Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

Filisterne fulgte tett etter Saul og hans sønner, og de drepte Jonatan, Abinadab og Malki-Sjua, Sauls sønner.

And the Philistines followed hard after Saul and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.

Kampen ble hard mot Saul, og bueskytterne tok ham igjen, og han ble presset på grunn av bueskytterne.

And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was distressed by reason of the archers.

Da sa Saul til våpenbæreren sin: «Trekk ditt sverd og stikk meg ihjel, så ikke disse uomskårne kommer og mishandler meg.» Men våpenbæreren ville ikke, for han var svært redd. Derfor tok Saul sverdet sitt og kastet seg på det.

Then said Saul unto his armor-bearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armor-bearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.

Da våpenbæreren hans så at Saul var død, kastet også han seg på sitt sverd og døde.

And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword, and died.

Så døde Saul og hans tre sønner, og hele hans hus døde sammen.

So Saul died, and his three sons; and all his house died together.

Da alle Israels menn som var i dalen, så at de hadde flyktet, og at Saul og hans sønner var døde, forlot de byene sine og flyktet. Så kom filisterne og bosatte seg der.

And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

Neste dag, da filisterne kom for å plyndre de døde, fant de Saul og hans sønner på Gilboafjellet.

And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa.

De plyndret ham, tok hodet hans og rustningen, og sendte bud om det rundt i filisternes land for å kunngjøre det til sine avguder og til folket.

And they stripped him, and took his head, and his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry the tidings unto their idols, and to the people.

De plasserte rustningen hans i huset til gudene sine, og festet hodet i Dagons hus.

And they put his armor in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the house of Dagon.

Da alle i Jabesj-Gilead hørte hva filistrene hadde gjort med Saul,

And when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

sto alle de tapre mennene opp, tok bort Sauls kropp og kroppene til hans sønner, brakte dem til Jabesj, og begravde deres ben under eika i Jabesj, og fastet i syv dager.

all the valiant men arose, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

Saul døde fordi han hadde vært troløs mot Herren og ikke hadde holdt Herrens ord; han hadde også rådført seg med en åndemaner for å få veiledning,

So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against Jehovah, because of the word of Jehovah, which he kept not; and also for that he asked counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire `thereby',

og ikke spurt Herren. Derfor lot han ham dø, og overlot riket til David, sønn av Isai.

and inquired not of Jehovah: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.
