Nebukadnesar, kongen, til alle folk, nasjoner og språk som bor på hele jorden: Fred være med dere i overflod.

Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all the peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied unto you.

Det har vært godt for meg å vise de tegn og under som Den Høyeste Gud har gjort mot meg.

It hath seemed good unto me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God hath wrought toward me.

Hvor store er hans tegn! Og hvor mektige er hans under! Hans rike er et evig rike, og hans herredømme er fra slekt til slekt.

How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

Jeg, Nebukadnesar, var trygg i mitt hus og blomstrende i mitt palass.

I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace.

Jeg så en drøm som gjorde meg redd; og tankene på min seng og synene i mitt hode forstyrret meg.

I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

Derfor ga jeg en befaling om å bringe alle de vise menn i Babylon til meg, så de kunne fortelle meg drømmens tydning.

Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream.

Da kom magikerne, trollmennene, kaldeerne og spåmennene; og jeg fortalte drømmen for dem, men de kunne ikke gjøre kjent for meg hva den betydde.

Then came in the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.

Men til sist kom Daniel inn for meg, han som kalles Beltsasar etter navnet til min gud, og i ham er de hellige guders ånd: og jeg fortalte drømmen for ham, og sa:

But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and I told the dream before him, `saying',

Å Beltsasar, mester over magikerne, fordi jeg vet at de hellige guders ånd er i deg, og ingen hemmelighet er vanskelig for deg, fortell meg synene av min drøm som jeg har sett, og dens tydning.

O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.

Dette var synene i mitt hode på min seng: Jeg så, og se, et tre i jordens midte; og høyden var stor.

Thus were the visions of my head upon my bed: I saw, and, behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and the height thereof was great.

Treet vokste og ble sterkt, og dets høyde nådde himmelen, og dets syn rakk til jordens ende.

The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth.

Det hadde vakre blader og rikelig med frukt; i det var det mat for alle: markens dyr fant skygge under det, og himmelens fugler bodde i dets grener, og alt levende ble næret av det.

The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was food for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the birds of the heavens dwelt in the branches thereof, and all flesh was fed from it.

Jeg så i synene av mitt hode på min seng, og se, en vokter og en hellig kom ned fra himmelen.

I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from heaven.

Han ropte høyt og sa: Hogg ned treet og kutt av dets grener, rist av dets blader og spre dets frukt: la dyrene flykte fra under det og fuglene fra dets grener.

He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches.

Men la stubbens røtter bli igjen i jorden, med et bånd av jern og bronse, i markens friske gress; og la det bli vått av himmelens dugg og ha sin del med markens dyr i jordens gress:

Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven: and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth:

la dets hjerte forandres fra menneskets, og la et dyrehjerte bli gitt til det; og la syv tider gå over det.

let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.

Denne dommen er etter vokternes befaling, og etter de helliges ord, for at de levende skal vite at Den Høyeste hersker i menneskenes rike, og gir det til hvem han vil, og innsetter den ringeste blant mennesker over det.

The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the lowest of men.

Denne drømmen så jeg, kong Nebukadnesar; og du, Beltsasar, forklar tydningen, for alle de vise menn i mitt rike er ikke i stand til å gjøre kjent tydningen for meg; men du er i stand, for de hellige guders ånd er i deg.

This dream I, king Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation; but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.

Da ble Daniel, som ble kalt Beltsasar, forundret en stund, og hans tanker forstyrret ham. Kongen talte og sa: Beltsasar, la ikke drømmen eller tydningen forstyrre deg. Beltsasar svarte og sa: Min herre, måtte drømmen gjelde dine fiender, og dens tydning dine motstandere.

Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken dumb for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine adversaries.

Treet som du så, som vokste og ble sterkt, og hvis høyde nådde himmelen, og som kunne sees av hele jorden;

The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;

som hadde vakre blader og mye frukt, og i det var det mat for alle; under hvilket markens dyr bodde, og på hvis grener himmelens fugler hadde sitt tilhold:

whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was food for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the birds of the heavens had their habitation:

det er deg, konge, som har vokst og blitt sterk; for din storhet har vokst og når opp til himmelen, og ditt herredømme til jordens ender.

it is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong; for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

Og at kongen så en vokter og en hellig komme ned fra himmelen og si: Hogg ned treet og ødelegg det; men la stubbens røtter bli igjen i jorden, med et bånd av jern og bronse, i markens friske gress, og la det bli vått av himmelens dugg, og ha sin del med markens dyr, inntil syv tider går over det;

And whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of heaven: and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;

dette er tydningen, konge, og det er den Høyestes dom som er kommet over min herre kongen:

this is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which is come upon my lord the king:

at du skal drives bort fra menneskene, og din bolig skal være med markens dyr, og du skal spise gress som okser, og bli våt av himmelens dugg, og syv tider skal gå over deg, til du vet at Den Høyeste hersker i menneskenes rike, og gir det til hvem han vil.

that thou shalt be driven from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen, and shalt be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee; till thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

Og at de befalte å la stubbens røtter bli igjen: ditt rike skal være trygt for deg etter at du har lært at himmelen styrer.

And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.

Derfor, konge, la mitt råd bli akseptert, bryt med dine synder ved rettferdighet og dine misgjerninger ved å vise barmhjertighet mot de fattige, om det kunne føre til en forlengelse av din fred.

Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

Alt dette kom over kong Nebukadnesar.

All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.

På slutten av tolv måneder vandret han i det kongelige palasset i Babylon.

At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon.

Kongen talte og sa: Er ikke dette det store Babylon, som jeg har bygd til en kongelig bolig ved min makt og til min egen æres herlighet?

The king spake and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?

Mens ordene ennå var i kongens munn, falt det en stemme fra himmelen: Å, konge Nebukadnesar, til deg er det sagt: Riket er tatt fra deg.

While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, `saying', O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from thee:

Og du skal bli drevet bort fra menneskene, og din bolig skal være med markens dyr; du skal spise gress som okser; og syv tider skal gå over deg, til du vet at Den Høyeste hersker i menneskenes rike, og gir det til hvem han vil.

and thou shalt be driven from men; and they dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen; and seven times shall pass over thee; until thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

I samme stund ble det oppfylt over Nebukadnesar: han ble drevet bort fra menneskene og spiste gress som okser, og hans kropp ble våt av himmelens dugg, til hans hår vokste som ørnenes fjær og hans negler som fuglenes klør.

The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair was grown like eagles' `feathers', and his nails like birds' `claws'.

Og ved slutten av dagene løftet jeg, Nebukadnesar, mine øyne mot himmelen, og min fornuft kom tilbake til meg, og jeg velsignet Den Høyeste, og jeg priste og æret ham som lever for alltid; for hans herredømme er et evig herredømme, og hans rike er fra slekt til slekt.

And at the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him that liveth for ever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation.

Og alle jordens innbyggere regnes som intet; og han gjør som han vil med himmelens hærskare og med jordens innbyggere; og ingen kan stoppe hans hånd eller si til ham: Hva gjør du?

And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

På samme tid kom min fornuft tilbake til meg; og for min rikets herlighet kom min majestet og stråleglans tilbake til meg; mine rådgivere og herrer søkte meg, og jeg ble satt på tronen igjen, og enda større storhet ble gitt til meg.

At the same time mine understanding returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added unto me.

Nå, Nebukadnesar, priser, opphøyer og ærer jeg himmelens konge; for alle hans gjerninger er sannhet, og hans veier er rettferdighet; og de som vandrer i stolthet kan han ydmyke.

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
