The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, 'I brought you up from Egypt and led you to the land I swore to give to your ancestors. I said, I will never break my covenant with you forever.'

Og dere skal ikke lage noen pakt med innbyggerne i dette landet, men dere skal rive ned deres altere. Men dere har ikke lyttet til min røst. Hvorfor har dere gjort dette?

But you must not make a covenant with the people who live in this land. Instead, you are to break down their altars. Yet you have not obeyed me. What is this that you have done?'

Derfor sier jeg nå: Jeg vil ikke drive dem ut for dere, men de skal være som torner i sidene deres, og deres guder skal bli en snare for dere.»

So now I say, 'I will not drive them out before you. They will become thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.'

Og da Herrens engel talte disse ordene til hele Israels folk, løftet folket sin røst og gråt.

When the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly.

Og de kalte stedet Bokim, og der ofret de til Herren.

So they named that place Bochim, and there they offered sacrifices to the LORD.

Da Josva sendte folket bort, dro Israels barn hver til sin arv for å innta landet.

After Joshua sent the people away, the Israelites went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance.

Og folket tjente Herren hele Josvas dager og hele de eldste dagene, de som levde etter Josva og hadde sett alle de store gjerningene Herren hadde gjort for Israel.

The people served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the elders who outlived him and had seen all the great works the LORD had done for Israel.

Og Josva, Nuns sønn, Herrens tjener, døde, hundre og ti år gammel.

Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of one hundred and ten.

De begravde ham i grensen av hans arv i Timnat-Heres, på Efraims berg, nord for Ga’asj-fjellet.

And they buried him within the boundary of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Og hele den generasjonen ble samlet til sine fedre, og det vokste opp en annen generasjon etter dem som ikke kjente Herren og heller ikke det verk Herren hadde gjort for Israel.

After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD or the works he had done for Israel.

The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals.

They abandoned the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods, the gods of the peoples around them. They bowed down to them and provoked the LORD to anger.

De forlot Herren og tjente Baal og Astartene.

They abandoned the LORD and worshipped Baal and the Ashtaroth.

Og Herrens vrede ble opptent mot Israel, og han overgav dem i hendene på plundrerne, og de plundret dem. Og han solgte dem i hendene på deres fiender rundt omkring, slik at de ikke lenger kunne stå imot sine fiender.

The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and he gave them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, and they could no longer stand before their enemies.

Hvor de enn gikk, var Herrens hånd mot dem til ulykke, slik som Herren hadde talt og som Herren hadde sverget mot dem; og det var stor nød for dem.

Wherever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them to bring disaster on them, as the LORD had said and sworn to them. And they were in great distress.

Da reiste Herren opp dommere, og de frelste dem ut av hånden på dem som plyndret dem.

Then the LORD raised up judges who saved them from the hands of those who plundered them.

Men heller ikke til sine dommere hørte de, for de drev hor med andre guder og bøyde seg for dem. De vendte seg raskt bort fra den veien som deres fedre hadde vandret på, de som adlød Herrens bud; de handlet ikke slik.

Yet they did not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves by worshiping other gods. They turned quickly from the way their ancestors had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments. They did not do as their ancestors had done.

Når Herren reiste opp dommere for dem, var Herren med dommeren og frelste dem fra deres fienders hånd, så lenge dommeren levde. For Herren angret seg over deres klagerop på grunn av dem som undertrykte og plaget dem.

Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived. For the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed and afflicted them.

Men da dommeren døde, vendte de tilbake og var mer fordervet enn sine fedre ved å følge andre guder, tjene dem og bøye seg for dem. De la ikke av sine gjerninger og sin onde vei.

But when the judge died, they returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors, following other gods, serving them, and bowing down to them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.

Og Herrens vrede ble opptent mot Israel, og han sa: «Fordi dette folket har overtrådt min pakt, som jeg bød deres fedre, og ikke har adlydt min røst,

Therefore, the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and he said, 'Because this nation has violated the covenant I commanded their ancestors and has not listened to my voice,'

så vil heller ikke jeg lenger drive ut noen for dem fra de folkeslag Josva lot være igjen da han døde.»

'I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died.'

I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their ancestors did.

The LORD allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out immediately by giving them into Joshua’s hand.
