Da kom alle Israels stammer til David i Hebron og sa: «Se, vi er ditt bein og ditt kjøtt.

Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was thou that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and Jehovah said to thee, Thou shalt be shepherd of my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over Israel.

Så kom alle Israels eldste til kongen i Hebron, og kong David inngikk en pakt med dem i Hebron for Herrens ansikt, og de salvet David til konge over Israel.

So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Jehovah: and they anointed David king over Israel.

David var tretti år gammel da han ble konge, og han regjerte i førti år.

David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

I Hebron regjerte han over Juda i syv år og seks måneder, og i Jerusalem regjerte han i trettitre år over hele Israel og Juda.

In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

Kongen og hans menn dro til Jerusalem mot jebusittene, som bodde i landet. De sa til David: «Hvis du ikke fjerner de blinde og lamme, vil du ikke komme inn her,» for de tenkte: «David kan ikke komme inn her.»

And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither; thinking, David cannot come in hither.

Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion; the same is the city of David.

På den dagen sa David: «Den som slår jebusittene, la ham stige opp til vannledningen og slå de blinde og lamme, de som Davids sjel hater.» Derfor sier de: «De blinde og lamme skal ikke komme inn i huset.»

And David said on that day, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites, let him get up to the watercourse, and `smite' the lame and the blind, that are hated of David's soul. Wherefore they say, There are the blind and the lame; he cannot come into the house.

David bodde i borgen og kalte den Davids by. Og David bygde rundt om fra Millo og innover.

And David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.

David ble større og større, for Herren, hærskarenes Gud, var med ham.

And David waxed greater and greater; for Jehovah, the God of hosts, was with him.

Hiram, kongen i Tyrus, sendte sendebud til David med sedertrær, snekkere og steinhuggere, og de bygde et hus for David.

And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar-trees, and carpenters, and masons; and they built David a house.

David innså at Herren hadde grunnfestet ham som konge over Israel, og at han hadde opphøyet hans rike for sitt folk Israels skyld.

And David perceived that Jehovah had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.

David tok seg flere medhustruer og hustruer fra Jerusalem etter at han kom fra Hebron; han fikk også flere sønner og døtre.

And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron; and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.

and Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphelet.

Da filisterne hørte at de hadde salvet David til konge over Israel, dro alle filisterne opp for å søke David. David hørte det og gikk ned til borgen.

And when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the stronghold.

Filisterne kom og spredte seg utover Refaim-dalen.

Now the Philistines had come and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

David spurte Herren: «Skal jeg dra opp mot filisterne? Vil du gi dem i min hånd?» Herren svarte David: «Dra opp, for jeg vil visselig gi filisterne i din hånd.»

And David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into my hand? And Jehovah said unto David, Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into thy hand.

David kom til Ba’al-Perasim, og der slo David dem. Han sa: «Herren har brutt igjennom mine fiender foran meg, som en vannflom.» Derfor kalte han det stedet Ba’al-Perasim.

And David came to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there; and he said, Jehovah hath broken mine enemies before me, like the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baal-perazim.

De lot sine avgudsbilder bli der, og David og hans menn tok dem bort.

And they left their images there; and David and his men took them away.

Men filisterne kom opp igjen og spredte seg utover Refaim-dalen.

And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

Da David spurte Herren, sa han: «Du skal ikke dra opp; sirkle bak dem og angripe dem fra skogbærene.»

And when David inquired of Jehovah, he said, Thou shalt not go up: make a circuit behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry-trees.

Og når du hører lyden av marsjering i toppen av skogbærene, da skal du gå til angrep, for da har Herren gått ut foran deg for å slå filisternes hær.

And it shall be, when thou hearest the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry-trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself; for then is Jehovah gone out before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.

David gjorde som Herren hadde befalt ham, og han slo filisterne fra Geba helt til Gezer.

And David did so, as Jehovah commanded him, and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gezer.
