Når du drar ut i krig mot dine fiender, og ser hester og vogner og en hær større enn din, skal du ikke frykte dem, for Herren din Gud er med deg, han som førte deg opp fra Egyptens land.

When thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, `and' a people more than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them; for Jehovah thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

Når dere nærmer dere kampen, skal presten komme frem og tale til folket,

And it shall be, when ye draw nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

og si til dem: Hør, Israel! Dere skal i dag gå til kamp mot deres fiender. La ikke hjertet deres bli motløst; frykt ikke, skjelv ikke, og vær ikke redde for dem,

and shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint; fear not, nor tremble, neither be ye affrighted at them;

for det er Herren deres Gud som går med dere for å kjempe mot deres fiender og frelse dere.

for Jehovah your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

Og lederne skal tale til folket og si: Er det noen som har bygget et nytt hus og ikke tatt det i bruk? La ham gå hjem igjen, så han ikke dør i krigen, og en annen tar det i bruk.

And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

Er det noen som har plantet en vingård og ikke høstet frukten derfra? La ham gå hjem igjen, så han ikke dør i krigen, og en annen høster frukten.

And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit thereof.

Er det noen som har forlovet seg med en kvinne og ikke tatt henne til hustru? La ham gå hjem igjen, så han ikke dør i krigen, og en annen tar henne til hustru.

And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

Lederne skal tale videre til folket og si: Er det noen som er redd og motløs? La ham gå hjem igjen, så ikke hans brødres hjerter blir motløse som hans eget.

And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart melt as his heart.

Når lederne er ferdige med å tale til folket, skal de sette ledere over hæren.

And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people.

Når du nærmer deg en by for å kjempe mot den, skal du tilby den fred.

When thou drawest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

Hvis den svarer deg med fred og åpner portene for deg, skal alle menneskene der bli dine treller og tjene deg.

And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that are found therein shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee.

Men hvis den ikke inngår fred med deg, men vil føre krig mot deg, da skal du beleire den.

And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

Når Herren din Gud overgir byen i din hånd, skal du slå i hjel alle mennene med sverdets egg.

and when Jehovah thy God delivereth it into thy hand, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

Men kvinnene, barna, dyrene og alt annet i byen, alt byttet kan du ta som bytte for deg selv. Du skal nyte dine fienders bytte, som Herren din Gud har gitt deg.

but the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take for a prey unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which Jehovah thy God hath given thee.

Slik skal du gjøre med alle byene som ligger langt borte fra deg, som ikke er av disse nasjonenes byer.

Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

Men i byene til de folkene som Herren din Gud gir deg som arv, skal du ikke la noen levende sjel unnslippe.

But of the cities of these peoples, that Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth;

Men du skal fullstendig utrydde dem: hetittene, amorittene, kanaaneerne, perisittene, hivittene og jebusittene, slik Herren din Gud har befalt deg.

but thou shalt utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Jehovah thy God hath commanded thee;

Så de ikke lærer dere å gjøre alle de avskyelige ting de har gjort for sine guder, og dere synder mot Herren deres Gud.

that they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so would ye sin against Jehovah your God.

Når du beleirer en by i lengre tid for å erobre den ved krig, skal du ikke ødelegge trærne ved å hogge dem ned med øks, for du kan spise av dem. Du skal ikke hogge dem ned, for er trærne på marken mennesker, så de skal beleires av deg?

When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding an axe against them; for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of thee?

Bare trærne som du vet ikke bærer spiselig frukt, skal du ødelegge og hogge ned, og du skal bygge beleiringsverker mot byen som kjemper mot deg, til den faller.

Only the trees of which thou knowest that they are not trees for food, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.
