And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hand of the Ishmaelites, that had brought him down thither.

Og Herren var med Josef, så han ble en fremgangsrik mann. Han var i huset til sin egyptiske herre.

And Jehovah was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

Herren var med ham, og hans herre så at alt han gjorde ble velsignet av Herren.

And his master saw that Jehovah was with him, and that Jehovah made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

Josef fant velvilje i hans øyne og fikk tjene ham. Han satte ham over sitt hus, og alt det han hadde, overlot han til Josef.

And Joseph found favor in his sight, and he ministered unto him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

Fra den tiden han satte ham over sitt hus og alt han eide, velsignet Herren den egyptiske husets skyld for Josefs skyld. Herrens velsignelse var over alt han hadde, både i huset og på marken.

And it came to pass from the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that Jehovah blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of Jehovah was upon all that he had, in the house and in the field.

Han overlot alt til Josef og bekymret seg ikke for noe, unntatt for maten han spiste. Josef var vakker av utseende og godt ansett.

And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not aught `that was' with him, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was comely, and well-favored.

Etter en tid kastet hans herres kone sine øyne på Josef og sa: «Ligg med meg.»

And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.

Men han nektet og sa til hans herres kone: «Min herre bekymrer seg ikke for noe i huset, og alt han eier, har han gitt i mine hender.

But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master knoweth not what is with me in the house, and he hath put all that he hath into my hand:

Han er ikke større enn meg i huset, og han har ikke holdt noe tilbake for meg unntatt deg, fordi du er hans kone. Hvordan kan jeg da gjøre en så stor ond gjerning og synde mot Gud?»

he is not greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back anything from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

Selv om hun snakket til Josef dag etter dag, nektet han å ligge ved henne eller være med henne.

And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, `or' to be with her.

En dag gikk han inn i huset for å gjøre sitt arbeid, mens ingen av mennene var inne.

And it came to pass about this time, that he went into the house to do his work; and there was none of the men of the house there within.

Hun grep ham i kappen og sa: «Ligg med meg!» Men han lot kappen bli i hennes hånd, flyktet og løp ut.

And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

Da hun så at han hadde latt kappen ligge i hennes hånd og flyktet ut,

And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

kalte hun husets menn til seg og sa til dem: «Se, han har ført en hebreer hit til oss for å spotte oss! Han kom inn for å ligge med meg, men jeg ropte med høy røst.

that she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in a Hebrew unto us to mock us: he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:

Da han hørte at jeg løftet min røst og ropte, lot han kappen bli igjen og flyktet ut.»

and it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and fled, and got him out.

Hun beholdt kappen hos seg til hans herre kom hjem.

And she laid up his garment by her, until his master came home.

Hun fortalte ham de samme ordene og sa: «Den hebraiske tjeneren som du har brakt hit, kom inn til meg for å spotte meg.

And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, whom thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:

Men da jeg løftet min røst og ropte, lot han kappen ligge igjen og flyktet ut.»

and it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and fled out.

Da hans herre hørte sin kones ord som hun sa til ham, ble han sint.

And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.

Han tok Josef og satte ham i fengsel, der kongens fanger var lenket. Og Josef ble igjen i fengselet.

And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.

Men Herren var med Josef, og viste ham trofasthet. Han ga ham velvilje i overtollens øyne.

But Jehovah was with Joseph, and showed kindness unto him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

Overtollen betrodde Josef alle fangene i fengselet, og hva de enn gjorde der, var det Josef som gjorde det.

And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

Overtollen så ikke etter noe av det som var under hans hånd, fordi Herren var med ham; og alt han gjorde, lot Herren lykkes.

The keeper of the prison looked not to anything that was under his hand, because Jehovah was with him; and that which he did, Jehovah made it prosper.
