Og Herren sa til Josva: Frykt ikke, og bli ikke forferdet: ta med deg alle krigerne, reis opp til Ai; se, jeg har gitt kongen av Ai i din hånd, folket hans og byen hans og landet hans.

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land;

Og du skal gjøre med Ai og kongen hennes som du gjorde med Jeriko og hennes konge: bare byttet og buskapen skal dere ta som krigsbytte til dere selv: legg et bakhold bak byen.

And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: set thee an ambush for the city behind it.

Så stod Josva opp, og alle krigerne, for å dra opp til Ai: og Josva valgte ut tretti tusen sterke krigere og sendte dem ut om natten.

So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them forth by night.

Og han befalte dem, idet han sa: Se, dere skal ligge i bakhold mot byen, bak byen; gå ikke veldig langt fra byen, men vær alle klare:

And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city; go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

og jeg, og alt folket som er med meg, vil nærme oss byen. Og det skal skje, når de kommer ut mot oss, som første gang, at vi vil flykte for dem;

and I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city. And it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them;

og de vil komme ut etter oss, til vi har trukket dem vekk fra byen; for de vil si, De flykter for oss, som første gang: så vi vil flykte for dem;

and they will come out after us, till we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: so we will flee before them;

og dere skal reise dere fra bakholdet, og ta byen: for Herren deres Gud vil gi den i deres hånd.

and ye shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city: for Jehovah your God will deliver it into your hand.

Og det skal være slik, når dere har tatt byen, at dere skal sette byen i brann; i samsvar med Herrens ord skal dere gjøre: se, jeg har befalt dere.

And it shall be, when ye have seized upon the city, that ye shall set the city on fire; according to the word of Jehovah shall ye do: see, I have commanded you.

Og Josva sendte dem av sted; og de gikk til bakholdet, og ventet mellom Betel og Ai, på vestsiden av Ai: men Josva overnattet den natten blant folket.

And Joshua sent them forth; and they went to the ambushment, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

Og Josva reiste seg tidlig om morgenen, og samlet folket, og dro opp, han og Israels eldste, foran folket til Ai.

And Joshua arose up early in the morning, and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

Og hele folket, også krigerne som var med ham, dro opp, og nærmet seg, og kom foran byen, og slo leir på nordsiden av Ai: og det var en dal mellom dem og Ai.

And all the people, `even' the `men of' war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and encamped on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between him and Ai.

Og han tok omkring fem tusen menn, og satte dem i bakhold mellom Betel og Ai, på vestsiden av byen.

And he took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of the city.

Så satte de folket, hele hæren som var nord for byen, og de som lå i bakhold, vest for byen; og Josva gikk den natten inn i midten av dalen.

So they set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers-in-wait that were on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

Og det skjedde, da kongen av Ai så det, at de skyndte seg og stod opp tidlig, og byens menn gikk ut mot Israel til kamp, han og hele hans folk, på fastsatt tid, foran Araba; men han visste ikke at det var et bakhold mot ham bak byen.

And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he knew not that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

Og Josva og hele Israel lot som de ble slått foran dem, og flyktet mot ørkenen.

And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

Og alle folket som var i byen ble kalt sammen for å forfølge dem: og de forfulgte Josva, og ble trukket bort fra byen.

And all the people that were in the city were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

Og det var ikke igjen en mann i Ai eller Betel som ikke gikk ut etter Israel: og de lot byen stå åpen, og forfulgte Israel.

And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

Og Herren sa til Josva: Rekk ut sverdet som er i din hånd mot Ai; for jeg vil gi den i din hånd. Og Josva rakte ut sverdet som var i hans hånd mot byen.

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Stretch out the javelin that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thy hand. And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

Og bakholdet reiste seg raskt fra sitt sted, og de løp straks han rakte ut hånden, og gikk inn i byen, og tok den; og de skyndte seg og satte byen i brann.

And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and set the city on fire.

Og da mennene i Ai så seg tilbake, så de, og se, røyken fra byen steg opp til himmelen, og de hadde ingen kraft til å flykte verken hit eller dit: og folket som flyktet til ørkenen vendte seg tilbake mot forfølgerne.

And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

Og da Josva og hele Israel så at bakholdet hadde tatt byen, og at røyken fra byen steg opp, vendte de om igjen, og slo mennene fra Ai.

And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

Og de andre kom ut fra byen mot dem; så de var midt blant Israel, noen på denne siden, og noen på den andre siden: og de slo dem, så de ikke lot noen av dem bli igjen eller flykte.

And the others came forth out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

Og kongen av Ai tok de levende, og førte ham til Josva.

And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

Og det skjedde, da Israel hadde avsluttet med å drepe alle innbyggerne i Ai på marken, i ørkenen hvor de forfulgte dem, og de alle var falt for sverdets egg, til de alle var utslettet, at hele Israel vendte tilbake til Ai, og slo det med sverdets egg.

And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they pursued them, and they were all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Israel returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

Og alle som falt den dagen, både menn og kvinner, var tolv tusen, alle mennene fra Ai.

And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

For Josva trakk ikke tilbake hånden, som han hadde rakt ut sverdet med, før han fullstendig ødela alle innbyggerne i Ai.

For Joshua drew not back his hand, wherewith he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

Bare buskapen og byttet fra den byen tok Israel som krigsbytte til seg selv, i samsvar med Herrens ord som han bød Josva.

Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for prey unto themselves, according unto the word of Jehovah which he commanded Joshua.

Så brente Josva Ai, og gjorde det om til en ruinhaug for alltid, en ødeleggelse, til denne dag.

So Joshua burnt Ai, and made it a heap for ever, even a desolation, unto this day.

Og kongen av Ai hang han på et tre til kvelds; og ved solnedgang befalte Josva, og de tok hans lik ned fra treet, og kastet det ved inngangen til byporten, og reiste der en stor steinhaug, til denne dag.

And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until the eventide: and at the going down of the sun Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, and cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised thereon a great heap of stones, unto this day.

Da bygde Josva et alter til Herren, Israels Gud, på fjellet Ebal,

Then Joshua built an altar unto Jehovah, the God of Israel, in mount Ebal,

som Moses, Herrens tjener, hadde befalt Israels barn, som det er skrevet i Mose lovbok, et alter av ubehandlede steiner, som ingen jern har vært løftet opp på: og de ofret derpå brennoffer til Herren, og ofringer for fred.

as Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of unhewn stones, upon which no man had lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt-offerings unto Jehovah, and sacrificed peace-offerings.

Og han skrev der på steinene en kopi av Mose lov, som han skrev, i nærvær av Israels barn.

And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote, in the presence of the children of Israel.

Og hele Israel, og deres eldste og offiserer, og deres dommere, stod på denne siden av arken og på den andre siden foran prestene, levittene, som bar Herrens paktsark, både de fremmede og de innfødte; halvparten av dem foran fjellet Gerisim, og halvparten av dem foran fjellet Ebal; som Moses, Herrens tjener, hadde befalt i begynnelsen, at de skulle velsigne Israels folk.

And all Israel, and their elders and officers, and their judges, stood on this side of the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, as well the sojourner as the homeborn; half of them in front of mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of Jehovah had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.

Og deretter leste han alle ordene i loven, velsignelsen og forbannelsen, i samsvar med alt som er skrevet i lovboken.

And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

Det var ikke et ord av alt det Moses hadde befalt, som Josva ikke leste opp for hele Israels menighet, og kvinnene, og barna, og de fremmede som var blant dem.

There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the little ones, and the sojourners that were among them.
