Det var en mann i landet Us som het Job; han var hel og rettskaffen, en som fryktet Gud og vendte seg bort fra det onde.

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.

Han hadde sju sønner og tre døtre.

And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

Hans eiendom besto av sju tusen sauer, tre tusen kameler, fem hundre oksepar og fem hundre eselhopper, og svært mange tjenere; så denne mannen var den største av alle i øst.

His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

Hans sønner holdt fest i huset hos hverandre i tur og orden, og de sendte bud på de tre søstrene sine for å spise og drikke med dem.

And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

Når dagene med festing var over, sendte Job etter dem og renset dem; han stod tidlig opp om morgenen og ofret brennoffer for hver enkelt av dem. For Job sa: Kanskje mine sønner har syndet og forbannet Gud i sitt hjerte. Slik gjorde Job alltid.

And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

En dag kom Guds sønner for å tre frem for Herren, og blant dem kom også Satan.

Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.

Herren sa til Satan: Hvor kommer du fra? Satan svarte Herren og sa: Jeg har flakket omkring på jorden og vandret rundt på den.

And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

Da sa Herren til Satan: Har du sett min tjener Job? For det finnes ingen som ham på jorden, en fullkommen og oppriktig mann, som frykter Gud og vender seg bort fra det onde.

And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.

Satan svarte Herren og sa: Frykter Job Gud forgjeves?

Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

Har du ikke vernet ham og huset hans og alt han eier på alle kanter? Du har velsignet hans henders verk, og eiendommen hans har blitt økt i landet.

Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

Men rekker du ut hånden og rører ved alt han eier, vil han fornærme deg rett opp i ansiktet.

But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

Da sa Herren til Satan: Se, alt han eier, er i din makt; bare harmen hans skal du ikke legge hand på. Så gikk Satan bort fra Herrens nærhet.

And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.

En dag da hans sønner og døtre var og spiste og drakk vin i sin eldste brors hus,

And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,

kom det en budbringer til Job og sa: Oksene pløyde, og eselhoppene beitet ved siden av dem,

that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;

men sabeerne overfalt dem og tok dem, og tjenerne slo de med sverd; bare jeg slapp unna for å fortelle deg det.

and the Sabeans fell `upon them', and took them away: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Mens han ennå snakket, kom det en annen og sa: Guds ild falt fra himmelen og brente opp sauene og tjenerne og fortærte dem; bare jeg slapp unna for å fortelle deg det.

While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Mens han ennå snakket, kom det en annen og sa: Kaldeerne dannet tre grupper, overfalt kamelene og tok dem, og tjenerne slo de med sverd; bare jeg slapp unna for å fortelle deg det.

While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Mens han ennå snakket, kom det en annen og sa: Dine sønner og døtre spiste og drakk vin i sin eldste brors hus,

While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;

da kom det en stor vind fra ørkenen og traff huset på alle fire hjørner, og det falt over de unge menneskene, og de er døde; bare jeg slapp unna for å fortelle deg det.

and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Da reiste Job seg, rev kappen sin, skar av seg håret, kastet seg til jorden og tilba.

Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;

Han sa: Naken kom jeg ut av min mors liv, og naken skal jeg vende tilbake. Herren har gitt, og Herren har tatt; velsignet være Herrens navn.

and he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.

I alt dette syndet ikke Job, og gav heller ikke Gud skylden på en uforstandig måte.

In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
