Og Moses kalte til seg hele Israel og sa til dem: Hør, Israel, de forskrifter og lover som jeg taler til dere i dag, så dere kan lære dem og passe på å gjøre dem.

And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and observe to do them.

Herren vår Gud inngikk en pakt med oss ved Horeb.

Jehovah our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.

Herren inngikk ikke denne pakten med våre fedre, men med oss, vi som er her i live i dag.

Jehovah made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

Herren talte til dere ansikt til ansikt på fjellet ut av ilden,

Jehovah spake with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire,

(Jeg sto mellom Herren og dere på den tiden for å kunngjøre Herrens ord for dere, for dere var redde for ilden og gikk ikke opp på fjellet;) og sa:

(I stood between Jehovah and you at that time, to show you the word of Jehovah: for ye were afraid because of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,

Jeg er Herren din Gud, som førte deg ut av landet Egypt, ut av trellehuset.

I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Du skal ikke ha andre guder foruten meg.

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Du skal ikke lage deg et utskåret bilde eller noen liknelse av noe som er i himmelen der oppe, eller som er på jorden her nede, eller i vannet under jorden.

Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, `nor' any likeness `of anything' that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Du skal ikke bøye deg for dem eller tjene dem; for jeg, Herren din Gud, er en nidkjær Gud, som hjemsøker fedrenes misgjerning på barna, på tredje og fjerde ledd av dem som hater meg,

thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I, Jehovah, thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me;

men som viser miskunnhet mot tusener av dem som elsker meg og holder mine bud.

and showing lovingkindness unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

Du skal ikke misbruke Herren din Guds navn; for Herren vil ikke holde den uskyldig som misbruker hans navn.

Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain: for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Hold sabbatsdagen hellig, slik som Herren din Gud har befalt deg.

Observe the sabbath day, to keep it holy, as Jehovah thy God commanded thee.

Seks dager skal du arbeide og gjøre all din gjerning,

Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;

men den syvende dag er en sabbat for Herren din Gud. Da skal du ikke gjøre noe arbeid, verken du selv, din sønn eller din datter, din tjener eller tjenestepike, din okse eller esel eller noe annet av ditt fe eller innflytteren som bor innenfor dine porter, så din tjener og din tjenestepike kan hvile som du.

but the seventh day is a sabbath unto Jehovah thy God: `in it' thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy man-servant and thy maid-servant may rest as well as thou.

Og du skal huske at du selv var trell i landet Egypt, og Herren din Gud førte deg ut derfra med sterk hånd og utstrakt arm. Derfor har Herren din Gud befalt deg å holde sabbatsdagen.

And thou shalt remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and Jehovah thy God brought thee out thence by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm: therefore Jehovah thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

Du skal hedre din far og din mor, slik Herren din Gud har befalt deg, så du kan leve lenge, og det kan gå deg vel i det landet som Herren din Gud gir deg.

Honor thy father and thy mother, as Jehovah thy God commanded thee; that thy days may be long, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee.

Du skal ikke slå i hjel.

Thou shalt not kill.

Du skal ikke bryte ekteskapet.

Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

Du skal ikke stjele.

Neither shalt thou steal.

Du skal ikke bære falskt vitnesbyrd mot din neste.

Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Du skal ikke begjære din nestes hustru; du skal ikke ønske deg din nestes hus, hans åker, hans tjener eller tjenestepike, hans okse eller esel, eller noe annet som tilhører din neste.

Neither shalt thou covet thy neighbor's wife; neither shalt thou desire thy neighbor's house, his field, or his man-servant, or his maid-servant, his ox, or his ass, or anything that is thy neighbor's.

Disse ordene talte Herren til hele forsamlingen deres på fjellet i midten av ilden, skyen og det tette mørket, med en sterk røst, og han la ikke noe til. Han skrev dem på to steintavler og ga dem til meg.

These words Jehovah spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them upon two tables of stone, and gave them unto me.

Og det skjedde, da dere hørte røsten midt ut av mørket, mens fjellet brant i ild, at dere kom til meg, hele lederne for stammene deres og de eldste,

And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;

og dere sa: Se, Herren vår Gud har vist oss sin herlighet og sin storhet, og vi har hørt hans røst midt ut av ilden. I dag har vi sett at Gud taler med mennesket, og han lever.

and ye said, Behold, Jehovah our God hath showed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth speak with man, and he liveth.

Men nå, hvorfor skulle vi dø? For denne store ilden vil oppsluke oss. Hvis vi hører Herrens vår Guds røst mer, vil vi dø.

Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of Jehovah our God any more, then we shall die.

For hvem av alt kjød har hørt den levende Guds røst talende midt ut av ilden, som vi, og levde?

For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

Gå du nærmere og hør alt det Herren vår Gud vil si, og tal til oss alt det Herren vår Gud taler til deg, og vi vil høre det og gjøre det.

Go thou near, and hear all that Jehovah our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that Jehovah our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it.

Og Herren hørte lyden av deres ord da dere talte til meg, og Herren sa til meg: Jeg har hørt lyden av ordene til dette folket som de talte til deg; de har talt vel i alt det de har sagt.

And Jehovah heard the voice of your words, when ye spake unto me; and Jehovah said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have well said all that they have spoken.

Å, at de alltid hadde et slikt hjerte i seg, at de fryktet meg og holdt mine bud alle dager, så det kunne gå dem vel og deres barn for alltid!

Oh that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

Gå og si til dem: Vend tilbake til teltene deres.

Go say to them, Return ye to your tents.

Men du, stå her hos meg, så vil jeg tale til deg alle budene, forskriftene og lovene, som du skal lære dem, så de kan gjøre dem i det landet jeg gir dem som deres eiendom.

But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.

Dere skal passe nøye på å gjøre som Herren deres Gud har befalt dere; dere skal ikke vike til høyre eller venstre.

Ye shall observe to do therefore as Jehovah your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

Dere skal vandre på alle de veier Herren deres Gud har befalt dere, så dere kan leve og det kan gå dere vel, og dere kan leve lenge i det landet dere skal ta i eie.

Ye shall walk in all the way which Jehovah your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.
