Da David var kommet litt forbi toppen av høyden, kom Ziba, Mephiboshets tjener, imot ham med et par esler salet, lastet med to hundre brød, hundre klaser rosiner, hundre sommerfrukter og en krukke vin.

And when David was a little past the top `of the ascent', behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and a hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine.

Kongen spurte Ziba: Hva vil du med dette? Ziba svarte: Eslene er til kongens hus å ride på, brødet og sommerfruktene er til de unge mennene å spise, og vinen er til den som er utmattet i ørkenen, så de kan drikke.

And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses are for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink.

Kongen spurte: Hvor er din herres sønn? Ziba svarte kongen: Han er blitt i Jerusalem, for han sa: I dag vil Israels hus gi meg tilbake min fars rike.

And the king said, And where is thy master's son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem; for he said, To-day will the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.

Da sa kongen til Ziba: Alt som tilhører Mephiboshet, er ditt. Og Ziba sa: Jeg bøyer meg, la meg finne nåde for dine øyne, min herre kongen.

Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine is all that pertaineth unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I do obeisance; let me find favor in thy sight, my lord, O king.

Da kong David kom til Bahurim, kom en mann fra Sauls slektshus ut derfra. Han hette Sjime'i, sønn av Gera. Han kom ut og forbannet mens han gikk.

And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came out, and cursed still as he came.

Han kastet steiner mot David og alle kongens tjenere, og hele folket og alle de mektige mennene var på hans høyre og venstre side.

And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

Slik sa Sjime'i da han forbannet: Dra bort, dra bort, du blodige mann, du usle menneske!

And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and base fellow:

Herren har latt all Sauls blods skyld komme over deg, han som du har hersket over. Herren har gitt riket i din sønn Absaloms hånd, og se, nå er du fanget i din egen ondskap, for du er en blodig mann.

Jehovah hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and Jehovah hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son; and, behold, thou art `taken' in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.

Da sa Abisjai, Serujas sønn, til kongen: Hvorfor skal denne døde hunden få forbande min herre, kongen? La meg gå over og hogge hodet av ham.

Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.

Men kongen sa: Hva har jeg med dere å gjøre, dere Serujas sønner? La ham bare forbanne, for dersom Herren har sagt til ham: Forbann David, hvem kan da si: Hvorfor har du gjort så?

And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? Because he curseth, and because Jehovah hath said unto him, Curse David; who then shall say, Wherefore hast thou done so?

David sa til Abisjai og til alle sine tjenere: Se, min egen sønn som er kommet fra min kropp, søker mitt liv. Hvor mye mer vil ikke denne benjaminitten gjøre det! La ham være, og la ham forbanne, for Herren har befalt ham det.

And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, who came forth from my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more `may' this Benjamite now `do it'? let him alone, and let him curse; for Jehovah hath bidden him.

Kanskje Herren vil se på det urett som er gjort mot meg, og kanskje Herren vil gjøre godt igjen for hans forbannelse i dag.

It may be that Jehovah will look on the wrong done unto me, and that Jehovah will requite me good for `his' cursing of me this day.

Så gikk David og hans menn videre på veien, mens Sjime'i gikk langs fjellskråningen motsatt dem, og forbannet mens han gikk, og kastet steiner og støv mot ham.

So David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill-side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.

Kongen og alle folkene som var med ham, kom trette fram, og han styrket seg der.

And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary; and he refreshed himself there.

Absalom og alle folket, Israels menn, kom til Jerusalem, og Ahitofel var med ham.

And Absalom, and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him.

Hushai, arkitten, Davids venn, kom til Absalom og sa til ham: Leve kongen! Leve kongen!

And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom, `Long' live the king, `Long' live the king.

Absalom spurte Hushai: Er dette din troskap mot din venn? Hvorfor dro du ikke med din venn?

And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?

Hushai svarte Absalom: Nei, men hvem Herren og dette folket og alle Israels menn har valgt, vil jeg tilhøre, og hos ham vil jeg bli.

And Hushai said unto Absalom, Nay; but whom Jehovah, and this people, and all the men of Israel have chosen, his will I be, and with him will I abide.

Og igjen, hvem skulle jeg tjene? Skulle jeg ikke tjene i din sønns nærvær? Som jeg har tjent i din fars nærvær, slik vil jeg være i din nærvær.

And again, whom should I serve? `should I' not `serve' in the presence of his son? as I have served in thy father's presence, so will I be in thy presence.

Da sa Absalom til Ahitofel: Gi råd om hva vi skal gjøre.

Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give your counsel what we shall do.

Ahitofel sa til Absalom: Gå inn til din fars medhustruer som han har latt bli tilbake for å vokte huset, så vil hele Israel høre at du har gjort deg hatefull for din far. Da vil styrken til alle som er med deg, bli sterk.

And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father's concubines, that he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then will the hands of all that are with thee be strong.

Så slo de opp et telt for Absalom på hustaket, og Absalom gikk inn til sin fars medhustruer i hele Israels påsyn.

So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in unto his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.

Ahitofels råd, som han ga i de dager, var som om en hadde spurt Guds ord. Slik var alle Ahitofels råd både for David og Absalom.

And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.
