Og Gud sa til Jakob: "Reis deg, dra opp til Betel og bo der. Bygg et alter der til Gud, som viste seg for deg da du flyktet for din bror Esau."

And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, who appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.

Da sa Jakob til sitt husfolk og til alle som var med ham: "Fjern de fremmede gudene som er blant dere, rens dere og skift klær.

Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the foreign gods that are among you, and purify yourselves, and change your garments:

La oss reise oss og dra opp til Betel, så jeg kan bygge et alter der til Gud, som svarte meg den dagen jeg var i nød og som har vært med meg på min vandring."

and let us arise, and go up to Beth-el; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.

De ga Jakob alle de fremmede gudene de hadde, og ringene som var i ørene deres; og Jakob gravde dem ned under eika ved Sikem.

And they gave unto Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hand, and the rings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

De dro videre, og Guds frykt rammet byene rundt dem, så de ikke forfulgte Jakobs sønner.

And they journeyed: and a terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

Jakob kom til Luz i Kanaans land, som også kalles Betel, han og alle som var med ham.

So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan (the same is Beth-el), he and all the people that were with him.

Der bygde han et alter og kalte stedet El-Betel, for der hadde Gud åpenbart seg for ham da han flyktet for sin bror.

And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el; because there God was revealed unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

Debora, Rebekkas amme, døde, og hun ble gravlagt nedenfor Betel under eika, og dette stedet ble kalt Allon-Bakut.

And Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried below Beth-el under the oak: and the name of it was called Allon-bacuth.

Gud viste seg igjen for Jakob da han kom fra Paddan-Aram, og velsignet ham.

And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him.

Gud sa til ham: "Ditt navn er Jakob, men du skal ikke lenger kalles Jakob. Israelskal være ditt navn." Og han kalte ham Israel.

And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.

Gud sa også til ham: "Jeg er Gud den Allmektige. Vær fruktbar og bli mange! Et folk, ja en ansamling av folkeslag, skal komme fra deg, og konger skal utgå fra dine ledd.

And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;

Det landet jeg ga til Abraham og Isak, gir jeg til deg, og dine etterkommere etter deg vil jeg gi dette landet."

and the land which I gave unto Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.

Og Gud forlot ham der han hadde talt med ham.

And God went up from him in the place where he spake with him.

Jakob reiste en steinstøtte på det stedet hvor Gud hadde talt med ham. Han helte ut et drikkoffer over den og helte olje på den.

And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he spake with him, a pillar of stone: and he poured out a drink-offering thereon, and poured oil thereon.

Jakob kalte stedet hvor Gud hadde talt med ham, Betel.

And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Beth-el.

De dro fra Betel, og enda var det et stykke vei til Efrat da Rakel skulle føde, og hun hadde harde veer.

And they journeyed from Beth-el; and there was still some distance to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labor.

Mens hun hadde sterke fødselsveer, sa jordmoren til henne: "Vær ikke redd, for nå får du enda en sønn."

And it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; for now thou shalt have another son.

Og mens hennes liv ebbet ut (for hun døde), kalte hun gutten Ben-Oni, men hans far kalte ham Benjamin.

And it came to pass, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin.

Rakel døde og ble gravlagt på veien til Efrat, som også kalles Betlehem.

And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath (the same is Beth-lehem).

Jakob reiste en minnestein over hennes grav. Dette er Rakels gravstein til denne dag.

And Jacob set up a pillar upon her grave: the same is the Pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.

Israel dro videre og slo leir bortenfor Migdal-Eder.

And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Eder.

Mens Israel bodde i det landet, gikk Ruben og lå med Bilha, sin fars medhustru, og Israel fikk høre om det. Nå hadde Jakob tolv sønner:

And it came to pass, while Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

Leas sønner: Ruben, Jakobs førstefødte, og Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issakar, og Sebulon,

The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob's first-born, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun;

Rakels sønner: Josef og Benjamin,

the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;

og Bilhas, Rakels tjenestepikes sønner: Dan og Naftali,

and the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid: Dan and Naphtali;

og Zilpas, Leas tjenestepikes sønner: Gad og Aser. Dette var Jakobs sønner, født til ham i Paddan-Aram.

and the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid: Gad and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, that were born to him in Paddan-aram.

Jakob kom til sin far Isak i Mamre, i Kirjat-Arba, det samme som Hebron, der Abraham og Isak hadde bodd som utlendinger.

And Jacob came unto Isaac his father to Mamre, to Kiriath-arba (the same is Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

Isak ble hundre og åtti år gammel.

And the days of Isaac were a hundred and fourscore years.

Isak utåndet og døde, gammel og mett av dager, og han ble samlet til sitt folk. Esau og Jakob, hans sønner, gravla ham.

And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, old and full of days: and Esau and Jacob his sons buried him.
