Men dette mislikte Jona sterkt, og han ble sint.

But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.

Og han ba til Herren og sa: «Å, Herre, var det ikke dette jeg sa mens jeg enda var i mitt land? Derfor skyndte jeg meg å flykte til Tarsis. For jeg visste at du er en nådig og barmhjertig Gud, sen til vrede og rik på kjærlighet, og du ombestemmer deg om det onde.»

And he prayed unto Jehovah, and said, I pray thee, O Jehovah, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I hasted to flee unto Tarshish; for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

Så nå, Herre, ta, jeg ber deg, mitt liv fra meg, for det er bedre for meg å dø enn å leve.»

Therefore now, O Jehovah, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

Og Herren sa: «Har du rett til å være sint?»

And Jehovah said, Doest thou well to be angry?

Så gikk Jona ut av byen og satte seg på østsiden av byen. Der bygde han en hytte for seg selv og satt under den i skyggen for å se hva som ville hende med byen.

Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what would become of the city.

Og Herren Gud lot en ricinusplante vokse opp over Jona, for å gi skygge over hodet hans og fri ham fra hans nød. Så Jona ble veldig glad for planten.

And Jehovah God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his evil case. So Jonah was exceeding glad because of the gourd.

Men Gud sendte en orm da morgenen kom neste dag, og den bet planten så den visnet.

But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd, that it withered.

Og da solen stod opp, sendte Gud en brennende østavind, og solen slo på Jonas hode slik at han besvimte. Han ønsket seg døden og sa: «Det er bedre for meg å dø enn å leve.»

And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

Og Gud sa til Jona: «Har du rett til å være sint for planten?» Og han sa: «Jeg har rett til å være sint, til og med til døden.»

And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

Og Herren sa: «Du har hatt omsorg for planten, som du ikke har arbeidet for, og ikke fått til å vokse; som kom opp i løpet av en natt og forsvant i løpet av en natt.

And Jehovah said, Thou hast had regard for the gourd, for which thou hast not labored, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

Og skulle ikke jeg ha omsorg for Ninive, den store byen, hvor det er mer enn et hundre og tjue tusen mennesker som ikke kan skille mellom sin høyre hånd og venstre, og mange dyr også?

and should not I have regard for Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
