Og Herrens ord kom til meg og sa,

And the word of Jehovah came to me, saying,

Gå og rop i Jerusalems ører: Så sier Herren: Jeg husker din ungdoms godhet, din kjærlighet da du var forlovet; hvordan du fulgte meg i ørkenen, i et land som ikke var sådd.

Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, I remember for thee the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals; how thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

Israel var hellig for Herren, hans førstegrøde: Alle som åt av ham ble skyldige; ondt hendte dem, sier Herren.

Israel `was' holiness unto Jehovah, the first-fruits of his increase: all that devour him shall be held guilty; evil shall come upon them, saith Jehovah.

Hør Herrens ord, Jakobs hus, og alle Israels slekter:

Hear ye the word of Jehovah, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

Så sier Herren: Hvilken urett fant deres fedre hos meg, siden de vendte seg bort fra meg, og fulgte intet og ble til intet?

thus saith Jehovah, What unrighteousness have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

De sa heller ikke: Hvor er Herren, som førte oss ut av landet Egypt, som ledet oss gjennom ørkenen, gjennom et land av ødemarker og avgrunner, gjennom et land av tørke og dødsskygge, gjennom et land ingen reiste gjennom eller bodde i?

Neither said they, Where is Jehovah that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that none passed through, and where no man dwelt?

Og jeg brakte dere til et fruktbart land, for å spise dens frukt og dens gode; men da dere kom dit, gjorde dere landet urent, og gjorde min arv til en styggedom.

And I brought you into a plentiful land, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.

Prestene spurte ikke: Hvor er Herren? Og de som håndterer loven kjente meg ikke; lederne falt også fra meg, og profetene profeterte ved Baal, og fulgte det som ikke gagner.

The priests said not, Where is Jehovah? and they that handle the law knew me not: the rulers also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

Derfor vil jeg fremdeles stride med dere, sier Herren, og med deres barns barn vil jeg stride.

Wherefore I will yet contend with you, saith Jehovah, and with your children's children will I contend.

Gå til Kittims kyst, og se; send til Kedar, og undersøk nøye; og se om noe slikt har skjedd.

For pass over to the isles of Kittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently; and see if there hath been such a thing.

Har et folk skiftet ut sine guder, enda de ikke er guder? Men mitt folk har byttet sin ære for det som ikke gagnar.

Hath a nation changed `its' gods, which yet are no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

Vær forferdet, dere himler, over dette, og skjelv; bli ute av deg selv, sier Herren.

Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith Jehovah.

For mitt folk har gjort to onde ting: de har forlatt meg, kilden til det levende vann, og hugget seg brønner, sprukne brønner, som ikke kan holde vann.

For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

Er Israel en tjener? Er han en hjemfødt slave? Hvorfor er han blitt bytte?

Is Israel a servant? is he a home-born `slave'? why is he become a prey?

De unge løvene brøler etter ham, og ropte; og de har gjort hans land øde: hans byer er brent ned uten innbyggere.

The young lions have roared upon him, and yelled; and they have made his land waste: his cities are burned up, without inhabitant.

Også Memfis og Tahpanhes barn har knust kronen av ditt hode.

The children also of Memphis and Tahpanhes have broken the crown of thy head.

Har du ikke brakt dette over deg selv, fordi du forlot Herren din Gud da han ledet deg på veien?

Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy God, when he led thee by the way?

Og nå, hva har du å gjøre i Egypt, for å drikke av Sihors vann? Eller hva har du å gjøre i Assyria, for å drikke av flodens vann?

And now what hast thou to do in the way to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Shihor? or what hast thou to do in the way to Assyria, to drink the waters of the River?

Din egen ondskap skal tukte deg, og dine frafall skal slå deg: Så vit og se at det er ondt og bittert at du har forlatt Herren din Gud, og at min frykt ikke er i deg, sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud.

Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

For fra gammelt av har jeg brutt ditt åk, og revet dine bånd; men du sa: Jeg vil ikke tjene; for på hver høy høyde og under hvert grønt tre bøyet du deg, som en utuktig kvinne.

For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bonds; and thou saidst, I will not serve; for upon every high hill and under every green tree thou didst bow thyself, playing the harlot.

Og likevel plantet jeg deg som en edel vinstokk, en helt rett sæd: hvordan har du blitt en vill og fremmed vinstokk for meg?

Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate branches of a foreign vine unto me?

For selv om du vasker deg med aske og bruker mye såpe, forblir din synd synlig foran meg, sier Herren Gud.

For though thou wash thee with lye, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord Jehovah.

Hvordan kan du si: Jeg er ikke uren, jeg har ikke gått etter Baalim? Se din vei i dalen, vit hva du har gjort: du er som en rask kamel som krysser sine stier.

How canst thou say, I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: `thou art' a swift dromedary traversing her ways;

Et vilt esel vant til ørkenen, som snapper etter vinden i sin lyst; hvem kan vende henne bort i hennes tid? Alle som søker henne vil ikke slite seg ut; i hennes måned vil de finne henne.

a wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind in her desire; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

Hold din fot fra å bli bar, og din hals fra tørst; men du sa: Det er forgjeves; nei, for jeg har elsket fremmede, og etter dem vil jeg gå.

Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, It is in vain; no, for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

Som en tyv skammer seg når han er funnet, slik er Israels hus skamfull; de, deres konger, deres fyrster, deres prester og deres profeter;

As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets;

som sier til en stokk: Du er min far; og til en stein: Du har født meg; for de har vendt ryggen til meg, og ikke ansiktet; men i deres nød vil de si: Stå opp og frels oss.

who say to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face; but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.

Men hvor er dine guder som du har laget? La dem reise seg, om de kan frelse deg i din nød: for etter dine byers antall er dine guder, Juda.

But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.

Hvorfor vil dere stride med meg? Dere har alle falt fra meg, sier Herren.

Wherefore will ye contend with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith Jehovah.

Til ingen nytte har jeg slått deres barn; de har ikke tatt imot tukt: deres eget sverd har fortært deres profeter som en ødeleggende løve.

In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

Å, slekt, se Herrens ord. Har jeg vært en ørken for Israel? Eller et land med tett mørke? Hvorfor sier mitt folk: Vi er fri; vi vil ikke komme til deg mer?

O generation, see ye the word of Jehovah. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? or a land of thick darkness? wherefore say my people, We are broken loose; we will come no more unto thee?

Kan en jomfru glemme sine smykker, eller en brud sin drakt? Likevel har mitt folk glemt meg i utallige dager.

Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

Hvordan pynter du din vei for å søke kjærlighet! Derfor har du også lært de onde kvinner dine veier.

How trimmest thou thy way to seek love! therefore even the wicked women hast thou taught thy ways.

Også i dine skjørter finnes blodet fra uskyldige fattige sjeler: ikke fordi du fant dem i innbrudd; men på grunn av alt dette.

Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the innocent poor: thou didst not find them breaking in; but it is because of all these things.

Men du sa: Jeg er uskyldig; sikkert har hans vrede vendt bort fra meg. Se, jeg vil gå i rette med deg, for du sier: Jeg har ikke syndet.

Yet thou saidst, I am innocent; surely his anger is turned away from me. Behold, I will enter into judgment with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

Hvorfor farer du så meget for å endre din vei? Du skal bli skamfull over Egypt også, som du var skamfull over Assyria.

Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou shalt be ashamed of Egypt also, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.

Derfra skal du også gå ut med hendene over hodet; for Herren har forkastet dem du stoler på, og du skal ikke ha lykke med dem.

From thence also shalt thou go forth, with thy hands upon thy head: for Jehovah hath rejected those in whom thou trustest, and thou shalt not prosper with them.
