Rehabeam dro til Sikem, for hele Israel hadde kommet til Sikem for å gjøre ham til konge.

And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

Da Jeroboam, sønn av Nebat, hørte om dette (for han var i Egypt, hvor han hadde flyktet fra kong Salomo), vendte han tilbake fra Egypt.

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it, (for he was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon,) that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

De sendte og kalte på ham, og Jeroboam og hele Israel kom og talte til Rehabeam og sa:

And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spake to Rehoboam, saying,

Din far gjorde vårt åk tungt. Nå ber vi deg å gjøre det harde arbeidet som din far la på oss lettere, så skal vi tjene deg.

Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

Han sa til dem: Kom tilbake til meg om tre dager. Og folket dro bort.

And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.

Kong Rehabeam rådførte seg med de gamle mennene som hadde stått for Salomo, hans far, mens han levde, og sa: Hvilket råd gir dere meg for å svare dette folket?

And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?

De svarte ham: Om du er god mot dette folket og behager dem og taler vennlige ord til dem, vil de bli dine tjenere for alltid.

And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

Men han forkastet de gamles råd som de hadde gitt ham, og rådførte seg med de unge mennene som hadde vokst opp med ham og stod foran ham.

But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men that were grown up with him, that stood before him.

Han sa til dem: Hvilket råd gir dere, slik at vi kan svare dette folket som har sagt til meg: Gjør det åket som din far la på oss lettere?

And he said unto them, What counsel give ye, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke that thy father did put upon us lighter?

De unge mennene som hadde vokst opp med ham, sa til ham: Dette skal du si til folket som sa til deg: Din far gjorde vårt åk tungt, men nå gjør det lettere for oss; slik skal du svare dem: Min lillefinger er tykkere enn min fars hofter.

And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou say unto the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.

Nå, når min far la et tungt åk på dere, vil jeg legge enda mer til: Min far straffet dere med pisker, men jeg vil straffe dere med skorpioner.

And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I `will chastise you' with scorpions.

Jeroboam og hele folket kom til Rehabeam den tredje dagen, som kongen hadde sagt: Kom tilbake til meg den tredje dagen.

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come to me again the third day.

Kongen svarte dem hardt, og kong Rehabeam forkastet de gamles råd.

And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,

Han svarte dem etter rådet fra de unge mennene og sa: Min far gjorde deres åk tungt, men jeg vil legge mer til: Min far straffet dere med pisker, men jeg vil straffe dere med skorpioner.

and spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I `will chastise you' with scorpions.

Så kongen lyttet ikke til folket, for Gud hadde forårsaket det, slik at Herren skulle oppfylle sitt ord, som han hadde talt ved Ahia fra Sjilo til Jeroboam, sønn av Nebat.

So the king hearkened not unto the people; for it was brought about of God, that Jehovah might establish his word, which he spake by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

Da hele Israel så at kongen ikke lyttet til dem, svarte folket kongen og sa: Hva del har vi i David? Vi har ingen arv i Isais sønn. Hver mann til sine telt, Israel! Se nå til ditt eget hus, David. Så dro hele Israel til sine telt.

And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So all Israel departed unto their tents.

Men over Israels barn som bodde i Judas byer, hersket Rehabeam.

But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

Da sendte kong Rehabeam Hadoram, som var over dem som var under arbeidstvang, og Israels barn steinet ham til døde med steiner. Kong Rehabeam skyndte seg opp i sin vogn for å flykte til Jerusalem.

Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to taskwork; and the children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. And king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

Så gjorde Israel opprør mot Davids hus til denne dag.

So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
