Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:

and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only;

Jeg vil bringe tilbake alt folket til deg: mannen du søker, er som om alle vendte tilbake: så alt folket kan være i fred.

and I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: `so' all the people shall be in peace.

Dette forslaget behaget Absalom og alle Israels eldste.

And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

Da sa Absalom: Kall nå også på Husai fra Ark, og la oss høre hva han også sier.

Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.

Og da Husai kom til Absalom, sa Absalom til ham: Ahitofel har talt på denne måten: Skal vi gjøre etter hans ord? Hvis ikke, tal du.

And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do `after' his saying? if not, speak thou.

Husai sa til Absalom: Det rådet Ahitofel har gitt denne gangen, er ikke godt.

And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given this time is not good.

Husai sa videre: Du kjenner din far og hans menn, at de er mektige menn, og de er oppbrakte i sinnet, som en bjørn som er fratatt ungene sine i marken; og din far er en krigsmann som ikke vil holde seg blant folket.

Hushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

Se, han er nå skjult i en eller annen grop eller et annet sted: og det vil skje, når noen av dem faller ved første møte, at den som hører det vil si: Det har vært et slag blant folket som følger Absalom.

Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some `other' place: and it will come to pass, when some of them are fallen at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.

Selv den modige, hvis hjerte er som en løves hjerte, vil bli helt motløs; for hele Israel vet at din far er en mektig mann, og de som er med ham er tapre menn.

And even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they that are with him are valiant men.

Men jeg råder til at hele Israel samles til deg, fra Dan og helt til Beersheba, like mange som sanden ved sjøen; og at du drar i krig selv.

But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

Så skal vi komme over ham på et sted der han blir funnet, og vi vil gå til angrep som dugg faller på jorden; og av ham og av alle de mennene som er med ham, vil vi ikke etterlate oss så mye som én.

So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one.

Og hvis han har trukket seg tilbake til en by, vil hele Israel bringe tau til den byen, og vi vil dra den ned i elven, inntil det ikke finnes en liten stein der.

Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.

Og Absalom og hele Israels menn sa: Husais råd fra Ark er bedre enn Ahitofels råd. For Herren hadde bestemt å føre Ahitofels gode råd til fall, for at Herren kunne bringe ulykke over Absalom.

And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For Jehovah had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that Jehovah might bring evil upon Absalom.

Så sa Husai til prestene Sadok og Abjatar: Slik har Ahitofel rådet Absalom og Israels eldste; og slik har jeg rådet.

Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.

Nå, send raskt og fortell David, og si: Ikke bli her ved vadestedene i ørkenen i natt, men gå over, ellers blir kongen oppslukt og alt folket som er med ham.

Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.

Jonathan og Ahimaas ble ved En-Rogel; en pike pleide å gå og fortelle dem, og de gikk og fortalte kong David; for de kunne ikke bli sett når de kom inn i byen.

Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying by En-rogel; and a maid-servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David: for they might not be seen to come into the city.

Men en gutt så dem og fortalte det til Absalom: og begge to gikk bort i all hast og kom til huset til en mann i Bahurim, som hadde en brønn i gårdsplassen; og de gikk ned der.

But a lad saw them, and told Absalom: and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither.

Kvinnen tok og spredte et dekke over brønnens munning og strødde knust korn derpå; og ingenting ble oppdaget.

And the woman took and spread the covering over the well's mouth, and strewed bruised grain thereon; and nothing was known.

Absaloms tjenere kom til kvinnen i huset; og de sa: Hvor er Ahimaas og Jonathan? Kvinnen sa til dem: De har gått over bekken. Og da de lette og ikke kunne finne dem, vendte de tilbake til Jerusalem.

And Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They are gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

Da de var gått, kom de opp fra brønnen, og gikk og fortalte kong David; de sa til David: Stå opp, og dra raskt over vannet, for slik har Ahitofel rådet mot dere.

And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David, Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water; for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.

Så sto David opp, og alt folket som var med ham, og de gikk over Jordan: da det ble morgenlys, var det ingen av dem som ikke hadde gått over Jordan.

Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over the Jordan.

Og da Ahitofel så at hans råd ikke ble fulgt, salte han eselet sitt, reiste hjem til byen sin, satte huset sitt i stand, og hengte seg; han døde, og ble begravet i sin fars grav.

And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

David kom til Mahanaim. Absalom krysset Jordan med alle Israels menn som var med ham.

Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

Absalom satte Amasa over hæren i stedet for Joab. Nå var Amasa sønn av en mann som hette Jitra, en israelitt, som gikk inn til Abigal, datteren til Nahasj, søsteren til Seruja, Joabs mor.

And Absalom set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Israelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab's mother.

Og Israel og Absalom slo leir i Gileads land.

And Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.

Da David kom til Mahanaim, kom Sjobi, sønn av Nahasj fra Rabba, ammonittenes barn, og Makir, sønn av Ammiel fra Lodebar, og Barsillai, gileaditten fra Rogelim,

And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,

med senger, skåler, leirkar, hvete, bygg, mel, ristet korn, bønner, linser og ristet pulser.

brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched `grain', and beans, and lentils, and parched `pulse',

og honning, smør, sauer og oster fra buskapen, til David og folket som var med ham, for å spise. For de sa: Folket er sultne, trette og tørste i ørkenen.

and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of the herd, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.
