Then the entire assembly raised their voices and cried, and the people wept throughout that night.

Og Israels barn klaget mot Moses og Aron. Hele menigheten sa til dem: «Om vi bare hadde dødd i Egypt eller i denne ørkenen!»

All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole community said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt or in this wilderness!

Hvorfor fører Herren oss inn i dette landet for å dø ved sverdet, for at våre kvinner og barn skal bli til bytte? Vil det ikke være bedre for oss å vende tilbake til Egypt?

Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to return to Egypt?

Og de sa til hverandre: «La oss velge en leder og vende tilbake til Egypt.»

And they said to each other, "Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.

Da falt Moses og Aron på sitt ansikt foran hele menigheten av Israels barn.

Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown before the entire assembly of the Israelite community.

Josva, Nuns sønn, og Kaleb, Jefunnes sønn, som var blant dem som hadde speidet ut landet, rev klærne sine.

Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes.

De sa til hele menigheten av Israels barn: «Det landet vi dro gjennom og speidet ut, er et meget godt land.»

And they said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.

Hvis Herren har behag i oss, vil han føre oss inn i dette landet og gi det til oss, et land som flyter av melk og honning.

If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us—a land flowing with milk and honey.

Bare gjør ikke opprør mot Herren, og frykt ikke folket i landet, for de skal bli som brød for oss. Deres beskyttelse har veket fra dem, og Herren er med oss. Frykt dem ikke!

Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not be afraid of the people of the land, for we will devour them. Their protection is gone, and the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them.

Men hele menigheten truet med å steine dem. Da viste Herrens herlighet seg over møteteltet for alle Israels barn.

But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites.

Og Herren sa til Moses: «Hvor lenge vil dette folket forakte meg? Hvor lenge vil de nekte å tro på meg, til tross for alle de tegn jeg har gjort blant dem?»

The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, despite all the signs I have performed among them?

«Jeg vil slå dem med pest og utslette dem, og jeg vil gjøre deg til et større og mektigere folk enn dem.»

I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, and I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.

Men Moses sa til Herren: «Da vil egypterne høre det, for med din kraft førte du dette folket opp fra dem.»

But Moses said to the LORD, "The Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.

«Og de vil si til innbyggerne i dette landet: ‘De har hørt at du, Herren, er blant dette folket, at du, Herren, viser deg for dem ansikt til ansikt, at din sky står over dem, og at du går foran dem i en skystøtte om dagen og en ildstøtte om natten.’»

They will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, LORD, are among these people, that you, LORD, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.

«Hvis du nå dreper hele dette folket som en mann, vil folkene som har hørt om ditt navn, si:

If you put all these people to death as one man, the nations who have heard about your fame will say,

‘Herren kunne ikke føre dette folket inn i det landet han hadde sverget å gi dem, så han drepte dem i ørkenen.’»

'The LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath, so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.'

«La nå, Herren, din kraft bli stor, slik du har sagt:

Now may the Lord's strength be displayed, just as you have declared:

‘Herren er langmodig og rik på miskunn. Han tilgir skyld og opprør, men han lar den skyldige ikke slippe straff. Han hjemsøker fedres skyld på barn til tredje og fjerde ledd.’»

'The LORD is slow to anger, abundant in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and rebellion; yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers' iniquity upon the children to the third and fourth generation.'

«Tilgi derfor dette folkets skyld etter din store miskunn, slik du har tilgitt dette folket fra Egypt og til nå.»

Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven them from Egypt until now.

Og Herren sa: «Jeg har tilgitt etter ditt ord.»

The LORD replied, 'I have forgiven them, as you asked.'

Men, så sant jeg lever, og så sant Herrens herlighet fyller hele jorden:

Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth,

Alle de mennene som har sett min herlighet og de tegn jeg gjorde i Egypt og i ørkenen, men likevel har satt meg på prøve ti ganger og ikke har hørt på min røst,

none of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times,

not one of them will see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has spurned me will see it.

But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and has followed me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.

The Amalekites and Canaanites are dwelling in the valley. Tomorrow, turn around and set out toward the wilderness along the way of the Red Sea.

Og Herren talte til Moses og Aron og sa:

Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:

«Hvor lenge skal denne onde menigheten klage mot meg? Jeg har hørt Israels barns klager som de klager mot meg.

How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of the Israelites, who are murmuring against me.

Si til dem: ‘Så sant jeg lever,’ sier Herren, ‘slik jeg har hørt dere si, slik skal jeg gjøre mot dere.’

Say to them: 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you exactly as I heard you say in my hearing.'

Deres døde kropper skal falle i denne ørkenen, alle dere som ble talt opp, så mange som var tjue år eller eldre da dere klaget mot meg.

In this wilderness, your dead bodies will fall—every one of you who was numbered in the census, twenty years old or more, who grumbled against me.

Ingen av dere skal komme inn i det landet jeg med løfte løftet min hånd for å gi dere, unntatt Kaleb, Jefunnes sønn, og Josva, Nuns sønn.

Not one of you will enter the land I swore by uplifted hand to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

But your children, whom you said would be plunder, I will bring them in to know the land that you have rejected.

As for you, your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness.

Og deres barn skal være gjetere i ørkenen i førti år og bære straffen for deres troløshet, til deres døde kropper i ørkenen er borte.

Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, bearing the consequences of your unfaithfulness, until your corpses are consumed in the wilderness.

For forty days you explored the land; now, for each day, you will bear your guilt for a year—forty years—and you will know my opposition.

I, the LORD, have spoken. I will surely do this to this entire wicked community who conspired against me; they will meet their end in this wilderness, and here they will die.

The men whom Moses had sent to explore the land, and who returned and caused the whole assembly to complain by spreading a bad report about the land—

those men who spread the bad report about the land were struck down by a plague before the LORD.

Men Josva, Nuns sønn, og Kaleb, Jefunnes sønn, overlevde blant de som hadde vært for å speide ut landet.

But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, survived.

Da Moses fortalte dette til alle Israels barn, sørget folket dypt.

When Moses relayed these words to all the Israelites, the people mourned greatly.

Neste morgen sto de tidlig opp og gikk opp til fjelltoppen og sa: «Her er vi! Vi vil gå opp til det stedet som Herren har lovet, for vi har syndet.»

Early the next morning they set out toward the top of the hill and said, 'Here we are! We are ready to go up to the place the LORD promised, for we have sinned.'

Men Moses sa: «Hvorfor overtrer dere Herrens ord? Dette vil ikke lykkes.

But Moses said, 'Why are you disobeying the LORD's command? This will not succeed.

Gå ikke opp, for Herren er ikke med dere, så dere ikke blir slått av deres fiender.

Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you; you will be defeated by your enemies.'

For amalekittene og kanaaneerne er foran dere, og dere vil falle for sverdet. Fordi dere har vendt dere bort fra Herren, vil ikke Herren være med dere.»

For the Amalekites and Canaanites are there to confront you, and you will fall by the sword. Because you have turned away from the LORD, He will not be with you.

Likevel var de frekke nok til å gå opp til fjelltoppen, men Herrens paktsark og Moses forlot ikke leiren.

Nevertheless, in their presumption, they went up toward the top of the hill, but neither the ark of the LORD's covenant nor Moses moved from the camp.

Da kom amalekittene og kanaaneerne som bodde på det fjellet ned, slo dem og spredte dem helt til Horma.

Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down, attacked them, and routed them as far as Hormah.
