Nå var David gammel og mett av dager; og han gjorde Salomo, sin sønn, til konge over Israel.

Now David was old and full of days; and he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

Og han samlet alle Israels fyrster, sammen med prestene og levittene.

And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.

Levittene ble telt fra tretti år og oppover: og tallet på dem, mann for mann, var trettiåtte tusen.

And the Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand.

Av disse skulle tjuefire tusen ha tilsyn med arbeidet i Herrens hus; og seks tusen var embetsmenn og dommere.

Of these, twenty and four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of Jehovah; and six thousand were officers and judges;

Fire tusen var dørvoktere; og fire tusen priste Herren med de instrumentene som jeg laget, sa David, til å prise med.

and four thousand were doorkeepers; and four thousand praised Jehovah with the instruments which I made, `said David', to praise therewith.

Og David delte dem inn i avdelinger etter Levis sønner: Gershon, Kehat og Merari.

And David divided them into courses according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Of the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.

Sønnene til Ladan: Jehiel, den fremste, og Zetam og Joel, tre i tallet.

The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the chief, and Zetham, and Joel, three.

Sønnene til Sjimi: Selomot, Hasiel, og Haran, tre i tallet. Disse var overhodene for Ladan-familiens hus.

The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers' `houses' of Ladan.

And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.

And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they became a fathers' house in one reckoning.

Sønnene til Kehat: Amram, Jishar, Hebron og Ussiel, fire i tallet.

The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.

Sønnene til Amram: Aron og Moses; og Aron ble utvalgt til å hellige de aller helligste ting, han og hans sønner, for alltid, for å brenne røkelse for Herren, for å tjene ham og velsigne i hans navn, for evig.

The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses; and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons, for ever, to burn incense before Jehovah, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, for ever.

Men Moses, Guds mann, hans sønner ble regnet blant Levis stamme.

But as for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.

Sønnene til Moses: Gersjom og Eliezer.

The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.

Sønnene til Gersjom: Sjebuel, den fremste.

The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the chief.

Og sønnene til Eliezer var: rehabia den fremste; og Eliezer hadde ingen andre sønner; men rehabias sønner var svært mange.

And the sons of Eliezer were: Rehabiah the chief; and Eliezer had no other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.

Sønnene til Jishar: Selomit, den fremste.

The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the chief.

Sønnene til Hebron: Jeria, den fremste, Amarja, den andre, Jahaziel, den tredje, og Jekameam, den fjerde.

The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

Sønnene til Ussiel: Mika, den fremste, og Issia, den andre.

The sons of Uzziel: Micah the chief, and Isshiah the second.

Sønnene til Merari: Mahli og Musji. Sønnene til Mahli: Eleasar og Kisj.

The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.

Og Eleasar døde, og hadde ingen sønner, kun døtre; og deres brødre, sønnene til Kisj, tok dem til koner.

And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters only: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them `to wife'.

Sønnene til Musji: Mahli, Eder, og Jeremot, tre i tallet.

The sons of Mushi: Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

Dette var Levis sønner etter deres fedrehus, til og med overhodene for fedrehusene som ble telt etter navn, mann for mann, fra tjue år og oppover som gjorde tjeneste i Herrens hus.

These were the sons of Levi after their fathers' houses, even the heads of the fathers' `houses' of those of them that were counted, in the number of names by their polls, who did the work for the service of the house of Jehovah, from twenty years old and upward.

For David sa: Herren, Israels Gud, har gitt hvile til sitt folk; og han bor i Jerusalem for alltid.

For David said, Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath given rest unto his people; and he dwelleth in Jerusalem for ever:

Og levittene skal ikke lenger behøve å bære tabernaklet og alle dets kar for tjenesten der.

and also the Levites shall no more have need to carry the tabernacle and all the vessels of it for the service thereof.

For etter Davids siste befalinger ble Levis sønner telt fra tjue år og oppover.

For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered, from twenty years old and upward.

Deres oppgave var å bistå Arons sønner i tjenesten for Herrens hus, i forgårdene, og i kamrene, og i renselsen av alle hellige ting, ja, arbeidet med tjenesten i Guds hus.

For their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of Jehovah, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of the house of God;

Også for skuebrødene, og for det fine melet til matofferet, enten usyrede kaker eller det som bakes i pannen eller det som stekes, og for alle slags mål og størrelser.

for the showbread also, and for the fine flour for a meal-offering, whether of unleavened wafers, or of that which is baked in the pan, or of that which is soaked, and for all manner of measure and size;

Og å stå hver morgen for å takke og prise Herren, og på samme måte om kvelden.

and to stand every morning to thank and praise Jehovah, and likewise at even;

Og å bringe alle brennoffer til Herren, på sabbatene, på nymånedagene, og på de fastsatte festene, etter antallet som er fastsatt for dem, stadig for Herren.

and to offer all burnt-offerings unto Jehovah, on the sabbaths, on the new moons, and on the set feasts, in number according to the ordinance concerning them, continually before Jehovah;

Og de skulle ta vare på ansvaret for møteteltet, og ansvaret for det hellige stedet, og ansvaret for Arons sønner deres brødre, for tjenesten i Herrens hus.

and that they should keep the charge of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, for the service of the house of Jehovah.
