In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Kislev.

Da sendte Betel Sharezer og Regem-Melek og hans menn for å be for Herrens ansikt,

The people of Bethel sent Sharezer, Regem-melech, and their men to seek the favor of the LORD.

og de spurte prestene som var i Herrens, hærskarenes Guds hus, og profetene: 'Skal jeg fortsette å gråte i den femte måneden, slik jeg har gjort i så mange år?'

They asked the priests of the house of the LORD of Hosts and the prophets, 'Should I weep in the fifth month and abstain, as I have done for so many years?'

Da kom Herrens, hærskarenes Guds ord til meg, og sa:

Then the word of the LORD of Hosts came to me, saying:

Si til hele folket i landet og til prestene: 'Når dere har fastet og sørget i den femte og i den sjuende måneden gjennom disse sytti årene, var det virkelig for meg dere fastet?'

Say to all the people of the land and the priests: 'When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for these seventy years, did you really fast for me?'

Når dere spiste og drakk, var det ikke for dere selv dere spiste og drakk?

And when you eat and when you drink, aren’t you eating and drinking for yourselves?

Var det ikke de samme ord som Herren, hærskarenes Gud, talte ved profetene da Jerusalem var bebodd og i velstand, og byene omkring den og Negev og lavlandet var bebodd?

Are these not the words the LORD proclaimed through the earlier prophets when Jerusalem was inhabited and prosperous, along with its surrounding cities, and when the Negev and the Shephelah were also peopled?

Herrens ord kom igjen til Sakarja, og sa:

Then the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying:

Så sier Herrens, hærskarenes Gud: 'Døm rettferdig og vis hverandre kjærlighet og barmhjertighet.'

Thus says the LORD of Hosts: 'Administer true justice. Show kindness and compassion to one another.

Undertrykk ikke enker, foreldreløse, fremmede eller fattige, og planlegg ikke ondt mot hverandre i deres hjerter.

Do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil in your hearts against one another.'

Men de nektet å høre og vendte en skulder til i trass, og de gjorde sine ører tunge for å ikke høre.

But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder. They stopped their ears so they would not hear.

De gjorde sitt hjerte hardt som flint for å ikke høre loven og ordene som Herren, hærskarenes Gud, hadde sendt ved sin Ånd gjennom de tidligere profetene. Derfor kom det stor vrede fra Herren, hærskarenes Gud.

They made their hearts as hard as flint, refusing to hear the law and the words that the LORD of Hosts had sent by His Spirit through the earlier prophets. Therefore, great wrath came from the LORD of Hosts.

Det skjedde som de ikke hørte da han ropte, og så når de roper, vil jeg ikke høre, sier Herrens, hærskarenes Gud.

'Just as I called, and they did not listen, so when they call, I will not listen,' says the LORD of Hosts.

Jeg spredte dem blant alle de folkene de ikke kjente, og landet ble øde etter dem, så ingen kom og gikk. Dette gjorde de det kjente, frodige landet til en ørken.

'I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations that they had not known. The land was left so desolate behind them that no one could come or go. This is how they made the pleasant land a wasteland.'
