When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death.

They tied Him up, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pontius Pilate, the governor.

Then Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that Jesus was condemned. Feeling remorse, he returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders.

He said, 'I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.' But they replied, 'What is that to us? You take care of it.'

Then, throwing the silver pieces into the temple, he left. He went and hanged himself.

Øversteprestene tok sølvpengene og sa: 'Det er ikke lovlig å legge dem i tempelkisten, for det er blodpenger.'

The chief priests picked up the silver pieces and said, 'It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.'

Etter å ha rådført seg, brukte de pengene til å kjøpe Potterens mark som et sted for å begrave fremmede.

So they consulted together and used the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for strangers.

Derfor kalles den marken den dag i dag 'Blodmarken'.

For this reason, that field has been called 'The Field of Blood' to this day.

Meanwhile, Jesus stood before the governor. The governor questioned Him, saying, 'Are you the King of the Jews?' Jesus replied, 'You have said so.'

While He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer.

Da sa Pilatus til ham: 'Hører du ikke hvor mye de anklager deg for?'

Then Pilate said to Him, 'Do you not hear how many charges they bring against You?'

Men Jesus svarte ham ikke på noen av anklagene, og landshøvdingen ble svært forundret.

But Jesus did not answer even a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

Under høytiden pleide landshøvdingen å løslate en fange som folket ønsket.

Now at the festival, the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner, whom they wanted.

De hadde på den tiden en beryktet fange som het Barabbas.

At that time, they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.

Da folket var samlet, spurte Pilatus dem: 'Hvem vil dere at jeg skal løslate for dere? Barabbas eller Jesus, som kalles Messias?'

So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, 'Whom do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Christ?'

For han visste at det var av misunnelse de hadde overgitt ham.

He knew that it was out of envy that they had handed Him over.

While he was seated on the judgment seat, his wife sent a message to him, saying, 'Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered greatly today in a dream because of Him.'

But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death.

The governor asked them, 'Which of the two do you want me to release to you?' They answered, 'Barabbas.'

Pilate said to them, 'Then what should I do with Jesus, who is called the Christ?' They all said, 'Let Him be crucified!'

But he said, 'Why? What evil has He done?' Yet they kept shouting all the more, 'Let Him be crucified!'

When Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, 'I am innocent of this man's blood; see to it yourselves.'

And all the people answered, 'His blood be on us and on our children!'

Da løslot han Barabbas for dem, men lot Jesus bli pisket og overga ham til å bli korsfestet.

Then he released Barabbas to them; but after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Deretter tok landshøvdingens soldater med seg Jesus inn i guvernørens residens og samlet hele kohorten rundt ham.

Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the praetorium and gathered the whole cohort around Him.

De kledde ham av og la en skarlagensrød kappe rundt ham.

They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.

De flettet en krone av torner og satte den på hodet hans, og de la en stokk i høyre hånd. Så knelte de foran ham og hånet ham og sa: 'Vær hilset, jødenes konge!'

They twisted a crown of thorns and placed it on His head, and they put a staff in His right hand. Then they knelt before Him in mockery and said, 'Hail, King of the Jews!'

They spat on Him, took the staff, and struck Him on the head repeatedly.

After they had mocked Him, they took off the robe, put His own clothes back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

When they had crucified Him, they divided His garments among them, casting lots. This fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet: 'They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.'

Then they sat down and kept watch over Him there.

Over hodet hans satte de opp en anklage som lød: 'Dette er Jesus, jødenes konge.'

Above His head they placed the written charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Two robbers were crucified with Him, one on His right and the other on His left.

De som gikk forbi, spottet ham, ristet på hodet

Those who passed by were hurling insults at Him, shaking their heads and saying,

og sa: 'Du som bryter ned tempelet og bygger det opp igjen på tre dager, frels deg selv! Hvis du er Guds Sønn, stig ned fra korset!'

'You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!'

På samme måte hånte også øversteprestene ham, sammen med de skriftlærde og de eldste, og sa:

In the same way, the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked Him, saying,

'Han frelste andre, men seg selv kan han ikke frelse! Hvis han er Israels konge, la ham nå stige ned fra korset, så skal vi tro på ham.

'He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him.

Han har satt sin lit til Gud. La Gud redde ham nå, hvis han har behag i ham! Han har jo sagt: Jeg er Guds Sønn.'

'He trusts in God; let God deliver Him now, if He wants Him. For He said, "I am the Son of God."'

Også røverne som var korsfestet med ham, hånte ham på samme måte.

The robbers who were crucified with Him also heaped insults on Him in the same way.

Fra den sjette til den niende time kom det mørke over hele landet.

From noon until three in the afternoon, darkness came over all the land.

Og ved den niende time ropte Jesus med høy røst: 'Eli, Eli, lama sabaktani?' Det betyr: 'Min Gud, min Gud, hvorfor har du forlatt meg?'

About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, 'Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?' (which means, 'My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?').

When some of those standing there heard it, they said, 'He is calling Elijah.'

Straks løp en av dem frem, tok en svamp, fylte den med sur vin, satte den på en stokk og ga ham å drikke.

Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, placed it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.

Men resten sa: 'La oss se om Elia kommer for å redde ham.'

But the others said, 'Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.'

Da ropte Jesus igjen med høy røst og oppgav ånden.

Then Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit.

Og se, forhenget i tempelet revnet i to, fra øverst til nederst. Jorden skalv, og klippene revnet.

Suddenly, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.

Gravene åpnet seg, og mange legemer av de hellige som hadde sovnet inn, ble oppreist.

The tombs were opened, and many bodies of saints who had fallen asleep were raised.

After His resurrection, they came out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many people.

When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified and said, 'Truly this was the Son of God!'

Many women were there watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving Him.

Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

When evening had come, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who had also become a disciple of Jesus, arrived.

He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be handed over to him.

Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

and placed it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. He rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

Neste dag, som var dagen etter forberedelsesdagen, samlet overprestene og fariseerne seg hos Pilatus.

The next day, which followed the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate.

De sa: 'Herre, vi husker at denne bedrageren sa mens han levde: Etter tre dager skal jeg reise meg opp.

They said, 'Sir, we remember that while He was still alive, that deceiver said, "After three days I will rise again."'

Gi derfor befaling om at graven blir sikret til den tredje dag, for at ikke disiplene hans skal komme og stjele ham og si til folket: Han er stått opp fra de døde. Da vil den siste bedrageri være verre enn det første.'

'So order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, or else His disciples may come and steal Him away, and tell the people, "He has been raised from the dead." This last deception would be worse than the first.'

Pilatus sa til dem: 'Dere har en vaktstyrke. Gå og sikr graven så godt dere kan.'

Pilate said to them, 'You have a guard of soldiers; go and make the tomb as secure as you know how.'

Så gikk de av sted og sikret graven ved å forsegle steinen og sette vakten der.

So they went and secured the tomb by sealing the stone and posting the guard.
