Bethlehem in Judah.

Men medhustruen var utro mot ham og dro hjem til sin far i Betlehem i Juda. Der ble hun i fire måneder.

But his concubine was unfaithful to him and left him, going to her father’s house in Bethlehem in Judah. She stayed there for four months.

Hennes ektemann reiste etter henne for å overtale henne til å komme tilbake. Han tok med seg sin tjener og to esler. Da han kom til hennes fars hus i Betlehem, så faren til den unge kvinnen ham og hilste ham med glede.

Then her husband arose and went after her to speak kindly to her and bring her back. He took with him his servant and a pair of donkeys. When he arrived at her father’s house, the woman’s father saw him and was glad to welcome him.

Hans svigerfar, faren til den unge kvinnen, holdt ham tilbake, og han ble værende hos ham i tre dager. De spiste og drakk sammen og overnattet der.

His father-in-law, the woman’s father, persuaded him to stay, and he remained with him for three days. They ate, drank, and spent the nights there.

På den fjerde dagen sto de tidlig opp for å dra, men svigerfaren sa til sin svigersønn: «Styrk deg med litt mat først, og deretter kan dere dra.»

On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning to leave, but the woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh yourself with a piece of bread, and then you can go.”

Så satte de seg ned, spiste og drakk sammen. Faren til den unge kvinnen sa til mannen: «Bli over natten, og la hjertet ditt være glad.»

So they sat down and ate and drank together. Then the woman’s father said to the man, “Please agree to stay overnight, and let your heart be content.”

Da mannen reiste seg for å dra, ba svigerfaren ham så inntrengende at han ble værende og overnattet der igjen.

The man got up to leave, but his father-in-law urged him, so he stayed there another night.

På den femte dagen sto han opp tidlig for å dra, men faren til den unge kvinnen sa: «Styrk deg først, og vent til dagen heller mot kveld.» Så spiste de begge sammen.

On the fifth day, he got up early in the morning to leave, but the woman’s father said, “Please refresh yourself and wait until the day declines.” So the two of them ate together.

Da mannen og hans medhustru og tjener gjorde seg klare til å dra, sa svigerfaren, faren til den unge kvinnen: «Se, dagen heller mot kveld, bli over her i natt, og la hjertet ditt være glad. I morgen kan dere stå opp tidlig og dra hjem.»

When the man, his concubine, and his servant arose to leave, his father-in-law, the woman’s father, said to him, “Look, the day is drawing to a close. Stay here tonight; the day is almost over. Spend the night here, and let your heart be content. You can rise early tomorrow and continue on your way home.”

Men mannen ville ikke bli over natten. Han reiste seg, dro av sted og kom til et sted like ved Jebus, som nå er Jerusalem. Han hadde med seg to esler og sin medhustru som var med ham.

But the man was unwilling to stay the night. He got up and left, arriving near Jebus (that is, Jerusalem). He had with him a pair of saddled donkeys and his concubine.

Da de nærmet seg Jebus, og dagen var nesten over, sa tjeneren til sin herre: «La oss gå inn i denne jebusittbyen og overnatte der.»

When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Come, let us turn aside to this city of the Jebusites and stay the night there.”

Men herren svarte: «Vi skal ikke gå inn i en fremmed by som ikke tilhører israelittene. Vi drar videre til Gibea.»

But his master said to him, “We will not turn aside into a city of foreigners, who are not Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.”

Han sa til tjeneren: «Kom, la oss dra fremover, så kanskje vi når Gibea eller Rama og overnatter der.»

He said to his servant, "Come, let us approach one of these places and spend the night in Gibeah or Ramah."

Så dro de videre, og solen gikk ned da de nådde Gibea, som tilhører Benjamins stamme.

So they passed on and continued their journey. The sun set as they came near Gibeah, which belongs to the tribe of Benjamin.

De tok av mot Gibea for å overnatte der, og da de kom dit, satte de seg på torget i byen. Men ingen tok dem inn i huset sitt for å overnatte.

They turned aside there to go in and spend the night in Gibeah. When they went in, they sat in the town square, but no one took them into their house to spend the night.

Da kom en gammel mann fra sitt arbeid på marken om kvelden. Mannen var fra Efraims fjellområde, men bodde som fremmed i Gibea. Mennene i byen var benjaminitter.

