Hva skal vi da si at Abraham, vår far etter kjødet, har oppnådd?

What then shall we say about Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh?

For hvis Abraham ble rettferdiggjort av gjerninger, har han noe å rose seg av, men ikke for Gud.

For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about—but not before God.

For hva sier Skriften? Abraham trodde Gud, og det ble regnet ham til rettferdighet.

What does the Scripture say? 'Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.'

Men den som arbeider, hans lønn regnes ikke som nåde, men som fortjent lønn.

Now to the one who works, wages are not counted as a gift but as an obligation.

Og den som ikke arbeider, men tror på ham som rettferdiggjør den ugudelige, hans tro regnes ham til rettferdighet.

But to the one who does not work but believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.

Slik sier også David om den velsignelse som tilkommer mennesket som Gud tilregner rettferdighet uten gjerninger:

Just as David also speaks of the blessedness of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

«Salige er de hvis overtredelser er forlatt og hvis synder er skjult.

Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven and whose sins are covered.

Salig er den mann som Herren ikke tilregner synd.»

Blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count sin.

Denne velsignelsen er da for de omskårne, eller også for de uomskårne? For vi sier: Troen ble regnet Abraham til rettferdighet.

Is this blessedness then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.

Hvordan ble den da tilregnet? Var det etter omskjæringen eller før omskjæringen? Ikke i omskjæringen, men før omskjæringen.

How then was it credited? Was it while he was circumcised or uncircumcised? It was not while he was circumcised, but while he was uncircumcised.

Han fikk tegnet av omskjæringen som et segl på rettferdigheten av troen som han hadde før omskjæringen, for å være far til alle som tror, selv om de ikke er omskåret, så rettferdigheten også kan tilregnes dem.

And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness might also be credited to them,

and to be the father of the circumcised who are not only circumcised but also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

For løftet til Abraham eller hans ætt at han skulle være verdens arving, var ikke gjennom loven, men gjennom troens rettferdighet.

For the promise to Abraham or his descendants that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

For hvis de av loven er arvinger, er troen blitt gjøringsløs og løftet til intet.

For if those who are of the law inherit, faith is made void, and the promise is nullified.

For loven virker vrede; men der det ikke er lov, er det heller ikke overtredelse.

For the law brings wrath, and where there is no law, there is no transgression.

Derfor er det av troen, for at det skulle være av nåde, så løftet kan være fast for hele ætten, ikke bare for den som er av loven, men også for den av troen til Abraham, som er far til oss alle.

Therefore, the promise comes by faith, that it may be according to grace, so that it might be guaranteed to all the offspring—not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

Som det er skrevet: «Jeg har satt deg som far til mange folkeslag», for Gud, han som Abraham trodde, som gjør de døde levende og kaller de ting som ikke er, som om de var.

As it is written: 'I have made you a father of many nations.' He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.

Mot håp trodde han med håp, for at han skulle bli far til mange folkeslag, etter det som var sagt: «Så skal din ætt være.»

Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, 'So shall your offspring be.'

Og ikke sviktet han i troen da han betraktet sitt eget kropp som allerede var utdødd - han var omkring hundre år gammel - og Saras morslivs død.

And without weakening in faith, he did not consider his own body, which was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—or the deadness of Sarah’s womb.

He did not waver in unbelief concerning the promise of God, but he was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,

being fully convinced that God was able to do what He had promised.

Derfor ble det regnet ham til rettferdighet.

Therefore, it was credited to him as righteousness.

Men det ble ikke skrevet bare for hans skyld at det ble ham tilregnet,

Now the words 'it was credited to him' were not written for his sake alone,

men også for vår skyld, de som det skal tilregnes, vi som tror på ham som oppreiste vår Herre Jesus fra de døde.

but also for us, to whom it will be credited—to those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

Han som ble overgitt for våre overtredelser og oppreist for vår rettferdiggjørelse.

He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
