Det skjedde i det fjortende året av kong Hiskias regjering, at kong Sankerib fra Assyria kom opp imot alle de befestede byene i Juda og inntok dem.

Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.

Kongen av Assyria sendte Rabshake fra Lakisj til Jerusalem til kong Hiskia med en stor hær. Han stilte seg ved vannledningen fra den øvre dammen, på veien til vaskeplassene.

And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.

Da kom Eliakim, sønn av Hilkia, som var over palasset, og statsskriveren Sjebna og kronikøren Joah, sønn av Asaf, ut til ham.

Then came forth unto him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder.

Rabshake sa til dem: Si til Hiskia: Så sier den store kongen, kongen av Assyria: Hva er det du stoler på?

And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

Du sier at dine råd og din styrke for krigen bare er tomme ord; nå, hvem er det du stoler på, siden du har gjort opprør mot meg?

I say, `thy' counsel and strength for the war are but vain words: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou hast rebelled against me?

Se, du stoler på denne knekte rørstokken, Egypt! Hvis noen støtter seg på den, vil den gå inn i hånden og gjennombore den. Slik er farao, kongen av Egypt, for alle som stoler på ham.

Behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust on him.

Men hvis du sier til meg: Vi stoler på Herren vår Gud, er ikke det han hvis høyder og altere Hiskia har revet ned, og sagt til Juda og Jerusalem: Dere skal tilbe foran dette alteret?

But if thou say unto me, We trust in Jehovah our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?

Så gi derfor løfter til min herre kongen av Assyria, så skal jeg gi deg to tusen hester, hvis du kan sette ryttere på dem.

Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

Hvordan kan du vende bort ansiktet til en av de minste kapteinene blant min herres tjenere, og sette din lit til Egypt for vogner og ryttere?

How then canst thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

Har jeg nå kommet opp uten Herren mot dette landet for å ødelegge det? Herren sa til meg: Gå opp mot dette landet, og ødelegg det.

And am I now come up without Jehovah against this land to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

Da sa Eliakim, Sjebna og Joah til Rabshake: Vi ber deg, tal til dine tjenere på arameisk, for vi forstår det, og tal ikke til oss på judeisk så folket på muren hører det.

Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

Men Rabshake sa: Har min herre sendt meg til din herre og til deg for å tale disse ordene? Har han ikke sendt meg til mennene som sitter på muren, for å spise sitt eget skitt og drikke sitt eget vann sammen med dere?

But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? `hath he' not `sent me' to the men that sit upon the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own water with you?

Da stod Rabshake og ropte med høy røst på judeisk: Hør ordene fra den store kongen, kongen av Assyria.

Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

Så sier kongen: La ikke Hiskia bedra dere, for han vil ikke kunne redde dere.

Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you:

La ikke Hiskia få dere til å stole på Herren ved å si: Herren vil sannelig frelse oss; denne byen skal ikke gis i hendene på kongen av Assyria.

neither let Hezekiah make you trust in Jehovah, saying, Jehovah will surely deliver us; this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

Lytt ikke til Hiskia! For så sier kongen av Assyria: Gjør fred med meg, og kom ut til meg; og spis hver av sin vinstokk og hver av sitt fikentre, og drikk hver sitt eget brønns vann,

Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig-tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;

til jeg kommer og tar dere med til et land som deres eget land, et land med korn og ny vin, et land med brød og vingårder.

until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

Vokt dere for at ikke Hiskia overtaler dere ved å si: Herren vil redde oss. Har noen av nasjonenes guder reddet sitt land fra kongen av Assyrias hånd?

Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, Jehovah will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

Hvor er gudene fra Hamat og Arpad? Hvor er gudene fra Sefarvaim? Har de berget Samaria ut av min hånd?

Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

Hvem er de blant alle landenes guder som har frelst sitt land ut av min hånd, at Herren skulle frelse Jerusalem ut av min hånd?

Who are they among all the gods of these countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Jehovah should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

Men de tidde og svarte ham ikke med et ord, for kongens befaling var: Svar ham ikke.

But they held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

Da kom Eliakim, sønn av Hilkia, som var over palasset, og statsskriveren Sjebna og kronikøren Joah, sønn av Asaf, til Hiskia med klærne sønderrevet, og fortalte ham Rabshakes ord.

Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