In the evening, an old man came in from his work in the field. He was from the hill country of Ephraim and was staying temporarily in Gibeah, though the people of the place were Benjaminites.

Da den gamle mannen så den reisende på torget, spurte han: «Hvor skal du hen, og hvor kommer du fra?»

When he looked up and saw the traveler in the town square, the old man asked, "Where are you going, and where have you come from?"

Han svarte: «Vi er på vei fra Betlehem i Juda til de bortre delene av Efraims fjellområde, hvor jeg bor. Jeg har vært i Betlehem i Juda og er nå på vei til Herrens hus, men ingen har tatt meg inn i sitt hus.

The man answered, "We are traveling from Bethlehem in Judah to the remote parts of the hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah, and I am going to the house of the Lord, but no one has taken me into their home.

Vi har både halm og fôr til eslene våre, og også brød og vin til meg, din tjenestekvinne og den unge mannen som er med oss, dine tjenere. Vi mangler ingenting.»

We have straw and feed for our donkeys, as well as bread and wine for me, your servant, for the woman with me, and for the young man who is with your servants. We lack nothing."

Den gamle mannen sa: «Fred være med deg! La alt du trenger, være mitt ansvar. Men du må ikke overnatte på torget.»

The old man said, "Peace to you! Let me take care of all your needs, but do not spend the night in the square."

Han tok dem med til sitt hus og ga eslene fôr. De vasket føttene sine og spiste og drakk.

He brought him into his house and provided fodder for the donkeys. They washed their feet, ate, and drank.

Mens de ga seg til å være fornøyde, omringet byens menn, onde og uverdige, huset. De banket på døren og sa til den gamle mannen, husets eier: «Send ut mannen som kom til huset ditt, så vi kan kjenne ham.»

While they were enjoying themselves, some wicked men of the city surrounded the house. They pounded on the door and said to the old man, the owner of the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him."

Husets eier gikk ut til dem og sa: «Nei, brødre, gjør ikke noe ondt! Denne mannen har kommet til mitt hus. Gjør ikke en slik uverdig handling!

The owner of the house went out to them and said, "No, my brothers, do not commit such an evil act. Since this man has come into my house, do not do this disgraceful act.

Her er min datter som er jomfru, og hans medhustru. Jeg vil føre dem ut til dere. Gjør hva dere vil med dem, men gjør ikke denne mannen noe så ondt.»

Look, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. Let me bring them out to you now, and you may abuse them and do to them whatever you think best. But do not commit this disgraceful act against this man.

Men mennene ville ikke høre på ham. Så tok mannen sin medhustru og førte henne ut til dem. De misbrukte henne og voldtok henne hele natten til morgenen kom. Ved daggry lot de henne gå.

But the men refused to listen to him. So the man seized his concubine and brought her outside to them. They raped her and abused her throughout the night until morning, and at dawn, they let her go.

Kvinnen kom ved daggry til huset hvor hennes herre var, og falt sammen ved inngangen til huset og ble liggende til det ble lyst.

At daybreak, the woman came and fell at the doorway of the man's house where her master was staying, and she lay there until it was light.

Da hennes herre sto opp om morgenen, åpnet døren til huset og gikk ut for å dra videre. Der lå kvinnen, hans medhustru, sammenkrøpet ved inngangen til huset med hendene på dørterskelen.

Her master got up in the morning, opened the doors of the house, and went out to continue on his way. There was the woman, his concubine, lying at the doorway of the house with her hands on the threshold.

Han sa til henne: «Reis deg! La oss dra.» Men det kom ikke noe svar. Så løftet han henne opp på eselet sitt og dro hjem.

He said to her, "Get up, let us go." But there was no answer. So he put her on the donkey, and the man set out for home.

Da han kom hjem, tok han en kniv og skar opp medhustruen sin i tolv deler, i henhold til hennes bein, og sendte delene rundt til hele Israels område.

When he reached his house, he took a knife and cut up his concubine limb by limb into twelve pieces and sent them throughout the territory of Israel.

Alle som så det, sa: «Slikt har aldri skjedd eller vært sett fra den dagen Israel dro opp fra Egyptens land til i dag. Tenk på dette, rådslå, og ta avgjørelse!»

Everyone who saw it said, "Nothing like this has ever happened or been seen since the day the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt until now. Think it over, take counsel, and speak up!"
