I begynnelsen var Ordet, og Ordet var hos Gud, og Ordet var Gud.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Det samme var i begynnelsen hos Gud.

The same was in the beginning with God.

Alt ble til ved ham, og uten ham ble ingenting til av det som er blitt til.

All things were made through him; and without him was not anything made that hath been made.

I ham var liv, og livet var menneskenes lys.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Og lyset skinner i mørket, og mørket har ikke overvunnet det.

And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not.

Det kom en mann, sendt fra Gud, som het Johannes.

There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John.

Han kom for å vitne, for å vitne om lyset, så alle kunne tro ved ham.

The same came for witness, that he might bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him.

Han var ikke lyset, men kom for å vitne om lyset.

He was not the light, but `came' that he might bear witness of the light.

Det sanne lys, som gir lys til hvert menneske, kom til verden.

There was the true light, `even the light' which lighteth every man, coming into the world.

Han var i verden, og verden var blitt til ved ham, og verden kjente ham ikke.

He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world knew him not.

Han kom til sitt eget, og hans egne tok ikke imot ham.

He came unto his own, and they that were his own received him not.

Men så mange som tok imot ham, dem gav han rett til å bli Guds barn, dem som tror på hans navn,

But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, `even' to them that believe on his name:

de som ikke er født av blod, heller ikke av kjøds vilje, ei heller av manns vilje, men av Gud.

who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Og Ordet ble kjød og tok bolig iblant oss (og vi så hans herlighet, en herlighet som den enbårne har fra Faderen), full av nåde og sannhet.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth.

Johannes vitner om ham og roper og sier: Dette var han som jeg sa: Han som kommer etter meg, er kommet foran meg, for han var før meg.

John beareth witness of him, and crieth, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that cometh after me is become before me: for he was before me.

For av hans fylde har vi alle fått, og nåde over nåde.

For of his fulness we all received, and grace for grace.

For loven ble gitt ved Moses; nåden og sannheten kom ved Jesus Kristus.

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Ingen har noensinne sett Gud; den enbårne Sønn, som er i Faderens favn, han har forklart ham.

No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared `him'.

Dette er Johannes' vitnesbyrd da jødene sendte prester og levitter fra Jerusalem for å spørre ham: Hvem er du?

And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent unto him from Jerusalem priests and Levites to ask him, Who art thou?

Han bekjente og nektet ikke; han bekjente: Jeg er ikke Messias.

And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, I am not the Christ.

Og de spurte ham: Hva da? Er du Elia? Og han sier: Jeg er ikke. Er du profeten? Og han svarte: Nei.

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he saith, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.

Da sa de til ham: Hvem er du da, så vi kan gi dem svar som sendte oss? Hva sier du om deg selv?

They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

Han sa: Jeg er en røst av en som roper i ødemarken: Gjør Herrens vei rett, som profeten Jesaja har sagt.

He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.

Og de var sendt fra fariseerne.

And they had been sent from the Pharisees.

Og de spurte ham og sa til ham: Hvorfor døper du da, hvis du ikke er Messias, heller ikke Elia, heller ikke profeten?

And they asked him, and said unto him, Why then baptizest thou, if thou art not the Christ, neither Elijah, neither the prophet?

Johannes svarte dem og sa: Jeg døper med vann; midt iblant dere står en dere ikke kjenner,

John answered them, saying, I baptize in water: in the midst of you standeth one whom ye know not,

han som kommer etter meg, som jeg ikke er verdig til å løse sandalremmen til.

`even' he that cometh after me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to unloose.

Dette skjedde i Betania, bortenfor Jordan, hvor Johannes døpte.

These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Dagen etter ser han Jesus komme mot seg og sier: Se, Guds Lam, som tar bort verdens synd!

On the morrow he seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world!

Dette er han som jeg sa: Etter meg kommer en mann som er kommet foran meg, for han var før meg.

This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man who is become before me: for he was before me.

Og jeg kjente ham ikke; men for at han skulle bli åpenbart for Israel, derfor kom jeg og døpte med vann.

And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, for this cause came I baptizing in water.

Og Johannes vitnet og sa: Jeg så Ånden komme ned som en due fra himmelen, og den ble værende over ham.

And John bare witness, saying, I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven; and it abode upon him.

Og jeg kjente ham ikke, men han som sendte meg for å døpe med vann, han sa til meg: Den du ser Ånden komme ned over og bli hos, han er den som døper med Den Hellige Ånd.

And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and abiding upon him, the same is he that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit.

Og jeg har sett det, og jeg har vitnet at han er Guds Sønn.

And I have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

Dagen etter stod Johannes der igjen med to av sine disipler;

Again on the morrow John was standing, and two of his disciples;

og han så på Jesus mens han gikk, og sa: Se, Guds Lam!

and he looked upon Jesus as he walked, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God!

De to disiplene hørte ham si dette, og de fulgte Jesus.

And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

Jesus vendte seg om og så at de fulgte ham, og han sa til dem: Hva søker dere? De sa til ham: Rabbi (det betyr Mester), hvor bor du?

And Jesus turned, and beheld them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? And they said unto him, Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), where abideth thou?

Han sa til dem: Kom og se. De kom og så hvor han bodde, og de ble hos ham den dagen; det var omkring den tiende time.

He saith unto them, Come, and ye shall see. They came therefore and saw where he abode; and they abode with him that day: it was about the tenth hour.

En av de to som hadde hørt Johannes tale og hadde fulgt ham, var Andreas, Simon Peters bror.

One of the two that heard John `speak', and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

Han fant først sin egen bror Simon og sa til ham: Vi har funnet Messias (det betyr Kristus).

He findeth first his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah (which is, being interpreted, Christ).

Han førte ham til Jesus. Jesus så på ham og sa: Du er Simon, Johannes' sønn, du skal kalles Kefas (det betyr Peter).

He brought him unto Jesus. Jesus looked upon him, and said, Thou art Simon the son of John: thou shalt be called Cephas (which is by interpretation, Peter).

Dagen etter ville Jesus dra til Galilea, og han fant Filip; og Jesus sa til ham: Følg meg.

On the morrow he was minded to go forth into Galilee, and he findeth Philip: and Jesus saith unto him, Follow me.

Filip var fra Betsaida, Andreas' og Peters by.

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.

Filip fant Natanael og sa til ham: Vi har funnet ham som Moses skrev om i loven, og som profetene har skrevet om, Jesus fra Nasaret, Josefs sønn.

Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

Og Natanael sa til ham: Kan det komme noe godt fra Nasaret? Filip sa til ham: Kom og se.

And Nathanael said unto him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

Jesus så Natanael komme mot seg og sa om ham: Se, en sann israelitt, i hvem det ikke er svik!

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

Natanael sa til ham: Hvordan kjenner du meg? Jesus svarte og sa til ham: Før Filip kalte på deg, da du var under fikentreet, så jeg deg.

Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

Natanael svarte ham: Rabbi, du er Guds Sønn; du er Israels konge.

Nathanael answered him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art King of Israel.

Jesus svarte og sa til ham: Fordi jeg sa deg at jeg så deg under fikentreet, tror du? Du skal se større ting enn dette.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee underneath the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

Og han sa til ham: Sannelig, sannelig, jeg sier dere: Dere skal se himmelen åpen og Guds engler stige opp og ned over Menneskesønnen.

And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
