Hør Herrens ord som han taler til dere, Israels hus:

Hear ye the word which Jehovah speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

Så sier Herren: Lær ikke folkenes veier, og vær ikke forferdet over himmelens tegn; for folkeslagene er forferdet over dem.

thus saith Jehovah, Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the nations are dismayed at them.

For skikkene til folkene er tomhet; en feller et tre i skogen, det er håndverkerens verk med øksen.

For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe.

De pynter det med sølv og gull; de fester det med nagler og hammere, så det ikke skal bevege seg.

They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

De er som en palme, formet og stum: de må bæres, for de kan ikke gå. Vær ikke redd for dem; for de kan ikke gjøre ondt, heller ikke kan de gjøre godt.

They are like a palm-tree, of turned work, and speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.

Det finnes ingen som er lik deg, Herre; du er stor, og ditt navn er stort i kraft.

There is none like unto thee, O Jehovah; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

Hvem skulle ikke frykte deg, du folkenes konge? For det tilkommer deg; for blant alle nasjonenes vise menn, og i hele deres kongedømme, finnes det ingen som er lik deg.

Who should not fear thee, O King of the nations? for to thee doth it appertain; forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is none like unto thee.

Men de er alle sammen brutale og dumme: læren om avguder er bare treverk.

But they are together brutish and foolish: the instruction of idols! it is but a stock.

Sølv blir slått til plater, som er hentet fra Tarsis, og gull fra Ufas, håndverkernes verk, og gullsmedenes arbeid; blått og purpur er deres klær; de er alle dyktige håndverkeres verk.

There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the artificer and of the hands of the goldsmith; blue and purple for their clothing; they are all the work of skilful men.

Men Herren er den sanne Gud; han er den levende Gud og en evig konge: ved hans vrede bever jorden, og folkeslagene kan ikke tåle hans harme.

But Jehovah is the true God; he is the living God, and an everlasting King: at his wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations are not able to abide his indignation.

Slik skal dere si til dem: Gudene som ikke har skapt himmelen og jorden, de skal gå til grunne fra jorden og fra det som er under himlene.

Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.

Han har skapt jorden ved sin makt, han har grunnfestet verden ved sin visdom, og ved sin forstand har han utstrakt himlene:

He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding hath he stretched out the heavens:

Når han taler, er det et bulder av vann i himlene, og han lar dampene stige opp fra jordens ender; han skaper lysglimt for regnet, og fører vindene ut av sine forråd.

when he uttereth his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasuries.

Hvert menneske har blitt uten vett og kunnskap; hver gullsmed blir til skamme over sitt bilde; for hans støpebilde er løgn, og det er ingen ånd i dem.

Every man is become brutish `and is' without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

De er tomhet, et verk av villfarelse: når tiden for deres dom kommer, skal de gå til grunne.

They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

Jakobs del er ikke som disse; for han er opphavet til alt, og Israel er stammen av hans arv: Herren, hærskarenes Gud, er hans navn.

The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance: Jehovah of hosts is his name.

Samle dine eiendeler ut av landet, du som bor i beleiring.

Gather up thy wares out of the land, O thou that abidest in the siege.

For så sier Herren: Se, jeg vil slynge ut innbyggerne i landet denne gangen, og jeg vil trenge dem, så de skal føle det.

For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and will distress them, that they may feel `it'.

Ve meg for min skade! Min skade er alvorlig; men jeg sa: Sannelig, dette er min sorg, og jeg må bære den.

Woe is me because of my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is `my' grief, and I must bear it.

Mitt telt er ødelagt, og alle mine snorer er revet over: mine barn har forlatt meg og er borte; det er ingen igjen til å spre mitt telt og sette opp mine teltduker.

My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth from me, and they are not: there is none to spread my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

For hyrdene har blitt tankeløse, og har ikke spurt Herren; derfor har de ikke hatt hell med seg, og hele deres hjord er spredt.

For the shepherds are become brutish, and have not inquired of Jehovah: therefore they have not prospered, and all their flocks are scattered.

Lyden av nyheter, se, den kommer, og en stor uro fra nordlige land, for å gjøre Judas byer øde, til et tilfluktssted for sjakaler.

The voice of tidings, behold, it cometh, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling-place of jackals.

O Herre, jeg vet at menneskets vei ikke er i ham selv: det er ikke opp til mannen som vandrer å styre sine skritt.

O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

O Herre, irettesett meg, men med måte; ikke i din vrede, så du ikke gjør meg til intet.

O Jehovah, correct me, but in measure: not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

Utøs din vrede over de folkeslag som ikke kjenner deg, og over de familier som ikke påkaller ditt navn; for de har fortært Jakob, ja, de har fortært ham og oppslukt ham, og har ødelagt hans bolig.

Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have devoured Jacob, yea, they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation.
