I det tredje året av Jojakims regjeringstid, kongen av Juda, kom Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, til Jerusalem og beleiret det.

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

Herren ga Jojakim, kongen av Juda, i hans hånd, sammen med noen av karene fra Guds hus; og han førte dem til landet Sinear, til huset til sin gud, og han brakte karene inn i skattkammeret til sin gud.

And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god.

Kongen sa til Aspenas, lederen for hans evnukker, at han skulle hente noen av Israels barn, av kongelig ætt og av de edle,

And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in `certain' of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;

unge menn uten lyte, som var vakre, dyktige i all visdom, utrustet med kunnskap, som forstod vitenskap og som hadde evne til å tjene i kongens palass; og at han skulle lære dem kaldeernes språk og skriftspråk.

youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skilful in all wisdom, and endued with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king's palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

Kongen bestemte en daglig porsjon til dem av kongens fine mat og av vinen han drakk, og at de skulle opplæres i tre år; ved slutten av denne tiden skulle de stå for kongen.

And the king appointed for them a daily portion of the king's dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at the end thereof they should stand before the king.

Blant dem var Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja, av Judas barn.

Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

Lederen for evnukkene ga dem nye navn: Daniel ble kalt Beltesasar, Hananja ble kalt Sjadrak, Misjael ble kalt Mesjak og Asarja ble kalt Abed-Nego.

And the prince of the eunuchs gave names unto them: unto Daniel he gave `the name of' Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, `of' Shadrach; and to Mishael, `of' Meshach; and to Azariah, `of' Abed-nego.

Men Daniel bestemte seg for å ikke gjøre seg uren med kongens fine mat eller vinen han drakk; derfor ba han lederen for evnukkene om at han ikke skulle gjøre seg uren.

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Gud lot Daniel finne velvilje og medfølelse hos lederen for evnukkene.

Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.

Og lederen for evnukkene sa til Daniel: Jeg frykter min herre, kongen, som har bestemt deres mat og drikke; for hvorfor skulle han se deres ansikter være mer usunne enn de unge menn som er på deres alder? Da ville dere sette mitt hode i fare hos kongen.

And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths that are of your own age? so would ye endanger my head with the king.

Da sa Daniel til tilsynsmannen som lederen for evnukkene hadde satt over Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja:

Then said Daniel to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

Test dine tjenere, ber jeg deg, i ti dager; la dem gi oss grønnsaker å spise og vann å drikke.

Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

La vårt utseende bli sett overfor deg, og utseendet til de unge mennene som spiser av kongens fine mat; og som du ser, så behandle dine tjenere.

Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the youths that eat of the king's dainties; and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

Så han lyttet til dem i denne saken, og testet dem i ti dager.

So he hearkened unto them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

Ved slutten av ti dager så de bedre ut og var fyldigere av kropp enn alle de unge mennene som hadde spist av kongens fine mat.

And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths that did eat of the king's dainties.

Derfor tok tilsynsmannen bort deres fine mat og vinen de skulle drikke, og ga dem grønnsaker.

So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.

Gud ga disse fire unge menn kunnskap og dyktighet i all lærdom og visdom; og Daniel hadde forstand på alle syner og drømmer.

Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

Ved slutten av de dagene som kongen hadde bestemt at de skulle bli brakt inn, førte lederen for evnukkene dem inn for Nebukadnesar.

And at the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

Kongen snakket med dem, og blant dem alle ble ingen funnet slike som Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja; derfor stod de for kongen.

And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

I alle saker som krevde visdom og forstand, som kongen spurte dem om, fant han dem ti ganger bedre enn alle magikerne og trollmennene i hele hans rike.

And in every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his realm.

Og Daniel ble værende til det første året av kong Kyros.

And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
