And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of Jehovah, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.

Men folket ofret på haugene, for det var ennå ikke bygget et hus for Herrens navn i de dager.

Only the people sacrificed in the high places, because there was no house built for the name of Jehovah until those days.

Salomo elsket Herren, og fulgte sin far Davids forskrifter, men han ofret og brente røkelse på haugene.

And Solomon loved Jehovah, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

Kongen dro til Gibeon for å ofre der, for det var et stort høyt sted; Salomo ofret tusen brennoffer på det alteret.

And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt-offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.

I Gibeon viste Herren seg for Salomo i en drøm om natten, og Gud sa: Be om hva jeg skal gi deg.

In Gibeon Jehovah appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.

Salomo svarte: Du har vist stor godhet mot din tjener David, min far, fordi han vandret for ditt åsyn i sannhet, rettferdighet og ærbarhet i hjertet med deg; og du har bevart denne store godheten mot ham, at du har gitt ham en sønn som kan sitte på hans trone, slik som i dag.

And Solomon said, Thou hast showed unto thy servant David my father great lovingkindness, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great lovingkindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

Og nå, Herre min Gud, du har satt din tjener til konge etter min far David, men jeg er bare et lite barn; jeg vet ikke hvordan jeg skal gå ut eller komme inn.

And now, O Jehovah my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child; I know not how to go out or come in.

Og din tjener er midt iblant ditt folk som du har utvalgt, et stort folk som ikke kan telles eller regnes på grunn av deres mengde.

And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.

Gi derfor din tjener et lydhørt hjerte til å dømme ditt folk og skille mellom godt og ondt; for hvem er i stand til å dømme dette ditt store folk?

Give thy servant therefore an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this thy great people?

Og talen behaget Herren, at Salomo hadde bedt om dette.

And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

Gud sa til ham: Fordi du har bedt om dette, og ikke bedt om langt liv for deg selv, heller ikke rikdom for deg selv, heller ikke livet til dine fiender, men har bedt om forstand til å skjelne rettferdighet;

And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life, neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies, but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern justice;

se, jeg har gjort i henhold til ditt ord: Jeg har gitt deg et vist og forstående hjerte, slik at ingen har vært som deg før, og ingen vil komme etter deg som deg.

behold, I have done according to thy word: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there hath been none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

Og jeg har også gitt deg det du ikke ba om, både rikdom og ære, så det ikke skal være noen blant kongene lik deg i alle dine dager.

And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee, all thy days.

Og hvis du vil vandre på mine veier, holde mine forskrifter og mine bud, som din far David gjorde, vil jeg forlenge dine dager.

And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.

Salomo våknet, og se, det var en drøm. Han kom til Jerusalem, sto foran Herrens paktskiste, ofret brennoffer og fredsoffer, og holdt en fest for alle sine tjenere.

And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream: and he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and offered up burnt-offerings, and offered peace-offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.

Da kom to kvinner, som var prostituerte, til kongen og sto foran ham.

Then there came two women that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.

Den ene kvinnen sa: Å, herre, jeg og denne kvinnen bor i samme hus, og jeg fødte et barn hos henne i huset.

And the one woman said, Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.

Og det skjedde på den tredje dagen etter at jeg fødte, at denne kvinnen også fødte; og vi var sammen, det var ingen fremmed sammen med oss i huset, bare vi to i huset.

And it came to pass the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also; and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.

Og denne kvinnens barn døde om natten fordi hun lå på det.

And this woman's child died in the night, because she lay upon it.

Så sto hun opp ved midnatt og tok min sønn fra siden av meg mens din tjenerinne sov, og la ham i sitt fang, og la sitt døde barn i mitt fang.

And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thy handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.

Da jeg stod opp om morgenen for å amme mitt barn, se, det var dødt; men når jeg så nærmere på det om morgenen, se, det var ikke min sønn, som jeg hadde født.

And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead; but when I had looked at it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, whom I did bear.

Den andre kvinnen sa: Nei, det levende barnet er min sønn, og det døde er din. Men denne sa: Nei, det døde er din sønn, og det levende er min. Slik talte de foran kongen.

And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.

Da sa kongen: Den ene sier: Dette er min sønn som lever, og din sønn er den døde, og den andre sier: Nei, men din sønn er den døde, og min sønn er den levende.

Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.

Og kongen sa: Bring meg et sverd. Så brakte de et sverd til kongen.

And the king said, Fetch me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.

Og kongen sa: Del det levende barnet i to, og gi halvparten til den ene og halvparten til den andre.

And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.

Da talte kvinnen hvis sønn som var i live til kongen, for hennes hjerte brant for hennes sønn, og hun sa: Å, herre, gi henne det levende barnet, og slå det ikke i hjel. Men den andre sa: Det skal verken være mitt eller ditt; del det.

Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, It shall be neither mine nor thine; divide it.

Da svarte kongen og sa: Gi henne det levende barnet, og slå det ikke i hjel; hun er barnets mor.

Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.

Og hele Israel hørte om dommen som kongen hadde avsagt, og de fryktet kongen, for de så at Guds visdom var i ham til å utføre rettferdighet.

And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.
